Mercerising

by @ Blessed Earth: Latest News

According to Wikipedia…

Mercerization is a treatment for cotton fabric and thread that gives fabric or yarns a lustrous appearance
and strengthens them. The process is applied to cellulosic materials like cotton or hemp.
Mercerisation alters the chemical structure of the cotton fibre. The structure of the fibre inter-converts
from alpha-cellulose to a thermodynamically more favourable beta-cellulose polymorph.
Mercerising results in the swelling of the cell wall of the cotton fibre. This causes increase in the surface
area and reflectance, and gives the fibre a softer feel.

The modern production method for mercerised cotton, also known as "pearl" or "pearle" cotton, gives
cotton thread (or cotton-covered thread with a polyester core) a sodium hydroxide bath that is then
neutralized with an acid bath. This treatment increases lustre, strength, affinity to dye, resistance
to mildew, but, on the other hand, increases its affinity to lint.

Mercerisation has no place in organics and is an artificial means of achieving desirable outcomes for
cotton fabrics. The practice is fundamentally unhealthy in holistic terms.

Mercerisation significantly reduces the possibility of fraying, abrasion or pilling. Like Formaldehyde, it
works highly effectively. However it can no longer be deemed a natural product and could never be part
of an organic certification process.

In organics we are constantly up against this kind of practice and can only appeal to the native
intelligence of the consumer.

What’s Up With Thread Count?

by Victoria @ Naturepedic Blog

Anyone who has shopped for sheets has noticed different thread counts. And as Naturepedic customers may have noticed, we recently gave our organic cotton sheets an upgrade and switched from 300 thread count to approximately 400 thread count. But what exactly is thread count and why does it matter? What Is Thread Count? When looking at the thread count of sheets, you’re not just looking at a random number. However, it is a common misconception that a higher thread count directly translates to better quality sheets. Thread count is actually the number of threads per square inch (this includes horizontally and vertically). The finer the materials sheets are made of, the higher the thread count. You can typically assume that the higher the thread count, the softer the sheets. Therefore, thread count has an effect on the feel of your sheets, but it is not the only factor that will affect the overall quality of your sheets. What Else Should[...]

A TWO-FOR DEAL!

by @ Heart of Vermont : Latest News

We had a customer call in and ask why buying two 3" futons cost soooo much more than buying one 6" futon, and, given how much more it cost to buy two, why anyone would go that route?! The reason why we sell the 3" & 4" futons is because futons need to be flipped and turned to prevent body imprints from forming. While the futons are pretty simple to flip - simply roll it onto itself and pull the bottom out - it can be challenging (HEAVY) for some; especially if the person flipping it has any health issues. The 3 & 4" futons are easier to manipulate, which also makes them great for travel, guest rooms, or any area in which you'd need to move them more frequently. They can also give you more options for flipping and turning, ie: you can have them both head to foot one flip and them switch one of the foot to head the next then the other one the next time giving you more varieties for sleeping surfaces to prevent body indentation divots. (Don't forget to flip them SIDE TO SIDE as well!)

Anyway....The reason WHY it costs more to buy two thinner futons verses one thicker one is that it takes more materials (we need to make two complete casings, use twice as many ties and wool in the wool/cotton versions of the futons, and two zippers and... twice as much time to produce).  That being said, after discussing this with our customer, we decided that for some people buying the thicker futons just isn't an option, so we would like to offer not just her, but ALL our customers, A DEAL!  Simply put in the coupon code "Two For" and get $250 off a set of 3 or 4 inch thick futons!  And don't worry, even if you forget to add the code, we are small enough that we will catch it and apply the discount.

Fairtrade Vs Organic Certification

by @ Blessed Earth: Latest News

Fair Trade.
The idea of fair trade has a lot of appeal with the public, who understandably hate exploitation.
We at Blessed Earth were fully fledged members of the fair trade movement for over a year.
We got out because:

  • The costs are so high. When our manufacturing arm, Go Green textiles, tried to join recently the initial costs alone were in the order of $5000. This is money we would have to recover, ultimately, from you our customers.
  • The quarterly fees paid were many times the small premium paid to the farmers. We know this because we continued to pay the premiums to the farmers in Egypt, even after we left fair trade. Most of the money we paid went to the admin of fair trade.
  • In the case of the cotton industry, our organic growers are paid premium prices for their crop, far greater than the premium paid by fair trade.
  • Fair trade do not care if a crop is conventionally grown from GMO seed with chemicals, even though those chemicals are killing workers in the industry at all levels. It actually supports multinational corporations by condoning the use of their products.
  • Organic certification is chemical free. It looks after the cotton growers and workers – and the environment – and ensures a greater return for growers.

It may be that fair trade has a role to play protecting the rights of those making indigenous jewellery or other products.

We at Blessed Earth feel it has no meaningful role to play in the cotton industry.

Does Non-Organic Cotton Contain Pesticide Residues? | Naturepedic Blog

Naturepedic Blog

Many parents have questions about cotton. Is regular cotton okay, or should you use organic? The major difference is pesticides – organic cotton is grown without pesticides; regular cotton is grown with them. Are residues from those pesticides still in the cotton clothing, sheets and blankets you’re using for your baby? This is an important question if you’re concerned about your child’s health. Pesticides have been linked to several diseases and conditions, including asthma, autism, learning disabilities, birth defects, reproductive dysfunction, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and several types of cancer. In fact, the President’s Cancer Panel recommends that we eat organic food in order to avoid pesticide poisoning. Here’s a quote from the latest President’s Cancer Panel Report. “Exposure to pesticides can be decreased by choosing, to the extent possible, food grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers…Similarly, exposure to antibiotics, growth hormones, and toxic run-off from livestock feed lots can be minimized by eating free-range meat raised without these[...]

Our Very First Blog Post!

by @ Heart of Vermont : Latest News

Welcome to Our blog!
As a very small family business the intricate details involved in the world of online sales has been eluding us. We've finally decided that we need to get ourselves out there and let customers who know we are! We have started by launching this new website and are attempting to bring our 20+ year old business up-to-date!

Thanks to some studies shown to us by our new web-host (Bigcommerce) we have learned that blogging is actually an important tool in the small business owner's tool-belt...who knew? So, we have decided to give it a shot. As we are extremely new at this we decided that out first blog should just be a welcome to our new site! Unfortunately, there have been some wrinkles with our launch, but we're hopeful that - unlike organic cotton- that once we've ironed out these wrinkles that they will stay ironed and we'll have nothing but smooth sailing ahead!

Wrinkles:

1.) One of the most glaring wrinkles since the launch has been problem with payments! Our site is currently only accepting three forms of payment; PayPal, Check & Money Orders. While we're glad that PayPal is so popular, we do want to let our customers know that we do accept all major credit cards; Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express....although until we can figure out why they aren't offered on the site they will have to be for telephone orders - (800.639.4123) -OR- Another option is to place your order using either "check" or "money order" as your payment option, and then once we've sent you your initial invoice you can let us know of any alternate payment methods you would prefer to use for that order.

2.) Where have all the products gone? We had a long-time customer call to tell us that while he loved the color scheme our site seemed to be missing some very important information....namely the PRODUCTS! On the plus side the products are there....they're just playing hide-and-seek. A quick "search" usually pops up the products you are looking for without any additional fuss, but if you'd like to play the game we've found quite a few of them hiding under "Home Organics"!      HAPPY HUNTING :)

3.) They say a picture is worth a thousand words...well if that's true our new site is missing a few thousand! For some reason when we uploaded our products not all the pictures went with them. And some of the pictures managed to attach themselves to the wrong products! We are quickly trying to fix these, but for those customers who have had this switcheroo happen to one of the products they ordered we sent correct pictures with their invoice and ensured that they had ordered the correct item before we finished processing their order!

4.) "LONGWINTER" ~ the coupon code to save 15% off our organic washable blankets - seems to have decided not to work. We will apply the coupon on our end for all those loyal customers ordering these lovely, snuggly blankets at full price when the coupon failed. Luckily this is one wrinkle that has already been ironed out, so if you tried to use it and it didn't work then you can successfully try again! But don't wait too much longer as April is just around the corner!

Plan of Attack

Over the next few days our first priority will be to round up those mischievous products and place them firmly in the categories where they belong, so that our wonderful customers can find them quickly and easily. We will also be untangling the puzzling picture problem and begin showcasing our beautiful products correctly for your viewing pleasure :) We are already waiting to hear back from our payment processor about why the credit cards aren't being accepted, but we're sure that the lovely people at CPN.USA will get it all straightened out for us. That takes care of all our known wrinkles...but, we don't want to be blindsided down the road. We know that our products are important to so many of our customers health and comfort and we want the purchasing of them to be as comforting as the use of them. Because, we know your time is important - and there never seems to be enough of it - we are offering a 10% discount to people who take the time out of their busy lives to help us improve our site. Simply let us know about any additional wrinkles in our site that aren't listed above and we will give you a 10% discount on your next purchase*!

Thanks for taking the time to read our first blog! Have a wonderful weekend and shop Heart of Vermont Organic Products!

Blessings,
The Heart of Vermont Family

Dr Mercola on Wool Mattresses

by @ Blessed Earth: Latest News

SLEEPING NATURALLY

Blessed Earth are great fans of the work done By Dr Mercola.

His institute has likewise applauded the work we are doing and given permission to use his material.

Below we have assembled a very brief précis on the subject of wool bedding.

We hope you find it helpful and invite you to surf his opinion on countless subjects

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/08/15/why-you-should-never-ever-sleep-where-your-cat-sleeps.aspx

Why a Metal Mattress or Bed May be Particularly Dangerous

The vast majority of beds (90-95 percent) contain metal springs and/or frames. Unfortunately, these metal frames and metal box springs can amplify and distort the earth’s natural magnetic field, which can lead to a non-restful sleep along with a range of other symptoms including:   Headaches  Hyperactivity  Nightmares  Depression and fatigue  Eyestrain  Muscle cramps

Avoiding EMF Exposure is Very Important for Pregnant Women and Babies

If you have a baby, it is especially important for you to use a non-metallic bed for your baby, as their immature bodies are even more susceptible to EMF damage. A safer alternative is a wooden basinet or wooden crib, as opposed to metal varieties.

Further, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, PhD performed a small study showing that autism can actually be predicted based on the EMF levels of your sleeping quarters while pregnant!

He found that if you sleep in strong electromagnetic fields during pregnancy, your child will likely begin to exhibit neurological abnormalities within the first two years of life, such as: Neurological dysfunction   Hyperactivity   Learning disorders

Could This Simply Be the Best Bedding?

As was the case when I first introduced you to my wool bedding a few years ago, I still advise wool as your best possible choice for a mattress.

I believe it can enhance your overall sleep experience, as outlined below.

Feature

Benefit

Resists mold and mildew

Breathability of wool helps wick away moisture and keeps it dry.

Promotes thermo-regulation

Wool fibers keep a pocket of air close to your body while you sleep. This helps regulate your body temperature by insulating you when it's cold and breathing when it's warm.

Helps resist and reduce dust mites

Prevents dust mites from thriving in your bed.

Is inherently hypoallergenic

Perfect if you have sensitive skin.

Promotes breathability

Wool's ability to breathe is a key advantage over other bedding choices for sleep and body temperature comfort.

Provides superior resilience

Should hold its crimp and loft longer than most other fillings for added comfort.

Uses a sustainable resource

Unlike down, wool comes from sheep which aren't sacrificed for the sake of your bedding comfort.

Avoids the use of synthetic materials

100% handpicked wool bedding is not treated with harsh chemicals.

Resists fire without added chemicals

Wool is a natural flame-retardant and doesn't require synthetic chemicals to pass the US CPSC mattress standard.

But I don't recommend rushing out to purchase any wool bedding without closely scrutinizing the details.

There's More to Wool Bedding Than Meets the Eye

What's the big deal about being so selective about purchasing wool bedding? Just like any bedding, there are good wool options to choose from and not-so-good ones. Here's a quick checklist my research team used when narrowing down the specific wool mattress to be offered on the site. Make sure the wool…

  • Is 100% handpicked virgin wool – Why settle for anything but the best when it comes to wool bedding? Blessed Earth wool is the very finest on the market
  • Has NOT been treated with any risky synthetics or chemicals – Believe it or not, some wool bedding has been treated with questionable chemicals. We use no chemicals
  • Utilizes a completely natural cleansing process without carbonization – Carbonization uses sulfuric acid in the wool cleansing process, which can potentially cause issues if you have skin sensitivities.
  • Retains its natural lanolin oil – Certain cleansing processes, like carbonization, can reduce this oil which gives wool its soft and supple feel. Our wool has not been carbonised
  • Uses "hand tufting" instead of a machine process – Tufting is a way of anchoring the wool together in the mattress. Hand-tufting can make the wool fluffier and create a more comfortable mattress. Our mattresses are hand-made. Each tuft is individually tensioned using 100% cotton cord.

Plus, since I believe it's important for longevity purposes to flip your mattress every 6 months (twice a year) or so, I recommend you avoid any wool mattress that comes with pillow tops. Pillow top mattresses include an extra layer of pillow-like padding sewn onto the top of the mattress making it impractical to flip this mattress. However, the mattress is firm, so if you would like some additional padding, I recommend our American Wool Mattress Pad.

I encourage you to use this checklist and the tips to track down the perfect wool mattress and bedding that suits you.
