Why do Mattresses Have Toxic Chemicals in Them?

by exampleuser @ SleepLily

Why do mattresses have toxic chemicals in them? It’s a fair question. On a lot of levels it seems improbable – impossible even – that something as important as a mattress could be the source of toxic chemicals in our bedrooms. The mattress is, after all, the place we spend over a third of our... Read more »

HOW TO: Make a mouth-watering cauliflower 'steak' and guacamole sandwich

by a.analisa@gmail.com (Ana Lisa) @ Inhabitots

If you are looking for something filling, juicy and a bit greasy to fill your sandwiches, look no further than cauliflower 'steaks.' But don't worry, this delicious plant-based version of the traditional meat steaks doesn't look or taste at all like animal meat. First we grilled the 'steaks' -- or slabs if you prefer -- with a sauce until golden brown and crisp and while they cooked, made a Mexican-style creamy guacamole to go with it. When the cauliflower and hot green dip were both ready, we opened...

What’s Up With Thread Count?

by Victoria @ Naturepedic Blog

Anyone who has shopped for sheets has noticed different thread counts. And as Naturepedic customers may have noticed, we recently gave our organic cotton sheets an upgrade and switched from 300 thread count to approximately 400 thread count. But what exactly is thread count and why does it matter? What Is Thread Count? When looking at the thread count of sheets, you’re not just looking at a random number. However, it is a common misconception that a higher thread count directly translates to better quality sheets. Thread count is actually the number of threads per square inch (this includes horizontally and vertically). The finer the materials sheets are made of, the higher the thread count. You can typically assume that the higher the thread count, the softer the sheets. Therefore, thread count has an effect on the feel of your sheets, but it is not the only factor that will affect the overall quality of your sheets. What Else Should[...]

Mattress Disposal and Recycling

by Lindsay S @ Choose Mattress

With all the millions of mattresses being sold annually worldwide it’s wonder where all of these used mattresses cease to be worthy at the end of their life cycle. I used to have an image of huge refuse sites with stacks of rubbish and piles of mattresses. In the US, this is no longer the case as it was some decades ago. However, in many places across the world, a landfill site is certainly where old mattresses still do tend to expire, piled high in corners of tips where they take up space and cause unnecessary harm to the environment.

Why Good Sleep Matters So Much

by Lindsay S @ Choose Mattress

We humans spend about one-third of our lives asleep. This one-third greatly impacts the quality of the other two-thirds of our lives. Many things contribute to a good night’s rest, and your mattress lies at the foundation. According to WebMD, when it comes to sleep quality, “to get it right, you’ve got to start with the basics and your mattress is the first building block to a restful slumber.” After all, if you’re tossing and turning all night, struggling to get your body into a pain-free position, your sleep quality will be poor, and your wellness will suffer. Tempur-Pedic Alternatives In 2018

by Lindsay S @ Choose Mattress

While you may or may not love your bed, ask yourself – how comfortable are you while sleeping on it? Replacing your decade old mattress can help you sleep comfortably, but choosing the best mattress isn’t always as simple as one may think. For example, brands and types are abundant, and budgets range from cheap to very expensive, so scrimping could be detrimental to health, whilst overpaying could be pointless. If you’ve chosen the wrong mattress for yourself in terms of comfort, you’d most likely end up having a tough time sleeping and eventually suffer from sleep deprivation. Comfort aside,

Approaches to Guiding Your Baby to Good Sleep

by Guest Blogger @ Naturepedic Blog

No one appreciates sleep more than a parent of a newborn or young infant. This is because sleep is a completely different experience in the first four months of life, from the way sleep is experienced the rest of one’s life. For all children 4 months of age and older, and all healthy adults, sleep is a well-regulated and incredibly necessary activity, that really does offer balm to the mind, and helps the mind think. The pattern of sleep from ages 4 months and onward is defined by a very regular pattern of light sleep becoming deep sleep, then deep sleep becoming lighter sleep, moving into a phase of REM sleep (when most dreams occur), and then emerging from REM sleep at which point everyone gets to choose – wake up or do another cycle. The sleep cycle in a person 4 months of age and older goes as follows: – Stage I: a brief period that happens just as you fall[...]

Getting an organic crib mattress is easy – just call up Naturepedic and it will be at your doorstep before you can say “where’s my stuff?” But getting a non-toxic crib is another matter. What is a parent to do? A recent discussion on Debra Lynn Dadd’s (aka the Queen of Green) Green Living Q & A blog highlights the problems involved in finding a truly non-toxic crib. One reader even said they bought a crib that was allegedly non-toxic only to find out later that the glue used to hold it together contained three times the amount of formaldehyde recommended as safe. Boy, you just can’t leave any stone unturned! What are the parameters to keep in mind? – The crib should be made of solid wood – not particle board, a laminate or veneer. And not PVC or some other form of plastic. – The glue used to hold the crib together should be non-toxic. – Ideally, the[...]
