Finding Inexpensive Non-Toxic Bedding - MetaEfficient

MetaEfficient

Update 2016: See my updated article on non-toxic bedding. We spend about one third of our lives in bed. It’s a time when our body regenerates itself. We release about 3 liters of water while we sleep, and our bodies go through cycles of cooling down and heating up. We also absorb substances through our skin and through our lungs. ...

How to Find a Nontoxic and Sustainable Mattress - Ecocult

How to Find a Nontoxic and Sustainable Mattress - Ecocult

Ecocult

I have something admit. My mattress is not eco-friendly. Well, it is in the sense that I bought it used. Three years ago, I was sleeping on the Ikea mattress I had bought off the girl who lived in my room before me. When a downstairs neighbor had to abruptly move out and sell all his furniture, I picked up a Tempur-Pedic mattress for $300 (! They usually start at $1,600). That mattress is now covered with organic sheets, pillows, and pillow covers. But I never seriously considered getting a new one, even though I know most mattresses contain fire retardants, volatile organic compounds, and formaldehyde which offgas into our air while we sleep on them. Hours a night. Almost every night. For years. In fact, my mattress must be the most toxic thing in my home. And yet, mattresses are expensive. And getting rid of my current mattress would entail throwing it out – because of bed bugs, nobody wants to buy or even take an old mattress. But now that you can recycle your mattress in New York City, I might be ready to switch mine out. But buyer beware: Not all mattress companies who bill themselves as eco-friendly …

Easy New Year Resolutions

by @ Green Home Library

You probably know that most New Year’s resolutions never make it to spring. However, if it is an easy fix that you can incorporate into your busy life, it usually lasts longer. When it comes to the planet, there is no better way to practice some simple adjustments for a green impact no matter how insignificant you may think it might seem.

These easy Eco-friendly New Year’s resolutions give some practical options to simply do your part without a lot of fuss. You can keep it at this level or use it to propel you deeper onto a green path that continues to support a clean environment for you as well as future generations.

Bottled Water Reversal

There is no reason to purchase, let alone produce, plastic bottled water anymore. By now most people are educated on the ravages this product is having on our oceans, land and even air quality. Not to mention the approximately twenty-million barrels of oil per year used to make these bottles. Yet, the greed machine continues produce bottled water taking advantage of an assumed uneducated public.

It is time to stand up to poor manufacturing; poisoning your planet and your body. Stopping your  consumption of bottled water and switching to a recycled steel, plastic, aluminum, glass or wood water bottle is a simple step you can take. Simply fill with clean water from an at-home filtration system or tap (many cities and states are proud of a clean, safe municipal water record) and take it wherever you go.

If carrying around a personal water bottle is out of the question, at least use them at home rather than fill your fridge with evil plastic waste. When on the road, look for more friendly packaging such as boxed water options or compostable bottles.

Paperless Towels

Another perverse depletion of natural resources is lumber used for the manufacturing of paper towels. Over fifteen billion pounds of these one-wipe wastes are found in landfills daily. Instead, using cotton cloths in place of paper towels saves trees and gets the job done at the same time.

Some argue that the water used to launder cotton cloths is a greater Eco-threat than felled trees which are replanted. However, the technological Eco-friendly upgrades to appliances such as washers and driers save more water and electricity than ever before. Add in non-toxic cleaning supplies and your cotton cloth replacements easily remedy the environmental atrocities of paper towel production.

Fix Phantom Power and Old Bulbs

Make this year your Eco-experiment by eliminating phantom power. Phantom power is the constant electrical drain on your home appliances even when they are shut off. The National Resource Defense Council put out this list in 2015 to give the homeowner an idea of the accumulated financial waste due to phantom power:

Annual cost of “phantom power”

  • Water recirculation pump - $93
  • Desktop computer - $49
  • TV - $38
  • Cable set-top box - $30
  • Audio receiver/stereo - $22
  • Printer - $11
  • Furnace - $8
  • Coffee maker - $6
  • Dryer - $4
  • GFCI outlets - $1 each

You can easily save money and energy by implementing simple home improvement fixes such as:

  • Installing smart power strips
  • Unplugging appliances until needed
  • Installing a digital power timer
  • Adjusting appliance settings such as shutting off power hogging “quick start” options

In addition, swapping out incandescent lightbulbs and replacing with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and/or light emitting diodes (LEDs) can also save money as well as reduce significant energy waste. The US Department of Energy estimates that, “green lightbulbs” can save upwards of 65%-80% energy usage as compared to incandescent bulbs.

Try these Eco-friendly New Year’s resolutions to start of your year with an Eco-bang. They are simple ways to save money and the planet all at once without you exerting yourself all that much. Then, when you realize how much extra energy you have you can join an activist association and travel the world fighting the good fight, or just go to work and be happy you're doing your part.

Shopping Guide: Non-Toxic Bedding for Babies & Kids

by Cindy Young @ One Part Sunshine

When I was pregnant and shopping for baby gear, I gave the most attention to where my babies would sleep. After all, babies spend more time asleep than awake. Safety was my primary consideration - not just whether they would be physically safe and not roll out of bed or get their head stuck between the crib bars, but also whether they would safe from harmful toxins. Children develop at a rapid pace and their bodies are not always efficient at resisting or excreting contaminants. In other words, all of those toxins in the environment have a big impact on your growing child. So, I chose bedding and mattresses constructed from organic, all-natural materials.

This Winter Commit to Your Optimal Health

by @ Green Home Library

With a nationwide freeze in play, now is a great time to start an activity program that will tighten and tone so when the snow starts to melt, you are ready to hit-the-ground-running. From yoga, to sports, or cycling there are a variety of activities you can utilize to propel your mind and body toward a more optimal health status. Find your inner passion activity that inspires you to get moving, and commit to your optimal health.

A Stressless Slide

Whether it's a New Year’s resolution or an, “I’m gonna do it this time” attitude, you just may be putting too much stress on yourself. This is why high numbers of good intentions quickly fall short particularly when it comes to diet and exercise. This winter, take the time to commit to something you really want to do for all the right reasons. If you are joining a gym just to lose weight you could be putting more pressure up front than you should. Instead, approach an activity commitment with as much passion as you can add to it. For instance, if you love playing softball then join or form a team and spend your time at the gym revolving around softball training. Maybe you need more peace and solitude in your life so why not choose a yoga class to get you there. Try and keep trying until the class or activity is a fit for you. There is no need to follow the pack just because it's easy, instead, think outside the box and find an activity that makes you look forward to it, not dread it in your gut simply to shave off a few pounds.

Keeping it Green

As you embark on finding your inner passion activity, take some time to consider the tools you will choose to get you there and keep you going. Whatever activity you choose, there’s an Eco-friendly accessory that can accompany it. No need to succumb to wasteful trends that use petroleum based rubbers and plastics. No need to purchase sneakers, workout clothes, and other essential gear manufactured in conditions that don't support fair wages and rights. Now, you can choose products that will support your inner goals while reinforcing a healthy planet at the same time. For instance, carry your own water bottle made from recycled steel; it that will stand up to the rigors of everyday wear and tear while being sustainable and supporting your health.

Science Daily reports on a study by Concordia University in Montreal which found that companies manufacturing green gear are sought after by consumers like you. Published in the Journal of Retailing, co-author of the study Maryam Tofighi commented, “Our findings indicate that consumers expect products with ethical attributes -- be they environmentally friendly, sustainably sourced or fair trade -- to come with a higher price tag. Companies would be wise to take advantage of those expectations,”

Don’t let the winter blues pull you down but rather look at this season as an opportunity to re-shift and reboot. From the balance of yoga, to the excitement of a team sport, this spring could be the new start you are looking for. Take your time to find the right activity you are passionate about, choose your green gear, and then enter your new path, fully loaded with a steadfast commitment to the most important commodity...you.

3 Small Business Green Savings

by @ Green Home Library

If you're a small business owner you know what it takes to keep afloat. You don’t have the luxury of Big Corp money pouring in to fund frivolous decisions, your business needs every penny in the right place, at the right time, all the time. This is why going green can sometimes be a challenge for small businesses. It requires switching a variety of choices that have been set in place to keep your company running at an even pace.

Changing a workable format is a risky venture but when it comes to going green, the numbers speak for themselves. These small business green savings show how you can integrate green products and green practices that just may, eventually, increase your bottom line.

B2B Reach Out

Business to business communication can be essential as a green money saving tip for small businesses. By reaching out to adjoining companies there is the possibility of working together for a variety of incentives.

European marketing company Imfuna reports that,

“By making environmental friendliness a priority of your business partnerships, you not only encourage other companies to reduce their carbon footprint, but also to reduce their own expenditures; and when companies with which you partner save money, those cost savings are passed along to you.”

Talk to your counterparts about:

  • Combine supplies - Combining green purchases, like industrial cleaning supplies in bulk, can make starting off together financially more feasible.
  • Patriotism - Joining with your suppliers, vendors and B2B neighbors to purchase and show USA made support can be a huge win, particularly when it comes to solar installations and wind power.
  • Beautification - When businesses band together in the name of the environment they must walk the walk, and it will show. Whether outdoor shopping or indoor building office space, the surroundings of your small business should have basic upkeep that you probably pay for, however, there are additional options.

You can work with other small businesses to install green extras such as:

  • Composting bins - Can be sold to local farms for profit.
  • LED public lighting - Saves everyone money on electric bills.
  • Solar powered garbage compactors - Saves on excess garbage costs and fossils fuel use.

Scale Down

Obtaining larger space may be a misstep when it comes to keeping your small business green. Lowering your carbon footprint means less consumption, yet startups and small thriving ventures  are often pressured to expand for more money and stature.

It may seem anti-business but keeping your company at a manageable level that embraces green practices, such as energy efficient lighting, wind or solar power, recycling and more, is a green money saving move. With less overhead you use less energy, create less waste and, if managed well, can increase profits on a low carbon footprint.

Happy Employees

Whether working at a zoo, an office, or any small business, employees that see how you run your company are apt to follow your lead. Moreover, if that lead is a positive message, like Eco-friendly practices, money saving benefits could very well follow.

CNBC reported that,

“A study by UCLA and the University of Paris -Dauphine found that employees at Eco-friendly companies are 16 percent more productive than average.

Professor Magali Delmas, an environmental economist at UCLA's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and the UCLA Anderson School of Management commented on the study,

“Adopting green practices isn't just good for the environment, It's good for your employees and it's good for your bottom line. Employees in such green firms are more motivated, receive more training, and benefit from better interpersonal relationships. The employees at green companies are therefore more productive than employees in more conventional firms.”

As more small businesses, consumers and Big Corp. embrace the green movement, cost is finally coming around to a more conventional playing field. These small business green ideas show how jumping on the Eco-friendly band wagon can be good on all fronts.

In other words, all of those toxins in the environment have a big impact on your growing child. So, I chose bedding and mattresses constructed from organic, all-natural materials.

Are There Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) In Your Mattress?

by Amber Merton @ PlushBeds Green Sleep Blog

What Are VOCs? Volatile organic compounds are chemicals that are used, in the manufacturing process, of many items found in our homes. The term “volatile” means that these are chemicals that can easily get into the air that you breathe each day and end up inside of your body. “Organic” means that they are carbon-based. U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies have discovered that VOCs Read More

Green Business Security

by @ Green Home Library

When it comes to security, there are several alternative green options that are just as efficient as conventional ones which currently support pollution and waste.

Green Hacker Security

These days it is essential to hire an online security company to protect your small business computer system. The problem is that many of the energy sources from these huge servers are a significant drain on natural resources, threatening water conservation, clean air and global warming.

When shopping for or switching to an online security company ask if they support any alternative energy platforms to run their business. Whether solar or wind, hydro or hydrogen fuel, there are no more excuses why non-alternative would be a better choice.

Lock it Smart

Smart locks are taking over the security industry, reducing material waste and extra energy use. You may not think of keys as a problem but like any raw material they are a small part of excessive steel production.

By using smart locks you do not need a key or even a card to enter and exit, instead access is granted via computer or smart phone, speeding up production and increasing revenue. No more lost keys, broken doors or long gas guzzling drives to open a lock or handoff a key.

Work in Motion

Installing motion detectors can significantly cut back on wasted light energy. Rather than a light that burns for hours straight, a motion detector only illuminates when the security beam is breached. This saves energy as well as elongates the life of your light bulb. Many motion detectors are solar powered storing enough energy during the day to operate throughout the night.

Get an Umbrella

Most insurance companies offer full coverage which includes vehicles, property and damage. By bundling all of these under the same plan your financial security becomes a financial and environmental win. This is because it requires less office supplies, power and so many other intricacies which would most likely double if you had separate plans. If a security team is needed, ask if your insurance company provides and covers this part of your small business as well.

Utilize AI and VR

The future is practically on top of us as artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) permeate beyond gaming and into the medical, transportation and military sectors as well. When it comes to environmental benefits, these two technologies are poised to be the ruling factor on how you run your life, business and what carbon footprint you emit.

AI is currently taking over the home improvement industry with the smart home application by controlling temperature, lighting, and appliance usage. This is now being applied to small businesses and is showing a significant impact. Whether kitchen adjustments, bathroom water utilization or office space energy control, AI has taken the guesswork out of energy use, automatically saving resources and money. When it comes to small business security, AI offers real time audio alerts regarding intrusion, both physical or online and brings more user ease for smart lock applications as well.

VR is offering an opportunity for the small business and/or consumer user to enter worlds that are both engaging and educational showing front and center how global warming, pollution and lack of social consciousness is affecting our planet. This can be a consumer draw as it is capable of “wowing” customers while at the same time keeping them in your space.

VR is also being used to reduce small business ordering waste by allowing “virtual stock” to determine space allocation as well as reordering prompts. On the security platform, VR brings night vision as well as bird’s eye and around corner viewing. Add in drones to the mix and VR combined with AI can cover security for small businesses that include zoo layouts, large warehouses or farm spaces.

Loud and Clear

Any green addition to your small business is also an opportunity to alert your consumers or clients to how you are on-board with sustainable solutions. It has already been studied how a large subset that is rapidly turning mainstream embraces and supports green businesses, especially small businesses. By utilizing and advertising your green security system you are adding to your potential future business while helping save our planet at the same time.

Green business security is changing for the better. It offers environmental benefits as well as bottom line increase, consumer draw and peace of mind.

Do You Have Indoor Allergies?

by @ Sophia Ruan Gushee | Detox Your Homes | Toxin Free Living

by Angela Cummings and Sophia Ruan Gushée

Do you sometimes come home after being out of the house all day and experience chronic symptoms: scratchy throat, headache, itchy eyes, or stuffy nose? Could it be an allergic reaction to your indoor environment?

According to the Center for Disease Control, “More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year.”(1) Allergies can lead to a chronic illness, which becomes costly. The Center for Disease Control estimates that “Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. with an annual cost in excess of $18 billion.”(2)

Indoor Allergy Symptoms

Indoor allergies can be hard to distinguish from an illness. For example, allergies and the typical cold or flu share symptoms: fatigue, nasal congestion, headache, fever, and cough. Below explores a few differences though.

Allergies

Allergic reactions involve the “release of IgE (immunoglobulin E) antibodies, histamine, and other chemicals [released by] the immune system.”(3)

Symptoms that are different from a cold or flu are:(4)

  • wheezing
  • shortness of breath
  • rash
  • nausea
  • vomiting

Sometimes the chronic condition, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), can be confused with allergic reactions since they, too, share similar symptoms. However, since MCS does not involve the release of IgE antibodies or histamines, it is not considered an allergic reaction.(5)

Cold/Flu

Symptoms that are different from allergies are:(6)

  • sore throat
  • muscle or body aches
  • discolored mucus (yellow or green)

4 Typical Indoor Allergy Causes

1. Dust

Household dust is made up of particles that fall off of pets, people, and objects. It includes pet dander, bug parts, dead skin cells (from you and me), clothing lint, mold spores, bath towel fuzz, plastic bits from computers and electronics, and chemicals that comprise our household items (e.g. pesticides on fur, chemical cleaners, and fire retardants in electronics).

2. Chemicals

Chemicals in phthalates, surfactants/sulfates and VOCs may cause or trigger allergic reactions.(7) Examples of how these chemicals enter our home include:

  • Phthalates: caulk, plastic food containers, pesticides, textiles, upholstery, and children’s toys
  • Surfactants/sulfates: adhesives used in furniture, leather, paints, and textiles
  • VOCs: candles, synthetic essential oils, cleaning products, air fresheners, composite wood, furniture, and flooring

3. Mold

Mold is found indoors and outdoors in various amounts. It can enter your house from open windows and doors, heating and cooling systems, and be tracked in on clothing, shoes, pets, and people.(8)

4. Dust mites

Dust mites are tiny little arthropods that are similar to spiders. They eat the dried skin that humans shed every day. People can be allergic to the dust mite, their waste, and their deceased bodies, all of which can be found in couches, carpeting, dust, stuffed toys, pillows,, and bedding.(9)

Do You Have Indoor Allergies?

Indoor allergies can be diagnosed in two primary ways: by allergy testing, or by paying attention to patterns.

Allergy Testing

Allergists can test for reactions to pet dander, mold, dust mites and even some chemicals (like formaldehyde). The testing is typically done one of two ways: skin test and blood test.

  • Skin test: The skin test is the most common allergy test used. It’s relatively painless, affordable, and shows results in 20 minutes.(10)
  • Blood test: The blood test requires drawing and analyzing blood. It takes longer to get results.(11)

Patterns

There are typically patterns that develop with allergic reactions. For example, when you pet an animal your nose gets stuffy. Or when you spend time in your house during nights and weekends, you have a frequent headaches. These patterns could hint at allergy triggers.

3 Tips for Indoor Allergies

You can follow these general guidelines when considering how to reduce indoor allergens. However, start with your trusted medical professional, who can provide individualized health care that takes your entire health (history, current illnesses, specific symptoms, etc) into consideration.

1. Consult an Allergist and/or Environmental Medicine Doctor

Indoor allergies can be caused by a combination of factors. Traditional allergists consider factors such as dust, dust mites, pets whereas traditional Environmental Medicine professionals consider the “clinical aspects of humans and their environment.”(12) The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (https://www.aaemonline.org/aboutus.php) is one tool available to find physicians and other environmental medicine professionals.

2. Avoid allergens

The most effective way to stop allergic reactions without medication is to avoid the allergen. For example, if flowers are causing an allergic reaction, avoid bringing fresh flowers into the house. Similarly, if chemicals are causing an allergic reaction, avoid buying products such as air fresheners, paints and finishes with high amounts of VOCs, synthetic materials, and other chemicals that could be harmful to health.

3. Control the indoor environment

Keep your house dusted and cleaned to help reduce allergy triggers such as mold, dust, dust mites, and chemicals that can stick to dust, clothes, drapes, furniture, bedding and other materials. Fully clean your home with a HEPA vacuum or damp rag at least once per week to minimize dust.

Why It’s Actually Awesome That Hawaii Is So Ridiculously Expensive

by Alden Wicker @ Ecocult

At first, I was frustrated by the high price of everything on Hawaii. In fact, I almost felt dumb for visiting. Basic resort rooms at $300 a night. Paying an extra $350 on top of the $700 plane tickets for one Economy Comfort seat (and sitting separately from him in a cheaper seat) just so my new 6’5″ husband could walk when he got off the 12-hour flight. The $175 grocery bill for a week of breakfast and bagged lunches. Ouch! Why visit Hawaii when you could get the same tropical vibes for a third of the price in Mexico or Thailand? But midway through our trip, something switched. We found pristine, empty beaches in Hana, ate locally caught seafood and locally grown chocolate and coffee, and hiked for seven hours in Haleakala’s crater without seeing more than ten other people. And it struck me: Hawaii is an example of accidental environmentalism. You see, there is a term called “externalities.” When it comes to the environment and the economy, it means all the stuff that is damaged as a side effect of economic development: pollution, overfishing, deforestation, asthma, climate change…. every ecosystem damage you can think of. The very basic […]

Let Natural Cloth Wipe Away Paper Towel Waste

by @ Sophia Ruan Gushee | Detox Your Homes | Toxin Free Living

by Angela Cummings and Sophia Ruan Gushée

Paper towels are handy for cleaning up a milk spill, drying hands, and cleaning the house. Maybe a little too handy.

In 2017, consumers spent $39,203 million on household paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, tissues, etc). Plus, consumer spending went up by $1,958 million over a two-year period, with spending totaling a lesser $37,245 million in 2015. (1)

Let’s look at it another way.

Americans use 741 pounds of paper each year, on average. Nearly 55 of those pounds are for household paper products such as paper towels, napkins, tissues and toilet paper. (2)

Per year!

That’s a lot of paper products.

As users of so many paper products it’s worth asking, are chemicals found in these products and if so, are there nontoxic alternatives?

Are Chemicals Found in Paper Towels?

Paper products, such as paper towels can contain dyes, inks, fragrances, chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, adhesives, and other chemicals. Here are a few of the specifics:

  • CDFs. Chlorodibenzofurans (CDFs) is a chemical group with over 135 types of chemicals. They may affect the nervous system, respiratory system, and irritate the skin and eyes. CDF has been found in paper towels, coffee filters, milk cartons, and tampons. (3)
  • Triclosan. Triclosan is added to products as an antimicrobial with the intention of reducing, or preventing, bacterial contamination. (4) The chemical can be found in soaps, toothpastes, cosmetics, clothing, toys, furniture, and paper products, such as paper towels or napkins. It can also be found in the bodies of most Americans. Triclosan may be affecting the hormone and reproductive systems, and causing an increased sensitivity to allergens. (5)
  • Formaldehyde. Paper towels have been found to contain formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a chemical in the Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) family, and off-gasses into the air. People can be exposed to formaldehyde through touching products as well. (6) Of course, with paper towel touching (especially when wiping our hands) exposure is pretty common.
  • BPS. Created as an alternative to the toxic chemical BPA (bisphenol A), BPS (bisphenol S) has been found to likely have the same effect on people’s health. (7) Found in urine samples from US subjects, BPS may affect the hormone systems. Products such as newspaper, food paper, and paper towels have been found to have BPS in them. The BPS may have been from the recycling process. (8)

Are There Non Toxic Paper Towels?

There are companies that make paper towels with nontoxic ingredients, such as using peroxide instead of chlorine bleach for whitening. Some companies simply leave ingredients, such as dyes and inks out of products. It’s tough to know for sure though.

Manufacturing companies are not required to list ingredients on paper towels, keeping consumers in the dark about the full list of ingredients used to make the product. The next best thing consumers can do is to choose paper towels that say it does not have dyes, fragrances, or bleach in it.

Another option is to ditch the paper towels (nearly) all together, and use fabric towels instead. Limit use of paper towels to cleaning soiled areas, such as toilets. Instead of using paper towels for dusting and wiping surfaces, use rags (old or new!) for cleaning the house.

Hang hand towels in the kitchen and bathrooms for drying hands after washing. Have one or two extra hand towels hand-y (ha!) when entertaining guests so that towels can be changed if they become too wet. When buying new hand towels, choose towels made from organic, natural fabric and dyes plus those without finishes.

Breaking the habit of using so many paper towels (and other paper products) may take a little getting used to but can be a worthwhile change. There’s a potential to reduce the amount of money that the household is spending on paper products, reduce the amount of chemicals in the home, and reduce the poundage of paper products used per year. An all around win!

The Shocking Dangers Of Plug-In Air Fresheners & Homemade Alternatives

Mould Testing Overview - Pros and Cons of Different Methods

by noreply@blogger.com (Corinne) @ My Chemical-Free House

First I want to talk about the most reliable test which is how you feel in the house compared to other places. Unfortunately this is not always as simple as it sounds to execute. There are different ways to undertake this experiment. The simplest way is to stay in your backyard in a tent or all metal trailer without bringing any possessions from the house. The most obvious complication here is that you will need to go inside to use the washroom unless you get a porta potty! You may also be so sensitive that the house has contaminated the air outside (I have experienced being outside of a house and being able to smell the mould).

The next option would be to stay somewhere where other people recovering from mould illness (and MCS) have felt better. This could be a campground, KOA cabin, Airbnb or other rental. I have a lot more details on this in my post on the Locations Effect and Mould Sabbatical.

Once you have gotten "clear" and done some recovering you might be wondering how do you test a house to find out if it's good? Some people can walk into a house and know if it's good for them. But even the most sensitive people usually need to request to spend 3 nights trialling the house. This is not always an option, but you should ask. Usually people sleep better in a house that is mould free, but me and other CIRS patients have found that there is some mould that puts you into a zombie sleep where you sleep more (and then get sicker). So even a three-night test can be tricky.

It is also good to verify the house is safe with mould testing. The most common test for CIRS (mould patients) is the ERMI. It is highly recommended by Shoemaker certified doctors as the test to use. The range of the ERMI scores goes from minus 10 to positive 20. You need a score or 2 or lower to be treated and recover from mould illness according to Dr. Shoemaker.

Other types of mould tests can also be useful. A tape lift will get you definitive results on visible mould. I look at the options below. This is a very simple overview just to give you the general idea of what is out there in a way that is not overwhelming - you may want to look more into each of these different methods. Please note that my sources were biased towards mould advocates Lisa Petrison from Paradigm Change, Greg Muske from Biotoxin Journey, Dr. Shoemaker and Cheryl Ciecko, an architect who specialises in mould. I have attempted to cross-check their information. However, going with information from the companies that do house inspections can be biased and contradictory. (All sources at end of post, which you can read for more detail).

ERMI

Cons

- Doesn’t work well in brand new houses.

- You need dust that has settled for a while (wait 4-6 weeks to re-test an area).

- Having very little dust or a high amount of dust can skew results.

- Having a high amount of outside dirt inside can skew results. Having high or low outdoor spores counts can skew results.

- May not be an even distribution of spores throughout the house if mould is only coming from one place and the house is large.

- It is known to miss major mould problems when people are very sick in their house. Similarly, after a remediation, a CIRS patient can still be sick from the mycotoxins left behind despite a low score.

Pros

-"Only the ERMI and HERTSMI have been associated with sequential activation of innate immune responses, not air testing.” Dr. Shoemaker. Meaning it is the only test that he found that is consistently in line with lab results for CIRS, despite its drawbacks.

- Vacuum method can pick of heavy spores like Stachy and the Swifer method can also be used to pick up places with accumulated dust that has been there for 4 months. John Banta always tries to use the vacuum method over swipe method.

- It's pretty affordable at $300. You do it yourself. The lab recommended is Mycometrics.

HERTSMI-2

-Similar to ERMI but tests for a handful of moulds most commonly associated with water damaged buildings. It is cheaper than ERMI. I would go for the full ERMI and you can still calculate your HERTSMI value from that. Shoemaker certified doctors will consider your HERTSMI score as well as ERMI score.

Tape Lifts

Cons

- You need to have visible mould.

- It assists you with what type of mould it is and not how widespread the problem is.

Pros

- Tells you what kind of mould you have when you have a visible sample.

- Allows you to know if this is a toxic mould.

- You can do it yourself.

- It's the cheaper way to test for visible mould.

I used this DIY Tape Lift to test a few areas in a house I go into often. The results came back showing me what type of mould it was. It confirmed that the mould was one that is toxic that comes from water damage. Though you need to get a decent amount of mould on the tape otherwise your results will just show scattered pieces.

Spore Traps (Air Test)

Cons

- Needs to be taken near the source, so you have to know where the source is.

- Shoemaker says: "The industry standard of sampling the air for spores is not an acceptable substitute for many reasons. One of the main limitations is that over 99% of the particles that carry the inflammagens from water damaged buildings are smaller than 3 microns. Spore traps can only detect particles that are larger than 3 microns and therefore, miss over 99% of the inflammagens.”

- Spore traps identify round, intact spores. So they will not catch evidence of past problem that have left mycotoxins.

- Can miss/underreport certain heavy species like stachy.

- Expensive.

Pros

- The test is more standardised than tape lifts, swabs, cultures, and mould-dogs, they claim.

- It is the most widely used mould test.

- You can compare inside and outside air.

Dishes

Cons

- Hard to know where to place the dish to get capture the mould if you don’t know where the mould is coming from.

- Doesn’t get you an accurate relative reading since some mould is harder to catch and some proliferate faster in the dish than others.

- Stachy is a slow grower compared to other moulds in the dish.

Pros

- Can be used in multiple places to compare and for general observation.

- Can give you more details on the exact type of mould than other tests.

- Inexpensive.

- John Banta does a culture of the dust used for ERMI to compare and get more details

Here is one you can do yourself.

Mould Dogs

Cons

- Can only detect a handful of moulds.

- Hard to know if they are well trained, look for good references of the company.

- They can’t tell you if it’s high amount of mould or a trace from after a remediation.

- The dog can only sniff in areas where they can reach.

Pros

- They are good at finding the source if it is within their reach.

- The dog can smell both live and dead mould.

- You can pinpoint the area where you need to do further testing.

VOC testing

Cons

- There is controversy around the accuracy of this testing.

- Not widely used.

Pros

- Test the levels of mycotoxins and other VOCs in the air.

Here is a company that does this kind of testing that is recommended. It goes to an AIHA accredited lab.

Give Your Kids a Tribe (instead of more stuff)

I have learned many important lessons during my eleven years as a parent. When you have to be somewhere, plan to leave at least 30 minutes early in order to get there on time. Embrace your kids' individual personalities instead of trying to fit them into a preconceived idea of the perfect child. Laugh at their nonsense knock-knock jokes. Put together that ocean puzzle with them for the thousandth time because you will regret not spending the time with them later. And give your children a tribe instead of more toys.

Fighting Dry Winter Skin

You woke up this morning and, seemingly out of nowhere, your skin feels dry, looks scaly, and fine lines are more visible than ever.  No, you didn’t age ten years overnight. Winter showed up!  With winter comes a swift decline in humidity, which “steals” moisture from our skin almost instantly. This can change the texture […]

Paleo Banana Ice Cream Pies (Sweetener Free)

Shopping Guide: Diaper Rash Care

by onepartsunshine @ One Part Sunshine

Only the safest and most natural products should be applied to your baby's skin. This includes diaper rash creams and balms. Some people swear by creams, others by ointments and others by balms. I have included a selection of each. These products are in no particular order and none have an EWG rating of more than 1 (meaning they are super safe and natural). I always used California Baby Diaper Rash Cream and Motherlove Diaper Rash & Thrush Relief with my kids and found both really effective (although I would not recommend California Baby for open cuts because it can burn). I used The Honest Company Healing Balm in lieu of petroleum jelly for things like lubricating thermometers.

Nontoxic Window Curtains: Tips to find the best ones for your home

by @ Sophia Ruan Gushee | Detox Your Homes | Toxin Free Living

by Angela Cummings and Sophia Ruan Gushée

When detoxing the home, details—such as the materials and maintenance of curtains—can impact your health.

Similar to table runners, furniture fabrics, bathroom towels and other types of textiles, curtains can be made from natural materials or synthetic chemicals. Curtains made from natural materials are healthier since they contain fewer chemicals.

Healthier textiles are made from natural sources, like plants and even animals. Examples include cotton, hemp, wool, bamboo, and silk.

Nontoxic Window Curtains

To select nontoxic window curtains, we should assess the textiles, dyes, and fabric finishes. Chemicals often found in each of these components include chlorine, formaldehyde, pesticides, and PFCs. They may contribute to health issues, like asthma and cancer.

Below are tips for choosing natural materials, dyes and finishes.

MATERIALS

  • Cotton. Made from cottonseed, cotton is a popular and affordable nontoxic curtain material. Buying conventional cotton contributes to practices that pollute our environment with pesticides. These pesticides are absorbed by the cotton plant and cottonseed that are used to make cotton fabrics. There is conflicting evidence as to how much pesticide remains in cotton fabric and whether that amount is significant enough to threaten human health. I think it's hard to generalize since cotton is grown and manufactured from such diverse practices that it's safer to buy organic cotton for items that have frequent contact with your skin (like pajamas).
  • Organic Cotton. Organic cotton is grown without pesticides. It is considered one of the least toxic materials. Organic cotton curtains are getting easier to find and are carried by several popular mainstream stores.
  • Silk. Silk is the fiber that the silkworm weaves for its cocoon. Silk curtains can dress up a room, giving a shimmery look without added chemicals.
  • Linen. Made from the flax plant, linen is sometimes used to make sheer curtains that give privacy while allowing the sunlight to shine through.

DYES

Naturally-colored materials can be labeled as “color grown,” or list the dye source as clay, spices, nuts, roots, tree bark, and plant parts.(1) Dyes labeled as “low-impact dye” are made from synthetic materials (chemicals), but are considered by some to be better than standard dyes. There are varying views about low-impact dyes and their effect on health.

FINISHES

Curtains come with a variety of finishes that may or may not be listed on the label. If you see words like “easy care,” “protected,” or “wrinkle-resistant,” there may be chemical finishes added. Avoid curtains that contain finishes.

3RD PARTY CERTIFICATIONS

Opt for window curtains that have been certified by a credible third-party. Here are a few to look for:

  • GOTS Certified as “organic.” The GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) considers the material fiber, dye, finish, added notions (buttons, zippers, etc), tag, and packaging material when certifying textiles. Look for the GOTS organic certification for products that are 95-100 percent organic. Be aware that GOTS also has a certification for products “made with organic,” which allow for 30 percent of materials to be non-organic. However, these products must state “made with” instead of solely stating “organic”. (2)
  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This is a certification accepted and used worldwide. Material fiber, dye, finish, and notions are considered when certifying textiles. There are four classifications with varying criteria for certification. Curtains fall into Product Class IV, which has less strict requirements than Product Class I.(3)
  • USDA Organic. The U.S. Department of Agriculture certifies raw natural fibers (cotton, wool, flax). USDA organic certification only considers the fiber; it does not consider dye, finish, or notions. (4)

Maintenance

In addition to choosing nontoxic curtains, maintenance and cleaning of curtains can help create a healthier home.

Curtains attract dust, mold, and chemicals that are floating in the air. Dust contains dead cells, bug parts, mold spores, pet dander, and particles from clothing, curtains, furniture, and other household products. In addition, chemicals such as flame retardants and SVOCs, absorb onto (attach reversibly to, without bonding) (5) indoor surfaces such as dust.

Below are three curtain maintenance tips to help detox your home.

  1. House dust has been found to cause allergy (6) and asthma reactions.(7) Vacuuming (with a HEPA filter) your home and curtains often is one strategy for controlling allergy and asthma.
  2. Buy curtains you can wash easily. Wash curtains every week to two weeks in order to keep dust to a minimum.
  3. Avoid “dry clean only” curtains. The dry cleaning solution is a mix of chemicals that may be causing health conditions, including asthma. (8)

Summary

Replacing synthetic curtains with natural curtains is one way of detoxing your living room, playroom, bedroom, and kitchen curtains. In summary:

  1. Consider choosing curtains made from natural materials, natural dyes and those that do not have added finishes.
  2. Choose curtains that are washable to easily clean them weekly or bi-weekly in the washing machine instead of having them dry cleaned.

10 Green Ways to Get Through Winter’s Days

by @ Green Home Library

Winter is here in full swing and sometimes it can take its toll both physically and financially. It can also become so uncomfortable for some that remaining green seems difficult while just trying to forge through inclement weather, stay warm or simply deal with the drastic change of sunlight. Obviously the Northeast and Midwest do get the brunt of it, however, even if you are in a warm weather belt winter changes are relative to what you are used to. Below are 10 green ways to get through winter’s days which may hopefully remind you to stay the course as well as possibly give you some new info.

Layer Up

Before you run to the heat dial, crank it up and deal with the high utility bill later, put on some layers. So many people get used to the convenience of traipsing around in light, comfortable clothing they forget that a few layers will save money, save energy and keep you healthy as blood circulation stays warm and flowing.

Do Not Retire the Bike

Most folks store away their bicycle until better weather emerges. Why? Save gas all year round and winterize your ride with fatter tires, slip-free pedals and tight, warm, riding duds.

Be Nice When You De-Ice

Don’t pollute the environment with toxic chemical de-icing salts. Use calcium magnesium acetate or calcium chloride instead.

Have Non-Electric Fun

Sitting home and using more energy than you need can have you lethargic and gaining weight in no time. Get out and sled, ski, snowshoe, anything physical.

Re-Light

Winter is the best time to change all your incandescent light bulbs and replace them with bright, vapor-free LED bulbs. Bright white or cool blue can help the dark doldrums that come with winter.

Feel the Seal

Any simple sealing of drafty spots will go a long way in keeping expensive energy in.

Keep it Cold

Some estimate that upwards of 90% of washing machine energy is used to heat the water for a hot wash. Plus, in the winter months it takes more energy due to frigid water temperature.

Essential Aroma

Being indoors during the winter means smelling more odors. Don’t succumb to land filler, chemically treated, electricity depleting room deodorizers– get some essential oils. Sprinkle such scents as lavender, jasmine, lemon, peppermint and more on old porous wood (driftwood works great) or even dab on cotton and place in a tea strainer. Your room air will naturally blossom.

Get Board

After your outdoor activities, get out the board games and stay off the electronics even longer.

Empty the Fridge

If a bunch of glass and plastic containers are eating up your refrigerator space, use the cool outdoors to do the work.

Why make the winter an energy guzzling world of boring hibernation. Keep the television to a minimum and connect through everyday green practices as well as coming up with some of your own. There is always an opportunity to embrace our planet.

5 Healthy & Eco-Friendly Ways To Reduce Plastic In Your Everyday Life

Plastic does not biodegrade and plastic gives off toxic chemicals that when ingested or worn, can have long lasting consequences. We're beginning the quest to open our minds to alternatives, in both what we use and what we throw away. If we ask more questions and look deeper, we can change our approach to plastic use and chase the negative impact we may have on our environment and ourselves.

Shopping Guide: Baby Wipes

by onepartsunshine @ One Part Sunshine

At home, I used cloth baby wipes when changing diapers. But when I was out and about, I found disposable baby wipes so much more convenient. I really tried to use nothing but cloth wipes and diapers but it was causing more stress than I was willing to handle. Plus, disposable wipes are great for wiping hands, faces and car seats too. I still use them now even though both of my kids are well out of diapers.

POPs, Those Toxic, Manmade Persistent Organic Pollutants

by @ Green Home Library

But This Time It’s Nature Doing the Dirty Work!

In the late 1970s, the U.S. government banned a group of manmade chemical compounds known as PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) thanks to scientific evidence that they caused harm to both people and animals.

This group of toxins, along with DDT, PCBs, and PBDEs, are all classified as POPs, or persistent organic pollutants – chemicals with such serious side effects that nations around the globe joined to ban them in 2004 in what is known as the Stockholm Convention.

Nature Makes POPs, Too

It was a magnificent effort, but one that Nature herself may be undermining. According to some scientists, certain bacteria, fungi, plants and waterborne organisms may now be making their own, counterfeit versions of PCBs, PBDEs, and other banned compounds.

Scientists don’t yet know whether their production is part of a natural process or some response to the chemicals we have already introduced into earth’s biosphere. The most burning question, however, may be why Nature is reproducing these POPs?

Take a group of chemicals called organohalogens, which are being found in seabird eggs along both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, according to researcher Sheryl Tittlemier of Carleton University.

These organic halogen compounds are structurally very similar to manmade DDT, halogenated dioxins, and brominated flame retardants. In nature, they are produced by marine organisms such as the acorn worm, for example, and production is verified by carbon-14 dating – a highly conclusive method for anything less than 50,000 years old.

The list of naturally produced POPs currently approaches 6,000, and challenges the perception that humans have produced more of these toxic compounds than Nature!

Natural POPs Making Their Way Up the Food Chain

Most scientists support the idea that these Nature-made POPs are as harmful to species as the ones chemical companies like Monsanto, Dow and 3M once made.

Several studies – one from the University of Missouri – have found trace amounts of POPs in pet food (and, of course, pets). The worst offender is BPA, or Bisphenol A, found in the lining of far too many pet food cans. The most troubling aspect of this problem is that at least two of the manufacturers lied about the presence of bisphenol A in their cans.

Traces of hydroxylated PBDEs have also been found in humans. The greatest risk is to people eating a marine diet, including fish; shellfish like oysters, crabs and lobster; whales and dolphins; seaweeds and microalgae; squid; sea cucumbers; jellyfish; and frogs.

Women in the Faroe Islands, who commonly ate whale blubber, had traces of these “natural” PCBs in their breast milk. Unfortunately, these naturally produced compounds can’t be banned as easily as manmade PCBs, so scientists are using analytical techniques like genome sampling to figure out which organisms are synthesizing the chemicals, how they do it, and why.

So far, the worst culprits appear to be marine sponges, whose bodies harbor 10 percent or more (by dry weight) of polybrominated compounds! Good reason, if you needed one, not to buy bath sponges.

But Why?

The immediate question is what risk do these “Nature-made” chemicals present. The biggest question is why would Nature manufacture toxic chemicals man has already banned?

The answer, suggest scientists, is the result of chemical warfare, this time by bacteria.

“Bacteria use chemicals to protect themselves from threats and to taste bad to predators,” notes Vinayak Agarwal of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The same aptitude that makes bacteria able to engage in chemical warfare may also make them highly adept at breaking down similar manmade chemicals in the environment. Take, for example, a General Electric Superfund site along the Hudson River in New York, where some naturally occurring microbes have learned to break down PCBs released into the river for three decades.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Nature could reverse our carelessness with chemicals? It might even make the extra body burden of persistent organic chemicals acceptable.

Or would it?

Strategies for Reducing New Carpet Odor

by @ Sophia Ruan Gushee | Detox Your Homes | Toxin Free Living

by Angela Cummings and Sophia Ruan Gushée

I was in junior high when my parents last installed new carpet. Well, at least, that was the last time I lived there. My sisters and I were on summer break, and so excited to get rid of the worn out carpeting that the previous owners had left behind.

Giddy with excitement, the three of us sat on the couch outside of the living room, watching the installers lay carpet and secure it with tack strips. After a short time, we retreated upstairs. I remember feeling dizzy and nauseous as we left our post.

That was quite some time ago.

Even after all these years, I vividly remember that new carpet smell.  It was so potent.

What I didn’t know back then is that the ‘new carpet smell’ was created by chemicals off-gassing into the air.

Chemicals found in carpet.

Standard carpeting is made from synthetic fibers, dyes, and finishes. Chemicals that are commonly used to make and/or protect carpeting include:

  • PBDEs
  • PFCs
  • Flame Retardants
  • Preservatives such as formaldehyde and sodium benzoate
  • Solvents including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • Surfactants/Sulfates

In addition, when chemicals mix, they may produce other toxic fumes that could be harmful to health. This is known as the chemical cocktail effect.  As an example, think of bleach and ammonia. When chlorine bleach is mixed with ammonia, it creates additional toxic gases called chloramines. (1)

These types of chemicals can also be found in the foam padding under carpeting, as well as in the adhesives during installation.

How do you get rid of new carpet fumes?

Getting rid of new carpet fumes can take some time, but planning in advance helps. Below are three tips.

1. Don’t bring them home.

The most effective way to have less carpet odor in the home is to not bring them home. Carpets and padding made from natural materials—such as organic wool or cotton—typically has fewer chemicals than synthetic carpeting and padding, which is made from several chemicals.  When installing carpeting, consider non-adhesive installation methods where possible. If adhesives are needed, choose adhesives that are lower in VOCs.

2. Air purifiers with carbon filters.

Investing in an air purifier may reduce the amount of new carpet fumes circulating in the home. Air purifiers come in many variations. Opt for one that has a carbon filter or “activated charcoal.” Please know the type of charcoal we’re talking about here is not the same as the charcoal used to grill. It’s a special type of charcoal (or carbon filter) meant to remove chemicals from the air.

3. Fresh air circulation.

Increase the amount of fresh air in the house. Open windows and larger doors such as a patio door to let the fresh air in. If possible, get a cross breeze by opening windows and doors opposite of each other to increase circulation. Turning on a fan will help circulate the fresh air as well.

The popular new carpet smell is familiar to anyone that has had new standard carpet installed. The smell can be stuck in memory for decades to come, and the health effects may stick around as well.

Consider installing solid surface flooring—such as tile or solid hardwood flooring—with area rugs instead of a fully carpeted floor. If carpet is non-negotiable, consider natural carpets with fewer VOCs, and padding made from natural materials, like cotton. Use installation methods that don’t require adhesives, if possible. If adhesives are required, choose those with fewer VOCs and overall fewer chemicals.

Today’s recipe is from Gillian Young, a holistic nutritionist who shares recipes and support for an autoimmune lifestyle. Hummus and veggies have always been one of my go-to healthy snacks. Where to Get Good Coffee in Granada, Nicaragua

by Abigail Davidson @ Ecocult

A decade ago, you would have had a difficult time finding high quality coffee in Nicaragua. Coffee farmers could make so much more money by exporting it that none of the good stuff stayed in the country. In recent years, however, there has been a growing community of people who want to keep some of their amazing coffee to enjoy themselves -- and I don't blame them one bit! Here are a few places where you can get your hands on some of the good stuff.

Triple Berry Cranberry Sauce.

by Sueson Vess @ Robyn Puglia

Named triple berry for the use of juice, whole fruit and dried fruit, this cranberry sauce is a family favorite modified over the years to switch from sugar to honey and reduced added sugars found in juice, marmalade and dried fruit. Finding acceptable alternatives can be challenging but worth the effort.  We love “St. Dalfour” 100% […]

Can You Fit Natural Products in Your Budget?

by Emma Rohmann @ Green at Home

The number one struggle I hear from members of my Green Product Forum about making the switch to healthier, greener, more natural products is time and money. OK, that’s two struggles. But they are more often than not connected. It’s not surprising. Green products are notoriously more expensive than their conventional counterparts, at least when […]

Alan Bell’s Story: Healing Multiple Chemical Sensitivities

by Lauren @ Empowered Sustenance

Note from Lauren: When I received Alan’s book, Poisoned, I read it in just a few sittings.  I’m regularly sent books for publicity consideration, and rarely do I feel so gripped by a review book that I can’t put it down. Alan’s story left me stunned with his journey, and horrified that the toxic materials in an office building could […]

Shopping Guide: Natural Deodorant for Men

by onepartsunshine @ One Part Sunshine

After more than six years, I am still using my homemade deodorant, and I am still loving it! It is not an anti-perspirant, but it keeps the smell in check and it lasts all day. It even works to neutralize smells if you forgot to put it on in the morning. My husband, however, is not in love with my deodorant. So, I am on a mission to find a nice, "manly," natural deodorant for my husband. One that is free of nasty ingredients such aluminum and parabens. I've done some research and found the following options.
