According to WebMD, when it comes to sleep quality, “to get it right, you’ve got to start with the basics and your mattress is the first building block to a restful slumber.” After all, if you’re tossing and turning all night, struggling to get your body into a pain-free position, your sleep quality will be poor, and your wellness will suffer. Let Natural Cloth Wipe Away Paper Towel Waste

by @ Sophia Ruan Gushee | Detox Your Homes | Toxin Free Living

by Angela Cummings and Sophia Ruan Gushée

Paper towels are handy for cleaning up a milk spill, drying hands, and cleaning the house. Maybe a little too handy.

In 2017, consumers spent $39,203 million on household paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, tissues, etc). Plus, consumer spending went up by $1,958 million over a two-year period, with spending totaling a lesser $37,245 million in 2015. (1)

Let’s look at it another way.

Americans use 741 pounds of paper each year, on average. Nearly 55 of those pounds are for household paper products such as paper towels, napkins, tissues and toilet paper. (2)

Per year!

That’s a lot of paper products.

As users of so many paper products it’s worth asking, are chemicals found in these products and if so, are there nontoxic alternatives?

Are Chemicals Found in Paper Towels?

Paper products, such as paper towels can contain dyes, inks, fragrances, chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, adhesives, and other chemicals. Here are a few of the specifics:

  • CDFs. Chlorodibenzofurans (CDFs) is a chemical group with over 135 types of chemicals. They may affect the nervous system, respiratory system, and irritate the skin and eyes. CDF has been found in paper towels, coffee filters, milk cartons, and tampons. (3)
  • Triclosan. Triclosan is added to products as an antimicrobial with the intention of reducing, or preventing, bacterial contamination. (4) The chemical can be found in soaps, toothpastes, cosmetics, clothing, toys, furniture, and paper products, such as paper towels or napkins. It can also be found in the bodies of most Americans. Triclosan may be affecting the hormone and reproductive systems, and causing an increased sensitivity to allergens. (5)
  • Formaldehyde. Paper towels have been found to contain formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a chemical in the Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) family, and off-gasses into the air. People can be exposed to formaldehyde through touching products as well. (6) Of course, with paper towel touching (especially when wiping our hands) exposure is pretty common.
  • BPS. Created as an alternative to the toxic chemical BPA (bisphenol A), BPS (bisphenol S) has been found to likely have the same effect on people’s health. (7) Found in urine samples from US subjects, BPS may affect the hormone systems. Products such as newspaper, food paper, and paper towels have been found to have BPS in them. The BPS may have been from the recycling process. (8)

Are There Non Toxic Paper Towels?

There are companies that make paper towels with nontoxic ingredients, such as using peroxide instead of chlorine bleach for whitening. Some companies simply leave ingredients, such as dyes and inks out of products. It’s tough to know for sure though.

Manufacturing companies are not required to list ingredients on paper towels, keeping consumers in the dark about the full list of ingredients used to make the product. The next best thing consumers can do is to choose paper towels that say it does not have dyes, fragrances, or bleach in it.

Another option is to ditch the paper towels (nearly) all together, and use fabric towels instead. Limit use of paper towels to cleaning soiled areas, such as toilets. Instead of using paper towels for dusting and wiping surfaces, use rags (old or new!) for cleaning the house.

Hang hand towels in the kitchen and bathrooms for drying hands after washing. Have one or two extra hand towels hand-y (ha!) when entertaining guests so that towels can be changed if they become too wet. When buying new hand towels, choose towels made from organic, natural fabric and dyes plus those without finishes.

Breaking the habit of using so many paper towels (and other paper products) may take a little getting used to but can be a worthwhile change. There’s a potential to reduce the amount of money that the household is spending on paper products, reduce the amount of chemicals in the home, and reduce the poundage of paper products used per year. An all around win!

Top Chemicals Found in the Home

by @ Sophia Ruan Gushee | Detox Your Homes | Toxin Free Living

by Angela Cummings and Sophia Ruan Gushée

Chemicals, chemicals here and there. Chemicals, chemicals everywhere!

It’s true. They’re all around us, which can be overwhelming at times.

How do you choose which chemicals to tackle first? Based on the book A to Z of D-Toxing: The Ultimate Guide to Reducing Our Toxic Exposures by Sophia Gushée, the top 10 chemicals (or families of chemicals) of concern and their health effects are described below. This list of common household chemicals can be used to learn, focus efforts, and strategize which chemicals to avoid.

Take a room-by-room tour of places where chemicals may be in your home.

1. KITCHEN

Cabinets & Shelves

Kitchen cabinets consume large amounts of wall space, holding dishes and packaged foods. Their beauty is one of the main focuses of a kitchen and can be seen by all.

What can’t be seen are the chemicals used to make those chemicals and shelves. Cabinets and shelves can contain chemicals from a family of chemicals known as solvents. Solvents are often used to make composite wood, paints, stains, and finishes.

  • Chemicals. Solvents are used to create solutions, minimize clumping, and increase dry times. They are often used in adhesives and resins that bind wood dust when making composite wood. Solvents may affect the nervous, reproductive, development, liver, kidney, and respiratory systems. They may also cause cancer.
  • Tips. Cabinets and shelves made from solid hardwood and finished with natural nontoxic paints, stains, and finishes are preferable. As a standard cabinet-building practice today, plywood is typically used to build the cabinet box (framework) and for the back panel (which holds the cabinets square and sturdy). Cabinet faces and doors (the part we see most) are typically made from composite wood, but is often available in solid hardwood. For the most nontoxic cabinets, cabinets made entirely of solid hardwood is ideal but is also expensive. When considering how to prioritize your budget, solid wood may not be a worthwhile option so choose composite woods that are free of formaldehyde. Focusing on which stains, adhesives, and paints you use are more affordable ways to detox your wood products.

Electronics

Electronics are everywhere: Computer stations for working, tablet devices displaying recipes, and “smart appliances” to remotely control settings and inform you when your steak is ready! Electronic devices heat up when in use. In order to minimize (and hopefully avoid) a fire hazard, chemical flame retardants are added to electronics.

  • Chemicals. Chemical flame retardants have been linked to health conditions that involve the immune, endocrine, reproductive, developmental and nervous systems. They also may contribute cancer.
  • Tips. Minimize the amount of electronics in your home. Since flame retardants are required by law to be added to electronics, the best way to minimize exposure from electronics is to minimize how much you have at home. As a bonus, this will help minimize electromagnetic fields.

2. LIVING ROOM

Furniture

There are many parts to furniture: the structure, padding, covering, and finishes that require different types of material. For example, furniture structure can be made from wood varieties, metal, and plastic, while padding can be made from foam, latex, cotton, or wool. Coverings can be made from leather varieties, synthetic materials, and have various fabric finishes; while wood finishes could be in the form of paint, stains, and sealants. In any style of furniture, there can be chemicals classified as volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

  • Chemicals. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) fall within the solvent chemical family. VOCs can affect health both in the short-term and long-term. The impact can range from irritation of the eyes and respiratory system to dizziness and nausea to cognitive inabilities. Long-term effects can include damage to organ systems (such as the liver and kidneys), and the nervous system. VOCs may also contribute to cancer.
  • Tips. Furniture made from natural materials—such as hardwood, cotton, and wool—typically have fewer VOCs than furniture made from synthetic materials, like composite woods, foam, and polyester. If the furniture has a paint, stain, or sealant, choose zero- or low-VOC products.

Drapes, Blankets & Coverings

Stain repellent fabric can be found in furniture coverings, drapes, and blankets, making them easily cleanable when liquid is spilled or splashed onto them. One of the chemicals used to create a stain repellent is in the nanoparticle family. Antimicrobials are also in this family of chemicals.

  • Chemicals. Nanoparticles that have been tested on animals have resulted in behavior, metabolism, inflammation, damage to cell structure, development issues, and neurological damage. The effect on humans is unknown but thought to easily affect the human brain and organs since their minuscule size could more easily travel into the body.
  • Tips. Manufacturers are not required to include nanoparticles on labels, making it tough for consumers to avoid. Initial tips for avoiding them are twofold: avoid sprays and powders with nanoparticles (or minimize sprays and powders in general), and avoid applying creams with nanoparticles over cuts (or avoid applying creams, lotions, etc. over open wounds as a general rule).

3. BATHROOM

Soaps, Toothpastes, Shaving Creams & Other Personal Care Items

Personal care items—such as soaps, toothpastes, shaving creams, and facial scrubs—often contain tiny plastic pieces called microbeads. They’ve been used to give a little abrasion to otherwise smooth products to help exfoliate and give texture.

  • Chemicals. Microbeads added to products is a relatively new fad so the health effects are not fully known yet, but dentists suspect that microbeads may be contributing to dental-related diseases. The tiny pieces of plastic can get stuck in the gums and between teeth, and trap bacteria. The environmental impact may be significant and lead to an impact on human health. Water treatment equipment is not able to catch such small plastic particles,, causing the microbeads to end up in lakes. The microbeads look like fish eggs, which may be eaten by fish and other lake-residing animals. And humans could be eating those fish. (1)
  • Tips. Exfoliate with natural products—like salt, sugar, or ground nut shells—that can be easily added to nontoxic soaps to give a similar lightly-abrasive texture to your cleaners. Loofah sponges are another natural alternative. Be sure to dry the sponge completely so that it doesn’t mold.

Cosmetics & Hair Styling

Beauty products such as cosmetics and hair styling gels and sprays make us look marvelous on the outside, but may harm our insides. Petroleum distillates are one of several chemicals found in personal care products, such as lip balms, mascaras and hair products.

  • Chemicals. Petroleum distillates are made from crude oil (the same oil used to make gasoline and kerosene) that has been distilled, processed, and refined. They  accumulate in bodies and may contribute to cancer. It has been prohibited or restricted in the European Union, but is still used in the U.S.
  • Tips. Petroleum distillates are required to be listed on product labels, making it easier to spot products that contain it. The complexity comes in the number of names for petroleum distillates. Here are a few names that are more commonly known: petroleum, petroleum jelly, mineral oil, mineral spirits, kerosene, white spirits. Choose cosmetics and hair sprays that don’t contain these ingredients. Look for cosmetics, hair styling, and other personal care products that are made from natural ingredients.

4. NURSERY

Children’s Stuff

Little babies urinate approximately 20 times per day and need their diaper changed every 2-3 hours.(2) That means their little butts are wiped 8-12 times per day. Those baby wipes commonly contain chemicals, including glycols.

  • Chemicals. Glycols are a type of alcohol that is used to clean the skin and prevent moisture loss. They have been found to cause dermatitis (skin condition), birth defects, and damage the reproductive and kidney systems.
  • Tips. Wipe little butts with organic, reusable, cotton cloths (wash cloth or cloth diaper), damp paper towel, toilet paper, or cotton balls. If standard wipes are used, select those that are unbleached, chlorine-free, alcohol-free, paraben-free, and fragrance-free.

Toys

Children’s toys, such as bath toys and sponges, sometimes have antibacterial chemicals—such as triclosan—added to them to keep the toy from molding. Some toy manufacturers and distributors suggest cleaning the toy with antibacterial soap. While well-intended, the chemicals used to create antibacterial products may be harmful to health.

  • Chemicals. Triclosan is an antibacterial and disinfectant. It may be affecting health by disrupting thyroid and other hormones, and doing harm to the liver and immune system. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulates the use of triclosan (and other antimicrobials) as a pesticide in products like counter cleaners, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates triclosan (and other antimicrobials) as drugs and antiseptic products such as hand cleaners.(3)
  • Tips. Avoid cleaning toys with antibacterial soaps or sprays. Toys that are labeled “antibacterial” may contain triclosan or other chemicals linked to health conditions. Third-party organizations such as HealthStuff (https://www.ecocenter.org/healthy-stuff) has a searchable database and develops reports advising of healthier products, including children’s toys.

5. WHOLE HOUSE

Cleaning Products

Cleaning products made from chemicals have gained attention in mainstream media over the past few years and continues to be a concern for many. Used on counters, floors, bathtubs, sinks, windows, and a host of other surfaces that we encounter several times per day, cleaning products often contain preservatives (such as formaldehyde and sodium benzoate). The cleaning products used in a home can be isolated to a single room (such as bathroom toilet cleaner) to the entire house (a multipurpose cleaner).

  • Chemicals. Preservatives can cause short-term and long-term health conditions. They have been linked to cancer, behavior disorders, menstrual cycle disruption, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and skin.
  • Tips. Use cleaning products made from natural ingredients—such as vinegar, water, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and castile soap. Instead of buying pre-mixed cleaners, make your own!

Air Fresheners

Air fresheners typically contain synthetic fragrances, which are made from any number of chemicals. Inerts are one type of chemical that can be found in synthetic fragrances. The word “inert” means “lacking a usual or anticipated chemical or biological action”(4), giving the impression that these chemicals are not harmful. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

  • Chemicals. Inerts have not been studied for their health effects. However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency allows 1,400 chemicals to be called inert, 40 of which are known to cause cancer or nervous system toxicity, and another 64 of which are potentially toxic.
  • Tips. Instead of standard air fresheners, use organic essential oils that are made from natural sources instead of synthetic chemicals. Simmering water on the stove, and adding lemon, cinnamon or other spice is another healthier alternative to synthetic air fresheners.

Chemicals are found throughout our homes. The 10 chemicals identified above are categories that are commonly found in households. Make changes room-by-room to rid these common household chemicals and unburden your body.

Mattress Disposal and Recycling

by Lindsay S @ Choose Mattress

With all the millions of mattresses being sold annually worldwide it’s wonder where all of these used mattresses cease to be worthy at the end of their life cycle. I used to have an image of huge refuse sites with stacks of rubbish and piles of mattresses. In the US, this is no longer the case as it was some decades ago. However, in many places across the world, a landfill site is certainly where old mattresses still do tend to expire, piled high in corners of tips where they take up space and cause unnecessary harm to the environment.

One of the many common attributes you will see listed when reading through any mattress reviews or specifications is not just the name, brand, or material, but also the stated mattress thickness, which is sometimes specified as its height. Many people may mistakenly believe that the different mattress sizes correlate to their height, but this isn’t necessarily true – you can get thick Twin and thin Queen, and vice versa. In this article we touch a little more briefly upon size. Why Mattress Height Matters Mattress height plays a large role in how the bed appears in the room. Will

Tempur-Pedic Alternatives In 2018

by Lindsay S @ Choose Mattress

While you may or may not love your bed, ask yourself – how comfortable are you while sleeping on it? Replacing your decade old mattress can help you sleep comfortably, but choosing the best mattress isn’t always as simple as one may think. For example, brands and types are abundant, and budgets range from cheap to very expensive, so scrimping could be detrimental to health, whilst overpaying could be pointless. If you’ve chosen the wrong mattress for yourself in terms of comfort, you’d most likely end up having a tough time sleeping and eventually suffer from sleep deprivation. Comfort aside,

It’s important to note that the most common sleep disorders doesn’t necessarily mean lack of sleep, it can also mean too much of it, or alternatively could be neither, but instead something that occurs during slumber that isn’t classed as a normal sleeping habit such as excessive snoring. Broadly speaking, these types of disorders occur in the form of compromised rejuvenation, and will eventually compromise the overall well-being and health

Nontoxic Window Curtains: Tips to find the best ones for your home

by @ Sophia Ruan Gushee | Detox Your Homes | Toxin Free Living

by Angela Cummings and Sophia Ruan Gushée

When detoxing the home, details—such as the materials and maintenance of curtains—can impact your health.

Similar to table runners, furniture fabrics, bathroom towels and other types of textiles, curtains can be made from natural materials or synthetic chemicals. Curtains made from natural materials are healthier since they contain fewer chemicals.

Healthier textiles are made from natural sources, like plants and even animals. Examples include cotton, hemp, wool, bamboo, and silk.

Nontoxic Window Curtains

To select nontoxic window curtains, we should assess the textiles, dyes, and fabric finishes. Chemicals often found in each of these components include chlorine, formaldehyde, pesticides, and PFCs. They may contribute to health issues, like asthma and cancer.

Below are tips for choosing natural materials, dyes and finishes.

MATERIALS

  • Cotton. Made from cottonseed, cotton is a popular and affordable nontoxic curtain material. Buying conventional cotton contributes to practices that pollute our environment with pesticides. These pesticides are absorbed by the cotton plant and cottonseed that are used to make cotton fabrics. There is conflicting evidence as to how much pesticide remains in cotton fabric and whether that amount is significant enough to threaten human health. I think it's hard to generalize since cotton is grown and manufactured from such diverse practices that it's safer to buy organic cotton for items that have frequent contact with your skin (like pajamas).
  • Organic Cotton. Organic cotton is grown without pesticides. It is considered one of the least toxic materials. Organic cotton curtains are getting easier to find and are carried by several popular mainstream stores.
  • Silk. Silk is the fiber that the silkworm weaves for its cocoon. Silk curtains can dress up a room, giving a shimmery look without added chemicals.
  • Linen. Made from the flax plant, linen is sometimes used to make sheer curtains that give privacy while allowing the sunlight to shine through.

DYES

Naturally-colored materials can be labeled as “color grown,” or list the dye source as clay, spices, nuts, roots, tree bark, and plant parts.(1) Dyes labeled as “low-impact dye” are made from synthetic materials (chemicals), but are considered by some to be better than standard dyes. There are varying views about low-impact dyes and their effect on health.

FINISHES

Curtains come with a variety of finishes that may or may not be listed on the label. If you see words like “easy care,” “protected,” or “wrinkle-resistant,” there may be chemical finishes added. Avoid curtains that contain finishes.

3RD PARTY CERTIFICATIONS

Opt for window curtains that have been certified by a credible third-party. Here are a few to look for:

  • GOTS Certified as “organic.” The GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) considers the material fiber, dye, finish, added notions (buttons, zippers, etc), tag, and packaging material when certifying textiles. Look for the GOTS organic certification for products that are 95-100 percent organic. Be aware that GOTS also has a certification for products “made with organic,” which allow for 30 percent of materials to be non-organic. However, these products must state “made with” instead of solely stating “organic”. (2)
  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This is a certification accepted and used worldwide. Material fiber, dye, finish, and notions are considered when certifying textiles. There are four classifications with varying criteria for certification. Curtains fall into Product Class IV, which has less strict requirements than Product Class I.(3)
  • USDA Organic. The U.S. Department of Agriculture certifies raw natural fibers (cotton, wool, flax). USDA organic certification only considers the fiber; it does not consider dye, finish, or notions. (4)

Maintenance

In addition to choosing nontoxic curtains, maintenance and cleaning of curtains can help create a healthier home.

Curtains attract dust, mold, and chemicals that are floating in the air. Dust contains dead cells, bug parts, mold spores, pet dander, and particles from clothing, curtains, furniture, and other household products. In addition, chemicals such as flame retardants and SVOCs, absorb onto (attach reversibly to, without bonding) (5) indoor surfaces such as dust.

Below are three curtain maintenance tips to help detox your home.

  1. House dust has been found to cause allergy (6) and asthma reactions.(7) Vacuuming (with a HEPA filter) your home and curtains often is one strategy for controlling allergy and asthma.
  2. Buy curtains you can wash easily. Wash curtains every week to two weeks in order to keep dust to a minimum.
  3. Avoid “dry clean only” curtains. The dry cleaning solution is a mix of chemicals that may be causing health conditions, including asthma. (8)

Summary

Replacing synthetic curtains with natural curtains is one way of detoxing your living room, playroom, bedroom, and kitchen curtains. In summary:

  1. Consider choosing curtains made from natural materials, natural dyes and those that do not have added finishes.
  2. Choose curtains that are washable to easily clean them weekly or bi-weekly in the washing machine instead of having them dry cleaned.

Strategies for Reducing New Carpet Odor

by @ Sophia Ruan Gushee | Detox Your Homes | Toxin Free Living

by Angela Cummings and Sophia Ruan Gushée

I was in junior high when my parents last installed new carpet. Well, at least, that was the last time I lived there. My sisters and I were on summer break, and so excited to get rid of the worn out carpeting that the previous owners had left behind.

Giddy with excitement, the three of us sat on the couch outside of the living room, watching the installers lay carpet and secure it with tack strips. After a short time, we retreated upstairs. I remember feeling dizzy and nauseous as we left our post.

That was quite some time ago.

Even after all these years, I vividly remember that new carpet smell.  It was so potent.

What I didn’t know back then is that the ‘new carpet smell’ was created by chemicals off-gassing into the air.

Chemicals found in carpet.

Standard carpeting is made from synthetic fibers, dyes, and finishes. Chemicals that are commonly used to make and/or protect carpeting include:

  • PBDEs
  • PFCs
  • Flame Retardants
  • Preservatives such as formaldehyde and sodium benzoate
  • Solvents including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • Surfactants/Sulfates

In addition, when chemicals mix, they may produce other toxic fumes that could be harmful to health. This is known as the chemical cocktail effect.  As an example, think of bleach and ammonia. When chlorine bleach is mixed with ammonia, it creates additional toxic gases called chloramines. (1)

These types of chemicals can also be found in the foam padding under carpeting, as well as in the adhesives during installation.

How do you get rid of new carpet fumes?

Getting rid of new carpet fumes can take some time, but planning in advance helps. Below are three tips.

1. Don’t bring them home.

The most effective way to have less carpet odor in the home is to not bring them home. Carpets and padding made from natural materials—such as organic wool or cotton—typically has fewer chemicals than synthetic carpeting and padding, which is made from several chemicals.  When installing carpeting, consider non-adhesive installation methods where possible. If adhesives are needed, choose adhesives that are lower in VOCs.

2. Air purifiers with carbon filters.

Investing in an air purifier may reduce the amount of new carpet fumes circulating in the home. Air purifiers come in many variations. Opt for one that has a carbon filter or “activated charcoal.” Please know the type of charcoal we’re talking about here is not the same as the charcoal used to grill. It’s a special type of charcoal (or carbon filter) meant to remove chemicals from the air.

3. Fresh air circulation.

Increase the amount of fresh air in the house. Open windows and larger doors such as a patio door to let the fresh air in. If possible, get a cross breeze by opening windows and doors opposite of each other to increase circulation. Turning on a fan will help circulate the fresh air as well.

The popular new carpet smell is familiar to anyone that has had new standard carpet installed. The smell can be stuck in memory for decades to come, and the health effects may stick around as well.

Consider installing solid surface flooring—such as tile or solid hardwood flooring—with area rugs instead of a fully carpeted floor. If carpet is non-negotiable, consider natural carpets with fewer VOCs, and padding made from natural materials, like cotton. Use installation methods that don’t require adhesives, if possible. If adhesives are required, choose those with fewer VOCs and overall fewer chemicals.

Natural Air Fresheners

by @ Sophia Ruan Gushee | Detox Your Homes | Toxin Free Living

Air fresheners have popped up everywhere—in home kitchens, personal vehicles, restaurant bathrooms, hotel lobbies, taxi cabs, and retail clothing stores.

Why are they used so frequently? To mask odors, or to enhance ambiance.

These air fresheners come as sprays and aerosols, plug-ins, scented candles, gels, reed defuses, potpourri, scented paper, and essential oils.

While noses may enjoy the scent, bodies may not.

Health Effects

Standard air fresheners are made from a mix of chemicals that may harm our bodies. That chemical cocktail usually includes one (or more) of these ingredients:

  • Phthalates. Phthalates help fragrances last longer. However, they may also contribute to hormone disruption, liver and kidney abnormalities, cancer, birth defects, infertility, obesity, endometriosis, development abnormalities, allergies, and asthma.(1)
  • Solvents. Solvents can enhance a product's performance (like paint), prevent clumping, and dry quickly. They may also be toxic to the nervous system; damage the liver, kidneys and reproductive system; and contribute to cancer and dermatitis.(2)
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs also serve a purpose, like help paints dry more quickly. Health effects from VOCs can be short- and/or long-term, ranging from dizziness and headaches to liver and kidney damage.(3)

Natural Air Fresheners

Consider freshening air without the synthetic chemicals! Before purchasing (or making) an air freshener, identify the purpose: Is it to mask odor, or to enhance ambiance?

Addressing Odors

Remove offending odors. For example, if the kitchen garbage can smells like rotten food, then wash the garbage can with nontoxic soap and warm water to remove the rotting food particles that may be stuck to the can.

Or, if laundry is the offender, wash offensive smelling laundry with nontoxic, fragrance-free soap and baking soda; and rinse with vinegar to remove bacterial-causing odors. For fragrance, you can store the clean clothes near a diffuser of essential oils, or spray clean laundry with diluted 100% pure essential oils.

Enhancing Ambiance

Freshening air for ambiance can be achieved with natural ingredients! Look for air fresheners that are made from all-natural ingredients, such as baking soda, 100% pure essential oils (vs. synthetic essential oils), and natural citrus (such as orange or lemon).

Making Your Own Air Fresheners

Air fresheners can be made using ingredients found in most homes. The DIY solutions below are easy, and can be created within minutes.

  • Scented Simmer. In a small pot, add water, citrus peel, cinnamon, clove, herbs, or flower petals. Simmer on low heat(4). Done! Relax and enjoy the smell.
  • Smudging. Increasingly, people are "smudging," or clearing energy at home by burning sage (with windows open), Palo Santo, or even cinnamon.
  • Vinegar Bowl. Fill a small bowl with vinegar, and place it in the area that has an undesirable smell. That’s it! The smell of vinegar will dissipate. If there is a smelly spot that needs cleaning, use vinegar and water solution to wipe it up.(5)
  • Baking Soda Jar. Leaving baking soda in a box might be effective in absorbing odors, but the box gives an undesirable look. Instead, pour baking soda into a colored Mason jar or decorative container. Leave the lid off so that the baking soda can best absorb the odors.(6)
  • Good Old Fashion Fresh Air. Open windows to air out odors. Fresh air, especially with a cross-breeze, helps dilute odors, blowing the ‘stinky air’ outside. Plus, it doesn’t cost a thing!(7)

In Summary

Whether you’re masking odors, or adding scent for ambiance, consider choosing air fresheners made of all-natural ingredients.

  1. Remove sources of odor by cleaning them with natural cleaners, or eliminating them from the home completely.
  2. Use ingredients that Mother Nature creates, such as water, citrus, spices, herbs, and flower petals.
  3. Consider vinegar, baking soda, and opening windows.

Choose ingredients that your nose and body both enjoy!

Do You Have Indoor Allergies?

by @ Sophia Ruan Gushee | Detox Your Homes | Toxin Free Living

by Angela Cummings and Sophia Ruan Gushée

Do you sometimes come home after being out of the house all day and experience chronic symptoms: scratchy throat, headache, itchy eyes, or stuffy nose? Could it be an allergic reaction to your indoor environment?

According to the Center for Disease Control, “More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year.”(1) Allergies can lead to a chronic illness, which becomes costly. The Center for Disease Control estimates that “Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. with an annual cost in excess of $18 billion.”(2)

Indoor Allergy Symptoms

Indoor allergies can be hard to distinguish from an illness. For example, allergies and the typical cold or flu share symptoms: fatigue, nasal congestion, headache, fever, and cough. Below explores a few differences though.

Allergies

Allergic reactions involve the “release of IgE (immunoglobulin E) antibodies, histamine, and other chemicals [released by] the immune system.”(3)

Symptoms that are different from a cold or flu are:(4)

  • wheezing
  • shortness of breath
  • rash
  • nausea
  • vomiting

Sometimes the chronic condition, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), can be confused with allergic reactions since they, too, share similar symptoms. However, since MCS does not involve the release of IgE antibodies or histamines, it is not considered an allergic reaction.(5)

Cold/Flu

Symptoms that are different from allergies are:(6)

  • sore throat
  • muscle or body aches
  • discolored mucus (yellow or green)

4 Typical Indoor Allergy Causes

1. Dust

Household dust is made up of particles that fall off of pets, people, and objects. It includes pet dander, bug parts, dead skin cells (from you and me), clothing lint, mold spores, bath towel fuzz, plastic bits from computers and electronics, and chemicals that comprise our household items (e.g. pesticides on fur, chemical cleaners, and fire retardants in electronics).

2. Chemicals

Chemicals in phthalates, surfactants/sulfates and VOCs may cause or trigger allergic reactions.(7) Examples of how these chemicals enter our home include:

  • Phthalates: caulk, plastic food containers, pesticides, textiles, upholstery, and children’s toys
  • Surfactants/sulfates: adhesives used in furniture, leather, paints, and textiles
  • VOCs: candles, synthetic essential oils, cleaning products, air fresheners, composite wood, furniture, and flooring

3. Mold

Mold is found indoors and outdoors in various amounts. It can enter your house from open windows and doors, heating and cooling systems, and be tracked in on clothing, shoes, pets, and people.(8)

4. Dust mites

Dust mites are tiny little arthropods that are similar to spiders. They eat the dried skin that humans shed every day. People can be allergic to the dust mite, their waste, and their deceased bodies, all of which can be found in couches, carpeting, dust, stuffed toys, pillows,, and bedding.(9)

Do You Have Indoor Allergies?

Indoor allergies can be diagnosed in two primary ways: by allergy testing, or by paying attention to patterns.

Allergy Testing

Allergists can test for reactions to pet dander, mold, dust mites and even some chemicals (like formaldehyde). The testing is typically done one of two ways: skin test and blood test.

  • Skin test: The skin test is the most common allergy test used. It’s relatively painless, affordable, and shows results in 20 minutes.(10)
  • Blood test: The blood test requires drawing and analyzing blood. It takes longer to get results.(11)

Patterns

There are typically patterns that develop with allergic reactions. For example, when you pet an animal your nose gets stuffy. Or when you spend time in your house during nights and weekends, you have a frequent headaches. These patterns could hint at allergy triggers.

3 Tips for Indoor Allergies

You can follow these general guidelines when considering how to reduce indoor allergens. However, start with your trusted medical professional, who can provide individualized health care that takes your entire health (history, current illnesses, specific symptoms, etc) into consideration.

1. Consult an Allergist and/or Environmental Medicine Doctor

Indoor allergies can be caused by a combination of factors. Traditional allergists consider factors such as dust, dust mites, pets whereas traditional Environmental Medicine professionals consider the “clinical aspects of humans and their environment.”(12) The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (https://www.aaemonline.org/aboutus.php) is one tool available to find physicians and other environmental medicine professionals.

2. Avoid allergens

The most effective way to stop allergic reactions without medication is to avoid the allergen. For example, if flowers are causing an allergic reaction, avoid bringing fresh flowers into the house. Similarly, if chemicals are causing an allergic reaction, avoid buying products such as air fresheners, paints and finishes with high amounts of VOCs, synthetic materials, and other chemicals that could be harmful to health.

3. Control the indoor environment

Keep your house dusted and cleaned to help reduce allergy triggers such as mold, dust, dust mites, and chemicals that can stick to dust, clothes, drapes, furniture, bedding and other materials. Fully clean your home with a HEPA vacuum or damp rag at least once per week to minimize dust.
