Sleep and the Immune System

by Mattress One @ Mattress One Blog - Mattress Information & Tips

A Good Night’s Sleep Can Keep the Doctor Away!

Now that cold and flu season is officially upon us, we’re all thinking of ways we can avoid succumbing to the latest bug making the rounds. Of course, eating healthy meals, washing your hands, and getting your flu shot are all great places to start. But did you know that getting plenty of sleep can also help you stay healthy all season long – indeed, all year long?

It’s true! Sleep is immensely important to virtually all bodily systems, and the immune system is no exception. Getting enough sleep is a simple but powerful way to keep your immune system in top form, allowing you to spend more time doing the things you love to do.

Here are just a few ways that the amount of sleep you get affects your immune system.

Lack of sleep depresses the immune system.

It’s true that the immune system is complex, with multiple moving parts. But one thing scientists have observed in multiple studies is that when a person is sleep deprived, the number of T-cells in their bloodstream goes down. T-cells are the white blood cells that seek out and destroy bacteria and viruses. When you have fewer T-cells, your immune system can’t respond as well to the germs that sneak past the body’s other defenses.

In addition to this, another type of cell, inflammatory cytokines, increase in number when a person doesn’t get enough sleep. An increase in inflammation can lead to certain kinds of tissue damage. This combines with the lack of T-cells to make a person more susceptible to coming down with any number of diseases, including colds and the flu.

Not sleeping well can reduce fever response.

Of course, nobody wants to experience a fever. It’s uncomfortable and generally miserable. But here’s the thing: fevers are the body’s way of fighting off an infection, turning up the heat to slowly let the germs cook. Many parents who have sat up with a sick child have noticed that fevers tend to go up at night. This is a good thing! The body is taking advantage of the time when a person is at rest to go about the business of fighting off an infection.

Because of this, if you do get sick, it’s especially important to get plenty of sleep. Sleeping well will help your body to fight off the infection, allowing you to bounce back faster.

There’s no need to get extra sleep to help your immune system.

If you’re already sleeping the right amount of time (seven to nine hours for adults, nine to eleven hours for teens), you’re good to go. As with so many other things in life, boosting your immune system through sleep is all about balance. You don’t have to go overboard; you just have to develop healthy habits.

And if you’re generally short of sleep? Fall is a great time to get back on a regular sleep schedule. After all, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. You might as well use that increased darkness to get some shut-eye.

Of course, if it’s your mattress that’s holding you back from getting a good night’s sleep, know that your friends here at Mattress One are here to help. We can make sure that you have the right mattress for your sleep style and comfort level. Stop by today to find the right mattress for you!

Sleep and the Muscles

by Mattress One @ Mattress One Blog - Mattress Information & Tips

Why a Good Night's Rest Makes Such a Difference for Your Muscles

Let’s admit it: when you think of sleep and your muscles, you’re probably thinking about how you work hard during the day and feel fine, but tired, when you crash into bed at night. Then, when you wake up the next morning, your muscles are protesting everything you put them through the day before.

It’s true that muscle pain in the morning can be common, but that’s no reason to skimp on getting enough sleep – especially after a long, hard day. Whatever temporary pain you might face pales in comparison to the benefits you’ll get when you stick to a consistent sleep schedule night after night. Don’t believe us? Here are just a few ways getting a good night’s sleep helps your muscles.

Your muscles completely relax during sleep.

During your non-rapid eye movement sleep, your muscles relax, and when your sleep schedule moves to rapid eye movement sleep, your muscles go atonic. This is complete relaxation and lack of muscle tone similar to paralysis. (The exceptions to this are your diaphragm, which controls your breathing, and your eye muscles.) There’s a good reason for this atonia: if your muscles aren’t moving, you won’t move in potentially dangerous ways, like falling off the bed. Your chances of disturbing your partner are also much reduced.

Your muscles recover and regenerate when you sleep.

You might be asleep, but your body is very busy while you’re catching those z’s. Your body will naturally secrete growth hormones as you sleep. This lets your cells go to work, repairing and regenerating portions of your muscles that were strained and injured during the day. A good night’s sleep might not cure everything, but it can certainly give your body the time it needs to cure itself.

Your body uses nutrients more efficiently when you sleep.

Trying to build muscle mass? In addition to training and eating a healthy diet, make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep at night. Sleep is the time when your body can put all the nutrients you absorbed during the day to work. Because your body is completely relaxed, the nutrients can now be used to repair and build muscle mass. It’s a great way to complement your training during the day, and the best part is, you don’t have to do anything!

When you sleep, your brain recharges.

In order to meet just about any health goal, the first organ you have to pay attention to is your brain. So whether you’re actively building muscle or just trying to stay healthy and active, sleep’s recharging effect on the brain is paramount. The more alert you are, the easier you’ll find it to put in those extra reps, go for that run, or lug that box of books up the stairs.

Given how essential sleep is to building muscle and keeping your body fit and strong, it just makes sense to make sure that your mattress isn’t working against you when you try to sleep. If your mattress is lumpy, squeaky, or poking you in all the wrong places, then it’s time for a new one! We here at Mattress One would love to help you find the perfect mattress to help you meet your health goals. Visit us today to find your next mattress!

Putting Disclosures to the Test - A public workshop

by FTC @ Blog - bedfax

EVENT DESCRIPTION

The Federal Trade Commission will host a public workshop in Washington, DC on September 15, 2016 to examine the testing and evaluation of disclosures that companies make to consumers about advertising claims, privacy practices, and other information.

Effective disclosures are critical in helping consumers make informed decisions in the marketplace.

  • Many advertisers have used disclosures in an attempt to prevent their advertisements from being deceptive. Disclosures must be crafted with care both with respect to their language and presentation. Disclosures used in the marketplace are sometimes ineffective.  Commission staff has recommended that disclosures be tested for effectiveness.
  • Disclosures are also challenging in the privacy arena, whether disclosing to consumers that their physical location or online interactions are being tracked, or explaining privacy practices when consumers sign up for a service. Privacy policies are often long and difficult to comprehend and privacy-related icons may fail to communicate information meaningfully to consumers. Furthermore, the accompanying mechanisms for consumers to provide informed consent or exercise choices about the use of their data may also be confusing. The Commission has long encouraged the development and testing of shorter, clearer, easier-to-use privacy disclosures and consent mechanisms.
  • The FTC has issued guides to help businesses avoid deceptive claims, such as guidance related to endorsements, environmental claims, fuel economy advertising, and the jewelry industry. Often the guidance presents options for qualifying claims to avoid deception. In developing guides, the Commission has sometimes relied on consumer research to gauge whether specific disclosures can be used to qualify otherwise misleading claims.

The FTC has a long commitment to understanding and testing the effectiveness of consumer disclosure, and is especially interested in learning about the costs and benefits of disclosure testing methods in the digital age.  A number of factors impact the effectiveness of disclosures, including whether they contain the most essential information and consumers notice them, direct their attention towards them, comprehend them, and are able to use that information in their decision making.  Some testing methods are more appropriate than others for evaluating these factors.

The workshop is aimed at encouraging and improving the evaluation and testing of disclosures by industry, academics, and the FTC.  The FTC’s workshop will explore how to test the effectiveness of these disclosures to ensure consumers notice them, understand them and can use them in their decision-making.   It is intended to further the understanding of testing and evaluation of both offline and online consumer disclosures, including those delivered through icons, product labels, short text, long text, audio or video messages, interactive tools, and other media. Topics may include evaluation criteria, testing methodologies and best practices, case studies, and lessons learned from such testing.

An agenda will be available prior to the event. No registration is necessary to attend. The workshop will be webcast and a link will be available here on the day of the event.

SSA Has Revised Its Vision, Mission, Elected New Officers and Board Members, Two New Websites, the BEDFAX® Program and Created a New SSA Logo

by Dale T. Read @ Blog - bedfax

After two years of working-committee meetings and SSA Board of Directors meetings, the Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) has completed the non-profit industry group’s updated vision and mission statements; elected new officers; created an expanded board; introduced two new websites (www.sleepinformation.org and www.bedfax.org ); introduced the final, restructured BEDFAX® consumer disclosure contents label program and promulgated the new SSA logofor membership and marketing purposes at the Las Vegas Summer 2016 market.
Starting with a meeting held in the snow in Boulder, Colorado in the early spring of 2014, over a period of two years the SSA redefined its overall vision for the future and its mission (see below) , and then set about restructuring the governing board, the association’s websites, its consumer transparency labeling program and concluded this fundamental phase of the change process with the introduction of the new clean, crisp and modern SSA logo (see attached). “It took us two plus years,” says SSA President Dale T. Read; “however, this focused non-profit industry association has emerged with new board members and officers, new vitality and energy, new websites, a renewed message and a new look and feel with both the BEDFAX® program and the SSA logo.”

MISSION STATEMENT
“To serve sleep innovators, both manufacturing and retail, by promoting members, product transparency, and education.”

Vision
SSA’s vision is to be a trusted authority for consumers on product transparency and education for specialty sleep products.

“Our re-focus with the updated mission statement,” says Read, “puts us back center stage in the business of advocacy for innovators and emerging companies in the specialty sleep field. If you look at our SSA Showroom in Las Vegas, where we have over 30 manufacturing exhibitors, you will see innovative, cutting edge products offered by emerging companies. These innovators offer the industry new types of foams, suspension systems, biometric monitoring and measurement systems, organic materials, new designs, accessories for heating and cooling,  power and electronics, as well as top-of-bed, under-the-bed andfashion accessories to name a few of the product categories,” says Read. “For over two decades we have been an advocate or a host for emerging specialty sleep companies offering new products to the retail marketplace. Many of the larger, well known mattress/ bedding exhibitors in Las Vegas today started out with the SSA over 20 years ago on our show floors in Orlando, San Francisco or Las Vegas. Both returning and new companies approach us for every market, and we are pleased to serve the vital role as an advocate and a sponsor for these emerging companies,” states Read.

“We should also note because of this vital service, which we offer specialty sleep and accessories manufacturers and the attending retailers of all types and sizes, we have sold out our show space for the past several years.  Since the time following the Recession in 2010, we at the SSA have experienced a strong rejuvenation, and financial solvency that allows us to carry out our multi-faceted mission focused around advocacy and retailer education of innovative sleep products.”

News Leadership and the Next Horizon

This past summer in Las Vegas, the SSA elected three new officers to govern the board and added two new members to the SSA board.  Angela Owen, CEO and Owner of Colorado based Suite Sleep was elected to serve as Chairman of the Specialty Sleep Association. Owen, who has more than fifteen years of experience in the sustainable bedding industry, sees her leadership as a bold challenge to try to change the industry’s “smoke and mirrors” sales tactics to clear and transparent product labeling. “As the new chairperson of the SSA, I see two distinct challenges ahead,” states Owen, “First, we need to redirect our education and appeal for the BEDFAX®  transparency labeling program to retailers and consumers, as opposed to just manufacturers. Secondly, we are going to explore added-value for SSA members to encourage growth and expansion of our membership including specialty sleep retailers, manufacturers and industry suppliers,” says Owen.

Sarah Bergman, who is Vice President of Marketing & Creative for PureCare, who oversees the company’s brand development, design, social media, PR, marketing and retail enhancements ( POP,etc.) was elected to serve as Vice Chairman of the SSA. At the same meeting, Pascal Roberge, Director of Sales for Beaudoin, a leader in bed frames, support systems and upholstered beds was elected to serve as the SSA Secretary / Treasurer. Among other duties, Roberge will be focused on developing SSA-sponsored research and marketing advocacy for the expanding under-the-bed, frame and support category.  Dale Read and Tambra Jones were also re-appointed to serve respectively as President and Executive Director of the SSA.

In addition to the three newly elected officers, the SSA board also elected two new members to the board expanding it to a total of ten voting members.

With the goal of increasing and strengthening retailer representation on the SSA board, the board has elected specialty sleep veteran Brian Davis, General Manager of the Saint Louis, MO-based Bedroom Store with 15 locations in the Midwest. Davis’s long affiliation with specialty sleep guru and former President of the SSA Denny Boyd helps re-focus the SSA in its mission to address specialty sleep issues at the retail level. Davis will serve for three years on the board. At the same time, looking for new blood and an international perspective, the board elected Thomas Frismodt, CEO of US-based Danican, an innovative and growing specialty sleep company, to a three-year term. Frismodt has blazed a trail of marketing and product achievements at companies in Denmark, Sweden and now in North and South America. Frismodt’s company brings a new, expanding and modern touch to the SSA showroom C-1565 at the World Market Center, Las Vegas.

The unveiling or introduction of the new SSA Logo was the final act or icing on the new cake for the SSA. The logo was developed by a branding committee consisting of Sarah Bergman, Mark Miller, Angela Owen and Tambra Jones. “We are pleased to introduce this new, clean, contemporary and stylish logo: one that fulfills our vision, mission and our future plans. Addressing organic claims on non-agricultural products

by OTA - Organic Trade Association @ Blog - bedfax

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released a study on consumer perceptions of organic claims,  and announced it will host a roundtable discussion with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., on October 20 to help the two agencies better understand how consumers perceive “organic” claims made on non-agricultural products such as personal care products and textiles. The roundtable is open to the public, and FTC welcomes written comments, including further evidence of consumer perceptions. The comment period for written comments will remain open until December 1. This action comes as a result of the Organic Trade Association (OTA) participating in numerous meetings with FTC and the National Organic Program, and submitting extensive comments urging FTC to exercise its consumer protection authority and take action against the fraudulent and misleading use of the term “organic” on products that fall outside of NOP’s scope of authority (such as shampoo, t-shirts, mattresses, household cleaners). OTA will attend the roundtable event and submit comments. OTA is in the initial stages of reviewing the study, and will convene a task force to help shape comments on how to best address consumer deception and education. Interested in learning more, or in participating in a task force? Contact Gwendolyn Wyard, OTA’s Vice President of Regulatory and Technical Affairs.

What Is Sleep?

by Mattress One @ Mattress One Blog - Mattress Information & Tips

What Are You Doing When You Catch Some Z's?

Have you ever really sat down and thought about what sleep actually is?

Most people haven't. They certainly know when they haven't had enough sleep, and most people have a decent idea of how much sleep they need to function. Beyond that, it's simply a fact of life. You turn the lights down, snuggle under the covers, close your eyes, and off you go.

But although sleep might seem simple, it's a complex biological process that is absolutely necessary for life. To help you learn more, we've put together this quick primer on what sleep is and why you need it so much.

What Sleep Is

You might think that sleep is a passive, dormant state – when your brain shuts down (or goes into sleep mode!) and only those bodily functions that are necessary for life continue to happen. This actually isn't the case. When you sleep, your brain, eyes, and some muscles can be very active.

Sleep happens when certain neurotransmitters in the brain signal that it's time to fall asleep. Once you lie down and turn off the light, your body goes through several sleep stages. Stage 1 is the lightest sleep, characterized by drifting in and out of sleep, slow eye movement, and some muscle activity. Stage 2 sleep is deeper. Eye movement stops, and brain wave activity slows. Once you move into stage 3 sleep, your brain starts to give off delta waves (extremely slow brain waves), and in stage 4, your brain gives off delta waves exclusively. Stages 3 and 4 together are known as deep sleep. After you've moved through stage 4, you might slip into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. This is when dreaming occurs.

A full sleep cycle will last anywhere from 90 to 110 minutes, which is obviously less than a full night's sleep. You go through a few sleep cycles each night, with the length of each stage varying depending on the time of night. Most deep sleep occurs earlier in the night. By morning, you should be spending all your time in stage 1, stage 2, and REM sleep – which is what leads to those strange dreams we all have when we wake up!

Why Sleep Is Important

Put simply, sleep is necessary for life. All animals with complex brains do it, and missing sleep can be deadly. In fact, scientists studying rats have found that complete sleep deprivation can kill rats in as little as 3 weeks (as opposed to their normal lifespan of 2-3 years). Even just depriving rats of REM sleep can lead to death in 5 weeks.

In humans, missing sleep can result in all kinds of negative consequences. We've already talked about the signs of sleep deprivation in a previous post, but here's a quick review: Losing sleep can lead to weight gain, depression, increased risk-taking behavior, skin breakouts, and a depressed immune system.

With all of that in mind, you can see why it's best to put the coffee down, turn off the TV, and grab some shut-eye when you can!

How We Can Help

Since sleep is so important, it's extra important to make sure you have a mattress that allows you to get the most restful sleep possible. If your current mattress isn't doing the job, come to Mattress One to find a new one! We'll make sure you go home with the best mattress for your needs, at a price that fits your budget. FTC to mattress companies: Don't pad your green claims

by FTC @ Blog - bedfax

If you or your clients make environmental marketing claims, don’t sleep on three actions the FTC just announcedagainst companies that sell mattresses.  What's more, the pleadings in one case offer insights into a course of conduct advertisers should avoid in the use of seals and certifications.

According the FTC’s lawsuit against Relief-Mart, based in Westlake Village, California, the company advertised its Biogreen memory foam mattresses without having its claims tucked in.  Relief-Mart, which markets through its tempflow.com site, said the products don’t contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), have no VOC off-gassing, and don’t have the smell consumers often associate with memory foam.  One aroma the FTC detected from Relief-Mart’s representations was the whiff of deception, which is why the complaint charged that the company didn’t have a reasonable basis for its claims.

A second lawsuit challenged statements in ads by Quebec-based Essentia Natural Memory Foam Company, which has retail stores in six U.S. cities.  The FTC charged that Essentia didn’t have appropriate proof to back up claims that its mattresses are VOC-free, have “[n]o chemical off-gassing or odor,” and — unlike other memory foam mattresses that “can emit up to 61 chemicals” — are “free from all those harmful VOCs.”  In addition, the complaint disputes Essentia’s claims that its memory foam mattresses are chemical-free, contain no formaldehyde, don’t emit chemical fumes and odors, and are “made with 100% natural materials.”  The FTC also challenged the truthfulness of Essentia’s assurance that testing confirms that its memory foam mattresses are VOC- and formaldehyde-free.

(An aside about “smell” claims:  The FTC doesn’t normally challenge subjective representations like smell.  What’s different here is that consumers acting reasonably under the circumstances are likely to interpret a claim that a mattress doesn’t have that memory foam smell to mean that it’s VOC-free.)

In a third action, the FTC alleged that San Diego-based Ecobaby Organics short-sheeted the truth in how it marketed its latex mattresses.  Through its purerest.com site, Ecobaby touted its mattresses as “chemical free,” with no formaldehyde, toluene, benzene, VOCs, or toxic substances.  The company also said its products contained fewer contaminants and chemicals than competitors’ memory foam or latex mattresses and that it had sound testing to back up its chemical-, formaldehyde-, and VOC-free claims.  Not so, said the FTC, which alleged that Ecobaby didn’t have appropriate testing to support those statements.

What about the certification angle?  Ecobaby’s promotional materials prominently featured the seal of NAOMI, the National Association of Organic Mattress Industry.  The FTC says the ads conveyed to consumers that NAOMI was an independent certifying organization with appropriate expertise that grants its seal based on objective standards.  The truth, says the FTC, is that NAOMI is run by Ecobaby and is really an alter ego of the company.  Thus, the company awarded its own seal to its own products without applying objective standards, a practice that (surprise, surprise) ran afoul of Section 5.

Proposed settlements with the three companies should put misleading representations to rest.  You’ll want to read the orders for the details, but savvy green marketers will pay close attention to provisions addressing VOC-free claims.  The orders prohibit the companies from making VOC-free claims unless the emission level is zero micrograms per cubic meter or if they have competent and reliable scientific evidence that the products in question contain no more than a “trace level” of VOCs.  The “trace level” standard comes from the FTC's Green Guides’guidance on making “free of” claims.  As the Green Guides explain, companies meet the “trace level” test if:

  1. The level of the ingredient is less than what would be found as a background level in the ambient air;
  2. The presence of the ingredient doesn’t cause the harm consumers typically associate with it, including harm to the environment or health; and
  3. The ingredient hasn’t been intentionally added to the product.

The orders also bar a host of unsubstantiated environmental benefit or attribute claims and prohibit certain health claims without appropriate scientific evidence.

In addition, the settlements address particular forms of deception challenged in the individual complaints.  For example, the Essentia and Ecobaby settlements ban claims that products covered by the orders are “free of chemicals” and prohibits misrepresentations about tests, studies, or research.  The Essentia order bars unsubstantiated “natural” claims.   And under the Ecobaby settlement, the company can’t make “non-toxic” claims unless it has scientific evidence to back them up.  Addressing the deceptve use of the NAOMI seal, the Ecobaby order puts a provision in place to end misrepresentations about certifications.

You have until August 26, 2013, to file an online comment about the proposed Relief-MartEssentia, or Ecobaby Organics settlements.  Looking for more resources about keeping your green claims compliant?  Bookmark the BCP Business Center's Environmental Marketing page.  Today’s cases also offer a timely reminder to take a fresh look at the FTC’s revised Green Guides if you haven’t reviewed them recently.

Signs of Sleep Deprivation

by Mattress One @ Mattress One Blog - Mattress Information & Tips

How to Tell if You Aren't Getting Enough Sleep

The science is in – all adults should be getting seven to nine hours of sleep a night. But with our fast-paced lives, it's hard to carve out that much time to sleep every night. Plus, everybody is different. Even if you’re doing your best to follow the best health guidelines, how can you be certain if you’re getting enough sleep?

Luckily, our bodies have some great early-warning systems to help us know if we’re not getting enough sleep. If you notice any of the following symptoms in your daily life, make sure to rework your schedule to make getting more shut-eye a priority.

A quick caveat: pulling the occasional all-nighter to finish a project from work or to soothe a cranky toddler shouldn't have any long-term effects, even if you do feel miserable the next day. We're talking about prolonged lack of sleep here, which has been linked to consequences like cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression.

1. You're hungry all the time.

Your body has two main sources of energy: food and sleep. If you aren’t getting enough energy from one, your body will try to make it up with the other. So if you find yourself constantly reaching for that extra cupcake, it might be time to cut back on dessert and spend more time looking at the inside of your eyelids.

2. Your self-control is slipping.

Lacking sleep already makes you crave more food – especially sugary, fatty food that you should be eating sparingly. But you might find that you're becoming more impulsive and less inhibited in other ways. If you find that your temper is always close to fraying or that risky behaviors seem like a good idea, that’s a sign you should get more sleep.

3. You’re tripping, bumping into things, and acting like a klutz.

It's true that while some people are blessed with exceptional balance, others … aren't. But if you find that you’re suddenly tripping over every crack in the sidewalk and constantly bumping into things, you might simply be tired. Seemingly ordinary tasks like walking up a flight of stairs take a lot of neural processing and fine motor control. When you’re sleep deprived, you simply don’t have the energy to tackle those tasks the way you used to.

4. You’re constantly getting sick.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body has a significantly harder time fighting off infections. This means that diseases that your body might have been able to completely clear out without you experiencing any symptoms can now turn you into a sniffling, sneezing mess. Rest is one of the best cures for illness, so take this as your sign to get some shut-eye.

5. Your skin isn't looking as good as it should.

After all, there is a reason why it’s called "beauty sleep"! When you sleep, your body produces collagen, which keeps your skin plump and smooth. Lack of sleep can also result in to more estrogen circling through your system, which can lead to acne breakouts. So if your skin is acting like a teenager's or you notice more wrinkles than you should, it's time to reevaluate your sleep habits.

Of course, once you decide to get more sleep, you might find that it’s easier said than done – especially if your mattress is working against you. Luckily, the experts here at Mattress One have the right solution for your bedtime woes. Stop in today to shop our selection of high-quality mattresses. We’ll sure to find the right mattress to send you peacefully into dreamland in no time!

Buying a new mattress is a big decision. Whether you're looking for a mattress to last the next five years or the next 25, it's important to know the materials that go into the mattress you'll sleep on every night for as long as you own the mattress. If you spend an average of seven hours of sleep per night in bed, you'll be spending a lot of time with your new mattress over the next few years. It's a good idea to make sure you're making the right decision for your needs for sleep, health, and peace of mind. A natural latex mattress can do all of those things for you. Here's why. 100 Percent Pure Joma Wool Pure Joma wool is the fire retardant you'll find in a PlushBeds natural latex mattress. Most flame retardants used in mattresses today contain Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs). These chemicals are the same ones the UC Davis Health System found to be linked to social, behavioral, and learning deficits. Beyond food: Organic lifestyle brands star in pop-up event in New York -Organic Trade Association and sponsors present "Live Organic from Farm to Home"

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 5, 2017)—Organic is not just for eating anymore, and more than a dozen cutting-edge and innovative organic fashion and home textile brands are helping the Organic Trade Association (OTA) prove that point in an inspiring, educational and entertaining two-day pop-up event in the heart of Manhattan.

Presented by OTA and OTA's Fiber Council with the generous support of 24 outstanding sponsors, the specially designed pop-up venue – open to the public on Friday and Saturday, May 5 & 6, at the Treehaus organic café and food market -- showcases the latest in organic products for the home and for the closet.

The all-organic pop-up shop features organic cotton T-shirts and baby clothes, organic wool sweaters and socks, organic sheets and blankets, even organic mattresses. "Live Organic from Farm to Home" is connecting the dots between that organic T-shirt or sweater and the organic cotton farmer and the organic sheep raiser; between the organic mattress factory or an organic fabric dyeing factory and the downstream impact on our water and soil.

"At Timberland, we hold ourselves accountable for what goes into our products as well as how they're made, and we're constantly seeking innovative solutions to reduce their environmental impact," said Colleen Vien, Sustainability Director for outdoor lifestyle brand Timberland, one of the event's sponsors. "Conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides and requires significantly more water than organically grown cotton. As such, Timberland has had a longstanding goal of increasing our use of organic cotton year over year."

Kicking off #LiveOrganic was a VIP reception on Thursday evening. Media guests met and mingled with the leaders and pioneers of the organic textile industry, talked with the farmers who are committing their lives to growing organic fiber in the most environmentally sustainable way, and heard the unique stories of each of the sponsoring brands.

"We've worked diligently for 23 years to maintain our integrity as environmental stewards and to educate the consumer on the importance of using U.S. grown organic cotton. You care about what you put into your body ...you should care about what you put on your body as well," said Jimmy Wedel, an organic cotton farmer from the Texas High Plains and President of the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative (TOCMC) in Lubbock, Texas. TOCMC farmer members produce most of the organic cotton grown in this country. Wedel is a third generation farmer who farms over 4,000 areas, almost all certified organic.

Living an organic lifestyle

Today's consumer is embracing an organic food-to-fashion-and-home lifestyle. Organic food is now found in over 80 percent of American kitchens. And the American organic textile market is now a billion-dollar-plus market, posting robust double-digit growth in recent years. Organic fiber is in demand for everything from organic bath towels to baby clothes to high fashion. Consumers are increasingly looking for clean products without toxins, unnecessary ingredients, and which are produced in ways that do not harm the environment.

"Coyuchi knows how important organic fiber and sustainable practices are to our customers, so we've gone one step further," said Eileen Mockus, CEO of Coyuchi organic bedding company. "To extend the longevity of our organic cotton bedding and towels and ensure it won't end up in a landfill, we're created our new circular subscription service which lets you send back your linens and allows us to renew, upcycle, or recycle them."

More than 13 million tons of textiles end up in U.S. landfills, according to findings by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. But long before textiles reach the landfill, the production of conventional fiber is compromising the environment. Over thirty eight million pounds of pesticides were used on conventional cotton in 2014 in the U.S., making cotton third in terms of pesticide use after only corn and soybeans, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Sponsors of #LiveOrganic inspired the enthusiastic gathering on Thursday when they shared the mission of their companies and the passion for a clean world that created – and continues to create – their widening array of products.

"Responsible sourcing through environmentally and socially conscious practices, along with a commitment to transparency and community are important to everyone at Ramblers Way," said Nick Armentrout, Supply Chain Manager for sustainable and organic clothing maker Ramblers Way. "When Ramblers Way sources organic wool, we use the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) to help us assure environmental and social standards are followed from farm to fabric to fashion."

"From the field to your home, the Grund organic cotton bath rugs offer a chemical free option – no harmful pesticides and chemicals during production, harvesting and processing," said Michael Twer, Vice President, Sales/General Manager for organic bath maker Grund. "Each rug to towel is responsibly made to the absolute highest social and environmental standards, and the cotton used can be traced to the very community of cultivation."

"Naturepedic mattresses do not contain any polyurethane foam, formaldehyde, pesticides, GMOs, vinyl or any questionable materials," said Chris Robinson, Vice President, Sales & Marketing for Naturepedic organic mattress company. "Our mattresses are made without harmful chemicals of any kind, including flame retardant chemicals, or chemical flame barriers."

While the pop-up focuses on what we put on our body, the dots also connect organic cotton production to healthy organic food. Two-thirds of the harvested organic cotton crop is used in food and cattle feed. Organic cottonseed has been found to be a source of high nutrition, protein and energy in organic animal feed rations, and to boost milk production and butterfat in dairy cows. Cottonseed oil is one of the most widely used cooking oils, and organic cottonseed oil offers consumers the huge benefits of being produced from crops grown without pesticides and chemicals.

"Our company was founded on the belief that organic makes a difference for families, farming communities and the environment," said Mike Ferry, president of Horizon Organic dairy company. "That commitment remains true today, so we are proud to support organic throughout the supply chain, in the dairy industry and beyond, and are happy to sponsor the OTA's first Live Organic from Farm to Home Pop-Up Shop."

A healthier world for all, from farm to home

OTA's Organic Fiber Council was convened in 2015 with the goal to unite the organic fiber sector with a cohesive voice, identify the challenges and opportunities in the organic fiber sector, educate the consumer about the importance of organic fiber, and help move the sector forward.

"OTA and the Organic Fiber Council are thrilled to be telling the story of organic fiber and textiles, and to be showing the public in such a fun and engaging way why it truly makes a difference when you choose organic in every part of your life. And we're honored to be working with these industry pioneers – they're creating a healthier world for all of us," said Gwendolyn Wyard, Vice President of Regulatory and Technical Affairs for OTA and staff coordinator for the Organic Fiber Council.

The #LiveOrganic pop-up can be visited on May 5 and 6 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Treehaus MiMA, 470 West 42nd St.

The sponsoring organic fiber brands are Coyuchi, Dhana, Gallant, Grund, MetaWear, Naturepedic, Organic Cotton Plus, prAna, Ramblers Way, Spiritex, Synergy, Syona Home and Timberland. Sponsoring brands, farmers, organizations and retailers are Control Union, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Horizon Organic, OneCert, Oregon Tilth, MOM's Organic Market, Organic Valley, Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative, Textile Exchange, Whole Foods, and the Richard D. Siegel Law Offices.

SSA President Dale Read clarifies who can and cannot use the USDA-NOP Seal in their marketing

SSA President Dale Read clarifies who can and cannot use the USDA-NOP Seal in their marketing

by Tambra Jones @ Blog - bedfax

The following does not represent a legal opinion or a legal representation. This is merely a research report on links and materials readily available from USDA-NOP and the Organic Trade Association (OTA.)

Manufacturers of Finished Textile or “Fiber” Products May NOT Use the USDA-NOP Seal.

A question has arisen on a number of occasions with members of the Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) and other mattress, pillow and textile products manufacturers concerning the use of the USDA-NOP Seal with marketing tools, websites, signage and public relations.

The US Government USDA and the USDA-National Organic Program (NOP) receive their authority and financing through the Farm Bill. As a result the jurisdiction or authority to create standards and enforcement for the USDA-NOP are reserved for “agricultural crops or animals  and the farms, ranches and plantations where these agri-products are grown or raised, and in the case of food products, the subsequent processing. The farms are inspected and the agri-source receives the USDA-NOP certification and use of the seal. If you use cotton, wool, coir, hemp or other “organic” fibers, even if they originate on a farm or an agricultural site that has the USDA-NOP seal, the minute you handle, wash, comb, spin, weave or process the textile or create a finished textile or fiber product, you are not authorized to use that USDA-NOP seal. There are NO USDA-NOP mattresses, pillows, futons,  toppers, sheets, comforters, or other mattress and bedding products.

The labeling requirements of the NOP apply to raw, fresh products and processed products that contain organic agricultural ingredients. Agricultural products that are sold, labeled, or represented as organic must be produced and processed in accordance with the NOP standards. Except for operations whose gross income from organic sales totals $5,000 or less, farm and processing operations that grow and process organic agricultural products must be certified by USDA-accredited certifying agents.

https://www.ams.usda.gov/rules-regulations/organic/organic-seal

https://www.ams.usda.gov/sites/default/files/media/Using%20the%20Organic%20Seal%20Factsheet.pdf

Since then, the seal has become a highly sought-after labeling mark in the world of agricultural products and has appeared on millions of labels, advertisements, and marketing materials.

https://www.ams.usda.gov/sites/default/files/media/OrganicTextilePolicyMemo.pdf

Textile products that are labeled as “organic” must not:

•Use the USDA organic seal unless they are certified in accordance with the NOP regulations.

•Imply or lead the consumer to believe that the final product is certified under the NOP Regulations unless they are certified in accordance with the NOP regulations.

•Use a combination of both organic and non-organic sources for a single fiber that is identified as “organic” in the final product.

https://ota.com/sites/default/files/indexed_files/OTA_FiberAdvocacy_140915.pdf

As a practical alternative, the policy memo explicitly confirms that textile products produced in accordance with GOTS, such as apparel, mattresses, or socks, may be sold as “organic” in the United States, although they may not refer to NOP certification or carry the USDA Organic seal.

Your Guide to Common Mattress Terms

by Mattress One @ Mattress One Blog - Mattress Information & Tips

A Quick Glossary to Help Your Mattress Shopping

Ultra-plush, firm, innerspring, hybrid – the minute you step inside a mattress store, you're bombarded with terms you may have never heard before. How are you supposed to find the right mattress for your needs when you and the sales associate don't even seem to be speaking the same language?

Worry not! We've assembled this handy list of common terms used to describe mattress comfort and construction. The next time you go mattress shopping, you can walk through the store with confidence. Now you'll know exactly what you’re talking about, which will help you find exactly what you need!

Mattress Comfort

Ultra Plush Soft: This is the softest type of mattress available. It's truly like sleeping on a cloud! Often these mattresses even come with pillowtops (an extra layer of fluffy padding) to make them even softer.

Plush Soft: These mattresses offer relaxing softness with just the right amount of support. Sometimes they too can come with pillowtops for added relaxation.

Cushion Firm: This mattress is great for someone who knows they need support but loves the added comfort of a soft mattress. Cushion firm mattresses are true middle-of-the-road mattresses, which also make them a great choice for couples with divergent sleeping needs and styles.

Firm: If you want to feel like you're floating on top of the mattress rather than sinking into it, a firm mattress is for you! These mattresses offer great support, and sleepers won’t sink too far into them.

Ultra Firm: These mattresses are about as firm as it gets. When you're sleeping on an ultra firm mattress, you can forget about sinking deep into the mattress. These mattresses are great for people who need a lot of support as they sleep.

Mattress Construction

Traditional Innerspring: A traditional innerspring mattress is made of tightly coiled steel springs covered in layers of soft fabric and padding. The springs provide support and the bouncy feel you get when first sitting or lying on the mattress.

Individual Pocketed Coils: Pocketed coils start with traditional steel springs, but wrap each spring in its own fabric coil. This helps to reduce motion transfer across the bed – great if your partner is a restless sleeper or has to get up earlier than you do.

Hybrid: Most mattresses can be placed in one of two categories: foam mattresses or innerspring mattresses. Hybrid mattresses combine both materials. They’re usually constructed with a steel support system with some type of foam used as an added comfort system.

Memory Foam: Memory foam mattresses are constructed from special viscoelastic foam. This foam conforms to your body as you sleep, cradling you and providing support in all the right places. Just like traditional innerspring mattresses, though, they can come in different firmnesses for different styles of sleepers.

Gel Foam: Gel foam mattresses make use of a gel in the construction of the mattress, either in the support system or the upholstery layers (or both). This gel can be used to provide extra support, create a softer feel, or make the mattress cooler to sleep on.

Have More Questions?

Don't worry – at Mattress One, we understand that not everyone lives and breathes mattresses the way we do! We’re happy explain all the industry terms we use in order to help you find the right mattress. So what are you waiting for? Visit us today to start shopping!

What’s in This Mattress? Do Consumers Really Care About the Materials, Construction and Chemicals Inside Their New Mattresses and Bedding?

by Dale T. Read @ Blog - bedfax

What do consumers really care about when they are buying a new mattress? Every piece of meaningful research on consumer preferences from Furniture Today and other sources confirms that consumers are mostly interested in comfort, support and performance leading to a really “good night’s sleep”, as well as price or real perceived value when purchasing a new mattress.

So the questions have arisen: do consumers really care about what is in their mattress, just what are the materials used, which chemicals are part of the mattress and what goes into that mattress or how is it constructed?

Recent reports from ISPA and Furniture Today indicate that nearly 20 million mattress units are sold in the United States every year, and along with that another 17 to 19 million foundations or box springs are sold. Total sales for these reached 38 million-plus units and$14.2 billion in retail mattress/ bedding sales.

According to Furniture Today’s July 27th “Making the SLEEP Connection” column written by David Perry, consumer research “…found that one in three consumers –31% - said that the main construction materials in a mattress are important to them when they buy a mattress for themselves or spouse or partner..”  That 31% of $14.2 equals $4.58 billion in sales that are affected by consumers wanting to know what is inside a mattress. Perry wrote,  “Any good retail sales associate should be able to talk knowledgeably about how the materials inside the bed will yield a good night of sleep.”

In October 2015 Colonial LLC, a leader in mattress showroom top-of-bed displays and POP materials released a study that stated “ seven in ten respondents said that it is ‘very important’ to them too know how a mattress in constructed.”  This research makes an even more compelling case that$9.94 billion in mattress sales could be affected by a retail sales associate knowing what is in the mattress that the RSA is selling to the consumer.

Believing there is ample evidence that a significant percentage of consumers really do want to know “What’s in Your Mattress”, while also keeping it simple, and getting to the point, The Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) is now re-introducing a new, simplified “consumer disclosure contents label program called BEDFAX. It is a simple, third-party, voluntary contents verification program supported by extensive written documentation, testing and certifications declaring the percentage by weight or volume of the materials, chemicals, and contents in the mattress cover, the quilt or comfort layer and the core of the mattress. BEDFAX is a contents transparency program, not a “green” marketing program, although one can make “green” claims by submitting current, active certifications and testing reports from valid third parties according to guidelines of the Federal Trade Commission for meeting substantiation requirements.

The simple, easy-to-read BEDFAX contents labels will make it easy for both sales people and consumers wanting to know exactly “What is in Your Mattress.”

Back Pain and Your Mattress

by Mattress One @ Mattress One Blog - Mattress Information & Tips

Waking Up Creaky and Achy? Your Mattress May Be to Blame!

Does this describe you? Morning after morning, you wake up to a dull ache in your back. You sit on the mattress for a minute; you stretch. You shake the sleep out of your head and get up to start your day. By the time you’re done with your morning workout, shower, and the rest of your routine, the back pain is gone – until the next day, of course, when it starts again.

You might think that you’re just getting old(er). You might think that the back pain comes from too much time sitting in an office chair. You might not think about the pain at all once it goes away.

But have you ever thought that maybe your mattress is responsible for the pain?

It’s a fact: old, worn-out mattresses can cause back pain.

All mattresses get old eventually, and when they do, they usually send their owners a few telltale signs that it’s time to go mattress shopping. As a mattress ages, it becomes less supportive, often starting to sag in the middle. Pressure points increase, and it’s hard to maintain proper sleeping posture. This can lead to back pain.

How can you tell if your mattress is behind your back pain?

Back pain is a huge medical problem – approximately 31 million Americans are suffering from it right now, and up to 80% of us will experience back problems at some point. And there are many different causes of back pain, ranging from accidents and injuries to arthritis, poor posture, and even some types of cancer. If you’re experiencing back pain, it’s not always easy to tell whether your mattress is to blame or you have another medical problem.

One of the first things you should do, of course, is to talk to your doctor. Based on your medical history, your doctor might want to order certain tests to rule out potentially serious medical problems. But if the cause isn’t an obvious medical problem, then you might want to look more closely at your mattress.

Consider the following:

• How old is your mattress? If it’s more than 8-10 years old, then it’s time for a new mattress, no matter what is ultimately causing your back pain.
• When does your back hurt? If your back tends to hurt first thing in the morning, with the pain going away relatively quickly, that’s another sign your mattress is the cause of your back pain.
• Do you wake up tossing and turning? If the discomfort won’t let you get an uninterrupted night’s sleep, then you should definitely consider a new mattress.
• Do you sleep better away from home? Waking up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when you’re anywhere but your home sweet home is a sure sign that your mattress needs to go.

If you answered yes to one or more of the questions above, then you know it’s time to go mattress shopping. And here at Mattress One, we’re eager to help you get started. Our mattress experts can help you find the mattress that feels the most comfortable to you.

Say goodbye to creaky, achy back pain, and say hello to a new mattress! All of us here at Mattress One hope to see you soon.

The BEDFAX Survey Results are in

by Dale T. Read @ Blog - bedfax

The Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) wants our membership’s opinions as we pursue various policies and programs.  Our active SSA Board of Directors has voted specifically to reach out to our retailer and manufacturing members to get your opinions on various topics.  One of those topics is the BEDFAX® Verified Contents Label Program for Mattresses. We launched our BEDFAX volunteer labeling program with a fanfare of enthusiasm expecting a high participation rate from the industry in what we thought would be a powerful consumer-focused sales tool for mattress sales. We found however, that initial enthusiasm did not in fact translate into high participation. With this in mind, we created a five-question survey on BEDFAX and sent it out to our extensive list of SSA Showroom Attendees …a total of 3128 recipients including retail owners, retail buyers, manufacturers and suppliers. Our plan was to get a broad-based response from as many SSA showroom attendees as we could get.

Distribution and response rate:  Out of a total of 3128 e-mailed surveys, the SSA heard from 197 respondents (a rate of 6%). While that is an average response rate, the number was so large that we received some valuable although diverse information from those who replied. Out of the 197 respondents 110 only answered the very first question, while 87 completed the entire five-question survey. The vast majority of respondents (167 or 85%) were retailers, while a much smaller percentage (30 or 15%) were manufacturers and suppliers to the mattress industry.

The findings were very informative, if somewhat contradictory. Let us explain.

The first question was simply: Do your customers ever ask you or your retailers, “What is this mattress made of?”  An overwhelming 81.31% of respondents replied YES.  Only 18.69% said that consumers do not inquire about the contents of mattress. So on the surface that should put the debate over that question to bed...or so you’d think. It more or less confirms that contents are an issue, and those consumer-focused advocates who want a complete contents label are not wrong in their assumptions that consumer DO care about “what’s inside” ...at least that is what 81% of our survey says.

The second question is where things began to get a bit contradictory or slightly confusing. The SSA asked “Do YOU have mattresses for which you would find this kind of contents verification helpful for the RSA or consumer? Again 81.61% of the people answering all the questions said “YES.”  But the 18% who said “NO” had strong opinions. One said, “We believe that the information supplied is adequate.” Another said, ‘”Nothing really tells what is in our mattresses.” A third, said, “ Virtually no one cares.” And another said that such a system would expose, “the really junky foam and coat hanger wire scam the major brands market.” While a minority, the negatives were loud and clear in their opinions.

Our third question was, “Do you think a clearer contents label would affect the sale of mattresses to any degree? (Would it be helpful?) While the answer was still a strong “YES” at 74% favorable, the 26% of NO’s still were strong in their opinions. On the favorable side one theme that evolved out of this research and was repeated several times: ”This would be very helpful, especially when it comes to ‘natural’ content. This is applicable to environmental concerns.”  On the other hand several respondents stated that consumers do not read the label or that too much information can be a bad thing for selling.  One retailer said that the information already provided was adequate, and another stressed that “comfort is the main determinant.” The one trend that did seem to emerge from this question was that the BEDFAX labeling program could lend itself to “environmental” or “natural” sales. There is a parallel with health, safety and wellness customers with consumers concerned about truth in labeling.

The next question focused on details of the label program itself, more or less guidance and details on how such a labeling program would work effectively. This question deserves a separate report or write-up itself, as the SSA plans and executes the details of the BEDFAX® Program.

Our final question was a critique. We asked our members and attendees what their biggest reservation or concern was about the BEDFAX® Verified Mattress Contents Label Program.  “Could it be a negative?”  Only 36% answered that this could be a negative, while 63 % answered, “No, it was not a negative.” In fact a few expressed support such as “I’m not sure I have any objections” or “I love the idea.”  Some were neutral or mildly concerned expressing ideas such as, ”Not every customer cares or understands” or they expressed concern that an open system could actually benefit competitors. However the 36 % negatives (1/3rd of the respondents) really did give us a lot to think about. Answers varied from: “Offers too much honesty.” “Customers may shy away from mattresses with high petroleum-based foam content” or “there has to be methodology to prevent manufacturers from cheating with their claims.” One respondent worried that too much information could create confusion and complicate the sale, another was concerned about too many labels and another said he/she did not have enough information to answer.

Stepping back, there are several overall conclusions at this point.  I think we can safely conclude that if the BEDFAX program is to succeed, it has to be consumer-driven. When consumers ask for better/clearer/more trustworthy contents labels on mattresses that they buy, (as they enjoy on other goods), then we will see retailers asking their manufacturers to provide them. Without this push, the industry alone has too many reservations and concerns to get involved. Finally, and probably most importantly, there really does seem to be a correlation between environmental or health, wellness and safety marketing claims and a successful contents label program.

We welcome any further thoughts, opinions or feedback you may have.

Learn more about the circadian rhythm and how it helps you sleep.

Do you go to sleep and wake up around the same time every day? Do you notice that you tend to feel drowsy at certain times of the day and wide awake at other times? If so, you have your circadian rhythm to thank for this.

The circadian rhythm is a 24-hour sleep/wake cycle that’s found in most living beings – not just humans, but also animals, plants, and even fungi and some bacteria. In humans, its effects can be measured in hormone production, body temperature changes, and of course, sleepiness and wakefulness. Without your circadian rhythm, you’d find it much harder to go to sleep and be awake at the proper times.

Learn more about how the circadian rhythm works and what you can do to keep it working well below!

How does the circadian rhythm work?

The circadian rhythm allows you to keep a consistent sleep/wake cycle even when you don’t have access to outside stimuli, like clocks and the lightening and darkening sky. The rhythm itself is run by a cluster of 20,000 nerves in the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, or SCN. This is the body’s “master clock.”

The SCN controls the hormone production, body temperature changes, and more that get you through your routine each and every day. One of the most important things it does is receive light information from the eyes. As night draws in and the light dims, your SCN tells the pineal gland to start producing melatonin. This is the hormone that makes you sleepy at night.

Most of the time, the SCN runs your circadian rhythm so unobtrusively that you don’t even notice it. You don’t think of it as a complex biological and chemical process; to you, it’s just your routine. It’s only when the circadian rhythm gets disrupted that you start to notice negative effects. These range from feeling grouchy or groggy after an episode of jet lag to diseases such as diabetes, obesity, seasonal affective disorder, depression, and bipolar disorder.

How can you keep your circadian rhythm working well?

Routine is the key to a well-functioning circadian rhythm. Try to go to bed and wake up at around the same time every day – even on the weekends. Make sure you’re getting a full night’s sleep every night (seven to nine hours for adults). Practice good sleep hygiene, like banishing screens from the bedroom. The bright light from televisions, tablets, and cell phones can confuse the SCN and interfere with the production of melatonin, which can make it harder to sleep.

The other important thing you can do is monitor your circadian rhythm and bring up any changes to your doctor. To a certain extent, the circadian rhythm is outside our conscious control. If you find yourself suffering from insomnia or an irregular sleep/wake schedule, the best thing you can do is consult with your doctor. He or she may be able to find and treat the underlying cause so you can get back on track.

Let the folks at Mattress One help!

While we’re certainly not doctors, all of us here at Mattress One understand the importance of a good night’s sleep. We also know you won’t be getting that kind of sleep on your lumpy old mattress! If you find your mattress is keeping you up at night, don’t waste another day. Come to Mattress One and find your perfect mattress today.

Three Companies Barred from Advertising Mattresses as Free From Volatile Organic Compounds Without Scientific Evidence to Back Up Claims

by FTC @ Blog - bedfax

Under settlements with the Federal Trade Commission, three mattress manufacturers have agreed to stop making unsupported claims that the mattresses they sell are free of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

In addition to challenging the companies’ VOC-free claims, the FTC charged that two of the companies made unsupported claims that their mattresses were chemical-free and lacked odor.  The FTC also challenged one company’s claim that its mattresses are made from 100 percent natural materials, and another company’s claim that its mattresses were certified by an organic mattress organization.

In settling the FTC’s charges, the companies have agreed not to make similar claims in the future, unless they have competent and reliable scientific evidence to prove they are true.  In addition, one company is barred from making misrepresentations about certifications.

VOCs are carbon-containing compounds that easily evaporate at room temperature.  Some VOCs can be harmful to human health and the environment.  Last year, the FTC brought a similar set of cases against paint companies that also advertised their products as VOC-free.

Relief-Mart, Inc.  The FTC’s complaint alleges that Relief-Mart, based in Westlake Village, California, did not have and rely upon a reasonable basis to substantiate its claims that its Biogreen memory foam mattresses do not contain VOCs, have no VOC off-gassing, and lack the odors commonly associated with memory foam mattresses.

Essentia Natural Memory Foam Company, IncThe FTC alleges that Essentia made unsubstantiated claims that its mattresses do not contain VOCs, are chemical-free, have no chemical off-gassing or odor, and are made from 100 percent natural materials.  Moreover, the complaint alleges that Essentia claimed that tests show that its memory foam is free of VOCs and formaldehyde when, in fact, tests do not support these claims.

Ecobaby Organics, Inc.  The complaint against Ecobaby, based in San Diego, California, alleges that Ecobaby made unsubstantiated claims that its mattresses are chemical-free; formaldehyde-free; free of VOCs, such as toluene and benzene; and without toxic substances.  The complaint further alleges that the company misrepresented that its mattresses are certified by an independent third-party certifier when, in fact, the certifier is an alter ego of the company that awarded its seal to its own products without applying objective standards.   Finally, according to the complaint, Ecobaby Organics claimed that tests show that its mattresses are VOC-free, chemical-free, and Formaldehyde-free when tests do not support these claims.

The proposed orders bar Relief-MartEssentia, and Ecobaby, from making VOC-free claims unless the VOC level is zero micrograms per cubic meter or the company relies upon competent and reliable scientific evidence that its mattresses contain no more than trace levels of VOCs, based on the guidance in the FTC’s Green Guides.  The orders also bar environmental benefit or attribute claims, and certain health claims, unless they are true, not misleading, and supported by scientific evidence.

In addition, the Essentia and Ecobaby orders bar the companies from making chemical-free claims, prohibit any misrepresentations about whether the companies have testing to prove the claims about their mattresses, and bar the companies from making non-toxic claims without scientific support.  The Relief-Mart and Essentia orders also bar the companies from making certain types of odor claims unless they are true, not misleading, and supported by scientific evidence.  The Essentia order also bars the company from making natural claims without scientific support. Finally, the Ecobaby order prohibits the company from making misrepresentations about third-party certifications of its mattresses.

Information for Consumers and Business

According to the Green Guides, companies sometimes claim that their products are “free of” a chemical or other ingredient that may be an environmental concern.  When marketers say a product is “free of” an ingredient, the product must not contain the ingredient or have only a trace amount.  The “trace amount” test is met if:  1) the level of the ingredient is less than that which would be found as an acknowledged trace contaminant or background level; 2) the ingredient’s presence does not cause material harm that consumers typically associate with it; and 3) the ingredient has not been added intentionally.  The FTC has a new post on the agency’s Business Blog page about mattresses and VOCs titled FTC to mattress companies:  Don’t pad your green claims.

The Commission votes to accept the packages containing the proposed consent orders for public comment were 4-0.  The FTC will publish a description of the packages in the Federal Register shortly.  The agreements will be subject to public comment for 30 days, beginning today and continuing through August 26, 2013, after which the Commission will decide whether to make the proposed consent orders final.

Comments in paper form should be mailed or delivered to:  Federal Trade Commission, Office of the Secretary, Room H-113 (Annex D), 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20580.

NOTE:  The Commission issues an administrative complaint when it has “reason to believe” that the law has been or is being violated, and it appears to the Commission that a proceeding is in the public interest.  When the Commission issues a consent order on a final basis, it carries the force of law with respect to future actions.  Each violation of such an order may result in a civil penalty of up to $16,000.

The Federal Trade Commission works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices and to provide information to help spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint in English or Spanish, visit the FTC's online Complaint Assistant or call 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357). The FTC enters complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to more than 2,000 civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad. Your Guide to Mattress Sizes

by Mattress One @ Mattress One Blog - Mattress Information & Tips

Twin, Full, Queen or King?

The size of mattress you pick will depend on the size of the room it’ll be placed in and how many people will be sleeping on it. But in order to make the best decision, you’ll want to know the exact dimensions you’ll be working with, as well as the pros and cons of each mattress size. That’s why we’ve created this handy guide to mattress sizes. We want to make sure that the next time you come into our store, you’ll be armed with the right information.

Learn more about the different sizes below, and be sure to give us a call or just stop by if you need any help finding the right size mattress for your home.

Twin

Dimensions: 38” x 75”

Where to Use: Fit for a single sleeper, twin beds are perfect for kids’ rooms, especially young kids who have just outgrown their cribs. The compact size makes it easy for even a small room to feel big (especially when paired with a young child’s imagination). Parents also like these mattresses because they can be used on daybeds and bunk beds, giving them more options in tight spaces.

Twin XL

Dimensions: 38” x 80”

Where to Use: Like a regular twin mattress, a twin XL is really only big enough to sleep one. However, those five extra inches of legroom can come in quite handy for adults and taller adolescents! College dormitories also tend to favor these mattresses, as they’re long enough for even the lankiest basketball players but still narrow enough to fit in the dorm.

Full

Dimensions: 53” x 75”

Where to Use: A full bed is a bit wider than a twin, but it’s really quite a squeeze for two. Most couples wouldn’t like sleeping on a full bed night after night, unless space is really tight. The lack of legroom can also cramp many adults’ style. Because of this, full beds are best recommended for children and teenagers. They can also be a great option for guest rooms.

Queen

Dimensions: 60” x 80”

Where to Use: Plenty wide for two and long enough for even the tallest, queen beds are a great compromise mattress for couples with relatively small bedrooms. Because queen beds are relatively narrow, it’s easier to squeeze two nightstands, a dresser, or other furniture into the bedroom, making the most out of every inch of space. Single sleepers also love queen beds, as it gives them plenty of space to stretch out at night while not cramping their style during the day.

King

Dimensions: 76” x 80”

Where to Use: When partners want lots of space to stretch out at night, the king bed is the right pick! King beds are especially great in hot, sticky climates, as both partners can retreat to their end of the bed in order to savor those blessed last cool inches of the mattress. Of course, couples who choose a mattress this big need to have a big bedroom. Otherwise, they might have to make compromises on their other bedroom furniture.

California King

Dimensions: 72” x 84”

Where to Use: As you might guess, the California king is especially popular in the state of California. It’s actually slightly smaller than the regular king bed in terms of total area, but most couples don’t really notice the lack of space. This mattress size is great for bedrooms that are longer than they are wide and for very tall sleepers. California king sleepers just need to be careful when selecting bedding, as regular king size sheets and blankets won’t fit on this mattress.

You Say "Ultra Firm," I Say "Ultra Plush"

by Mattress One @ Mattress One Blog - Mattress Information & Tips

Let's Not Call the Whole Thing Off

You and your partner agree on so much, from the little things, like what movie to see on a Saturday night, to the big things, like what you both want in life. The only sticking point? You can’t seem to agree on a mattress, and you’re both losing sleep over it.

Relax! Here at Mattress One, we see this kind of problem all the time. We promise that having trouble finding a mattress that's comfortable for both of you doesn't mean that your relationship is doomed. It also doesn’t mean that you have to shell out for a pricey adjustable bed or make do with twin beds on opposite sides of the room, like a couple in a 1950s sitcom.

Instead, the secret to finding a great mattress for both of you is the same secret that's gotten you this far in your relationship: compromise. And we have the tools and knowledge to help you do just that.

First, find out why you can’t find a mattress that fits both of you.

Knowledge is power in many things in life, and that includes mattress-buying. The reasons why your partner wants a hard-as-a-board mattress while you prefer to feel like you're sleeping on a cloud often have to do with your sleep style. Side sleepers prefer different kinds of mattresses than back sleepers and so on. See our post on Sleep Style & Your Mattress for more details. Differences in height, weight, and body structure also play a role in determining which mattresses will feel most comfortable to which people.

Once you know why each of you prefers the kind of mattress you do, it'll be easier to narrow down your search in the hope of finding the perfect mattress.

Next, consider hybrid mattress forms.

Even if you discover that you and your partner are polar opposites in terms of sleep style and "meeting in the middle" only makes you both miserable, you still have options! For instance, a firm mattress with a pillow top could give the softness one partner craves while still providing the support the other partner needs. Memory foam toppers (especially in twin XL size) can also help one partner get softness while the other gets support. Finally, certain manufacturers of memory foam and latex foam mattresses will create mattresses that are more supportive on one side and softer on the other, allowing you and your partner to both get what you want.

If all else fails, remember this: two twins equal one king.

No, we're not talking about the plot to The Man in the Iron Mask. It’s a simple fact that if you put two twin XL mattresses together, they take up the same amount of space as a single king-sized bed. (A twin Xl mattress is 38” x 80”, while a king mattress is 76" x 80".) If your bedroom can fit a king-sized bed, this could be the way to go. Once your bed is piled with sheets, blankets, comforters and pillows, nobody will know that you and your partner are sleeping on twin mattresses – except, of course, you and your partner, both snoozing peacefully and in perfect comfort.

Stop in today!

The best way to find the perfect mattress for you and your partner is to visit Mattress One. We have hundreds of mattresses from all the best brands. And remember, with our 180-day in-home trial*, we give you plenty of time to make sure the mattress really works for both of you and send it back to us if it doesn’t. Check out our offerings today, and be sure to get ready for a great night's sleep for years to come!

FTC says company didn’t have support for “organic” mattress claims

FTC says company didn’t have support for “organic” mattress claims

by FTC @ Blog - bedfax

By: Lesley Fair at the FTC      Click here to see this article on the FTC Website.

Dads and Moms want what’s best for their babies, so some companies feature adjectives like “organic” or “natural” in ads for infant gear. Those are among the terms Illinois-based Moonlight Slumber used to sell its baby mattresses online and at some of the nation’s biggest retailers. But according to an FTC complaint, when it came to backing its mattress claims with proper support, the company was asleep at the switch.

In ads for its Starlight Simplicity and Little Star mattresses, Moonlight Slumber described the products as “organic” and “a safe, organic alternative to traditional crib mattresses” with a “Natural Latex Core.” The company said other mattresses it sold were made from “BabySafe Natural Materials,” including “eco-friendly plant-based foam.” The company also claimed that testing proved “there are no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds, commonly known as ‘Off Gassing’).”

And Moonlight Slumber suggested that parents didn’t have to just take their word for it. According to a logo the company prominently displayed, its products had the “Green Safety Shield.”

Organic and natural? Won’t emit VOCs? Proven by testing? Bearing the Green Safety Shield? On a parent’s shopping list, that’s a check, check, check, and check. But according to the FTC, those claims were deceptive, deceptive, deceptive, and deceptive.

The complaint alleges that a substantial majority of the content in the Starlight Simplicity and Little Star mattresses wasn’t organic. The cores and fire barriers contained no organic content at all and the cotton cover was 70% non-organic. In fact, according to the FTC, the only purely organic content was the mattress ribbon, a minor decorative component.

What’s more, most of the company’s mattress cores were made wholly or primarily of polyurethane, a non-natural material made from isocyanates and polyols derived from petrochemicals. Despite Moonlight Slumber’s ad claims, the latex core for the Little Star mattress was synthetic, not natural – and six other mattress styles contained little or no plant-based material. The FTC also alleges that the company didn’t have sound science to support the claim that its products didn’t emit substances like VOCs. What about Moonlight Slumber’s representation that it had testing to back up that promise? False, says the FTC.

And who bestowed the “Green Safety Shield” on Moonlight Slumber? The company awarded the seal to itself.

The proposed order prohibits a host of misrepresentations about whether a product is organic, natural, plant-based, emissions-free, or VOC-free. It also requires appropriate proof for testing claims and for representations about other environmental and health benefits. In addition, the order nixes misleading certifications and requires the company to clearly disclose when it has a material connection to an endorser. The FTC is accepting public comments about the proposed settlement until October 30, 2017.

For companies that want to rest easy about their substantiation obligations, the case offers two take-aways.

Consumers won’t take deceptive organic claims lying down. Advertisers must substantiate their organic claims. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program develops standards for organically-produced agricultural products. For other product categories not covered by the National Organic Program, long-standing FTC substantiation principles apply. Advertisers must have a reasonable basis for claiming that their non-agricultural products – for example, mattresses – are “organic.” FTC and USDA staff, along with various stakeholders, discussed these issues at an October 2016 roundtable on consumer perception of organic claims.

It’s risky to sign, seal, and deliver your own seals. Duck-lipped mirror shots used to be our least favorite form of selfie, but we have a new cellar dweller: seals or certifications that companies award themselves without clearly explaining that to consumers. As the FTC’s Green Guides and dozens of law enforcement actions establish, misleading certifications raise particular concerns when they appear to give an independent authoritative A-OK for health, safety, or environmental claims that consumers can’t evaluate for themselves. If your ad features seals or certifications of your own designation, make that abundantly clear to consumers.

Foam or Innerspring: Which is Best for You

by Mattress One @ Mattress One Blog - Mattress Information & Tips

Choosing The Right Comfort Level

One of the first things you need to determine when you're shopping for a new mattress is what type of mattress you want to buy. There are a number of different types of mattresses on the market, but two of the most popular are memory foam mattresses and innerspring mattresses. Many consumers find that they'll choose between these two for their ultimate comfort.

What are the differences between these mattresses, and which is right for you? Only you can answer the latter question, but we can help with the former! Keep reading to learn more about memory foam mattresses, innerspring mattresses, and the pros and cons of each type.

What Are Memory Foam Mattresses?

Foam mattresses are constructed using certain types of memory foam to provide a supportive yet comfortable surface. There are a number of different types of foam mattresses, including memory foam (viscoelastic), polyurethane, and gel. These types of mattresses vary widely in terms of how they are constructed and the type of support, feel, and heat properties they offer.

Foam Mattress Pros

First, let's talk comfort. Many people find that since memory foam mattresses conform to the body, they produce the most comfortable night's sleep. They reduce pressure points, keep the spine in proper alignment, and can even reduce lower back pain over time. Foam mattresses can also be constructed with hypoallergenic materials, and they don't collect as many dust mites, so people with allergies or respiratory problems might find they're able to breathe more easily. Finally, memory foam mattresses are very quiet and don't transfer motion between partners.

Foam Mattress Cons

Of course, no mattress is perfect, and foam mattresses have their downsides. Foam mattresses can be unusually sensitive to climate, becoming softer in warm climates and harder in cold ones. They can also retain heat more than a traditional mattress would. The mattresses can be very heavy, though on the plus side, you don't need to flip them. Lastly, foam mattresses can often be one of the more expensive options on the market, which turns many consumers off.

What Are Innerspring Mattresses?

An innerspring mattress is often known as a traditional mattress. These mattresses use a number of steel springs to provide support for sleepers. There are many different types of innerspring mattresses, and their construction varies widely. Some have individually wrapped pocket-coil springs, while others have all the springs connected in a single unit. Innerspring mattresses also vary in the type of upholstery, padding, and other materials they use to provide comfort to the sleeper.

Innerspring Mattress Pros

Let's start with the obvious: innerspring mattresses are what most people think of when they think of a mattress, so innerspring mattresses are available just about everywhere. There are tons of options on the market, and the product is well-established. Consumers can choose the firmness that fits them best. Innerspring mattresses also tend to be less expensive than other types, although there are certainly pricier options out there if you want the highest-quality mattress money can buy.

Innerspring Mattress Cons

Even the tried-and-true innerspring mattresses have their cons. First of all, innerspring mattresses often transfer motion. If you or your partner is a restless sleeper, the other person will feel every toss and turn. The steel coils can become squeaky as time goes on, and the material supported by the coils can start to sag. Because of this, innerspring mattresses tend not to last as long – and flipping the mattress to improve longevity doesn't work with more recent models, since many modern innerspring models are built in specific layers in order to combat sagging.

Memory Foam vs. Spring Mattresses: The Complete Guide

by Linda Coursey @ Bedsheetadvisor

Spring mattresses have been around since the late 1800’s. At their peak, they were seen as an incredible invention far beyond the times of hay and sheep wool.
