Sleep and metabolism | How does sleep affect weight loss?

by hello@slumbr.com (Slumbr) @ Slumbr

A little nighttime reading

Sleep and metabolism: How does sleep affect weight loss?

Everybody knows diet and exercise have a major impact on weight and metabolism. But do you know how important sleep is to the weight loss equation? Or that lack of sleep may actually be the culprit behind a growing waistline?

Sleep and metabolism are very much connected. Whether you’re looking to simply maintain a healthy weight or seriously shed some pounds, prioritizing sleep is a smart strategy.

A study of 1,000 people found that the folks who slept less were more likely to weigh more. This correlation isn’t surprising. Sleep (or lack of it) plays a key role in the systems of your body that affect weight. Sleep helps maintain a healthy metabolism, regulate hormones and stimulate detoxification.

The relationship between sleep and weight loss is multi-faceted, so how exactly does sleep affect weight loss? Read on to find out more.

Sleep’s effect on appetite
Sleep is intimately associated with our endocrine system, the collection of glands that produces hormones responsible for metabolism (among many other functions). A number of studies reveal the various ways lack of sleep disrupts the normal functioning of this system.

Lack of sleep will make you hungrier
Sleep deprivation compromises your fat cells’ ability to use insulin, which in turn throws your “hunger hormones” out of whack. For example, when we don’t get enough sleep, the levels of ghrelin in our bodies increase. Ghrelin is a growth hormone that boosts appetite and fat production. Conversely, lack of sleep causes levels of leptin to decrease. Leptin is a hormone that curbs hunger and signals to your body that it’s satiated. Basically when you haven’t slept enough, you’ll feel hungrier, and it’ll take more food to feel full. Even worse, chronic long-term sleep deprivation promotes insulin resistance, a risk factor for obesity and diabetes.

You’ll crave fatty, high-carb foods
It becomes harder to maintain self-control during those times when we don’t get enough sleep. A tired brain craves substances that provide feel-good comfort. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed volunteers were more prone to snacking on high-calorie, high carb foods when sleep deprived, while a University of Chicago study revealed that people choose higher-fat foods when lacking sleep.

You won’t have the energy and drive to keep fit
Finally, a poor sleep schedule can also mess up your cortisol levels, causing spikes at inappropriate times. Cortisol is the “stress hormone” that tells your body to conserve energy to fuel your waking hours. If your cortisol levels are abnormal, this can signal your body to hold on to fat and trigger blood sugar crashes. Over time, elevated cortisol levels leads to adrenal fatigue, a condition that causes fatigue, body aches and digestive problems.

“Sleep hormone” melatonin and your ability to torch calories
Your brain’s pineal gland secretes the hormone melatonin, which regulates your circadian rhythm (ie: your “body clock”) to determine when you fall asleep and wake up. A study with rodents found a correlation between higher levels of melatonin and activated brown fat. The research indicates that melatonin lowers obesity levels, irrespective of activity and food intake, which suggests that the brown fat is helping weight loss.

If you’ve never heard of brown fat, this is a type of fat everybody has which, opposed to white fat, actually helps you burn energy and calories.

To boost your levels of melatonin (and subsequently your levels of brown fat):

Additionally, a study published in Diabetes indicated that just turning down the thermostat to a sleep-appropriate 66℉ can help your body produce more energy-burning brown fat. Study participants doubled their volumes of brown fat after only four weeks of sleeping at this cooler temperature.

Obesity’s link to sleep apnea
The most sleep-starved folks are often those with sleep apnea, a condition that affects over 18 million US adults. It’s believed this number is far higher for a condition considered heavily underdiagnosed. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder where a person’s breathing is disrupted throughout the night (sometimes hundreds of times), depriving the brain of oxygen. This disorder can lead to heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, acid reflux, high blood pressure, depression and asthma. A telltale sign of having sleep apnea is chronic, heavy snoring.

One of the biggest contributing factors to sleep apnea is obesity. It’s estimated that between 25% - 45% of obese adults have obstructive sleep apnea. When you’re overweight, fatty deposits in your neck can block breathing and obstruct your air passages.

The Catch-22 is that as sleep apnea keeps you from getting restful sleep, it then disrupts your hormones -- which in turn contributes to weight gain. Sleep apnea sufferers often fail to get enough sleep that provides the energy to power through workouts or fight food cravings.

Exercise and diet to help lose weight can help alleviate sleep apnea, but we also recommend seeing a sleep specialist for more insight if you suspect you have the disorder. There are a number of treatment protocols that will address the problem.

Make sleep an essential component of overall wellness and fitness
These are just some of the ways in which sleep has been linked to metabolism and weight. So now, aside from keeping a healthy diet and sticking to a fitness regimen, consider how you can make high quality sleep a priority in your weight management game plan.

Ready to tackle that muffin top by improving your sleep self? Slumbr has a variety of tips for getting better quality shuteye.

What Are Box Springs For?

by Shop Manager @ Ben's

Did you know that the saying “Sleep tight” comes from an era long before the invention of modern mattresses? Once upon a time, people actually slept on a bed suspended on ropes that would loosen over the course of an evening. Every night before going back to bed, these people would have to pull the ropes tight to ensure the best possible support for sleeping. The invention of the box spring completely changed all that, to the point that today we hardly can imagine falling asleep without the added support that a box spring provides. Here at Ben’s, we carry a wide variety of excellent box springs, and while some people try to justify sleeping on a mattress without the extra support, the truth is that using those box springs is how the mattress manufacturers intended that we sleep. Basic Uses for a Box Spring Put as simply as possible, there are three reasons why someone would require a box spring: Support First and foremost, a box spring’s purpose is to create a flat and solid structure for the actual mattress to rest on top of. The very first box springs were just wire frames, without the wood and cloth, but today the makeup of a box spring depends a lot on what type of mattress a person purchases. For example, wood frames are more appropriate for memory foam, while standard box springs tend to work better with innerspring mattresses. Longevity Another reason why box springs are essential is that they can help preserve the longevity of the mattress itself. Without that support, certain mattresses can sag and wear out more quickly than they would have otherwise. Most manufacturers will not honor warranties on mattresses that are not used in conjunction with a box spring for that very reason, so for the benefit of the long-term use of the mattress, a box spring really can help. Ease of Use Box springs also make it easier to get in and out of bed by allowing sleepers to slide easily into their sheets because the box spring allows the actual mattress to lie at an ideal height. We even sell box springs of different heights here at Ben’s, meaning ease of use really is just a matter of finding the perfect height for a mattress et. Choosing a Box Spring With so much diversity in the types of box springs currently for sale, choosing the right one comes down to a couple of factors. For starters, finding the right height is important for the aforementioned reasons, but it also is best to buy the box spring that was designed to accompany whatever mattress you are interested in purchasing. They were designed and

What’s Inside a Mattress?

by Cullie Burris @ Ben's

Most customers are solely concerned about whether or not their mattresses are comfortable, seldom do any give consideration to exactly why they are comfortable. The truth is that mattresses can be built from a number of materials in many different ways to make up a sleeping surface for every type and shape of human body. The following is a look at what materials make up a mattress, and hopefully this information will help Ben’s customers find the right mattresses for them, regardless of whether they shop online or come visit us in person at our store. The Most Common Mattress Materials There are a handful of materials that are most common in mattresses, including: Steel Coils Many mattresses feature some type of steel coil, which either can be arranged in an open manner or individually wrapped or “pocketed.” They are the primary source of support in many types of beds. Foam The other main option is foam, which adheres to the contours of the body and sometimes regulates the temperature of the mattress. There are several types of foam used in today’s mattresses, including memory foam, gel memory foam, polyurethane foam, and others. Polyester Batting Some pillowtop mattresses use this polyester “fluff” to add some body to the top part of the mattress. Cotton There are several different ways that this popular material can be used in a mattress, ranging from interior uses to the exterior covering. What’s Inside an Innerspring Mattress? As mentioned above, there are two types of innerspring mattresses: one that individually pockets every spring, and one that lays the springs out in a more open manner. These typically are wrapped in some sort of cotton blend on the outside for general comfort, while the coils themselves are used for support. One thing to note is that more coils does not necessarily mean a more comfortable bed. More coils does mean a reduction in motion transfer, though, which can be nice for those that share a bed with a spouse or partner. What’s Inside a Foam Mattress? The insides of a foam mattress typically are constructed of layers of foam, with the top layer being the one meant to provide the majority of the support. There are all kinds of different types of foam ranging from hard to soft, but the layers of foam all work together to make sleepers comfortable and relieve stress on major pressure points. Unlike innerspring mattresses, which require extra materials to hold all the coils together, foam mattresses really just need an outside layer of material primarily for aesthetic purposes. What’s Inside a Hybrid Mattress? Hybrid mattresses have become increasingly popular, combining an innerspring base for support and a layer or two

What is the Best Mattress for Back Sleepers?

by Shop Manager @ Ben's

Everybody has a unique way of sleeping, but in a general sense there are side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers, each of which offers its own plethora of variations. It should not come as any sort of surprise that certain types of mattresses are better for certain types of sleeping positions, but sleeping on one’s back creates a specific set of physical circumstances that calls for a very specific type of mattress. Four Things Back Sleepers Need in a New Mattress So what are these circumstances? The following are some mattress features that back sleepers should be looking for when shopping for a new bed here at Ben’s: #1 Medium-Firm to Firm While firmness is a personal preference, the science proves that sleeping on your back requires significant support to the areas where your body meets the mattress. The lower back especially requires a significant amount of support, and mattresses that are too soft allow your body to sink into the material so that your spine actually bows while you sleep. Medium-firm mattresses provide good support to your spine, and those with more serious back pain should consider purchasing a firmer mattress to ensure proper support. #2 Materials Here at Ben’s, we offer a number of medium-firm and firm mattress in all sorts of different materials, from foam to coil to hybrid, but typically the best materials for back sleepers are the foam and hybrid options. While memory foam is extremely popular (and increasingly affordable) right now, poly foam mattresses can be great for the back as well. Whatever material you choose, you want a top comfort layer of about two inches to ensure your back receives the correct amount of cradling for a good night’s sleep. #3 Cooling Properties Another feature to consider in a mattress of any material is cooling properties. Back sleepers tend to trap more heat into their mattresses, meaning beds with built-in measures to counteract that that heat can ensure the bed is a lot more comfortable all night long. Usually, these features increase air flow, which can cool down a sleeper and perhaps even allow you to save some money on air conditioning bills that come from some sleepers dealing with all the heat trapped underneath their covers. We have a number of mattresses with cooling properties here at Ben’s, so ask your sales associate for help in finding one that works for you. #4 Affordability Of course, cost is a major consideration for a mattress, too, regardless of what kind of sleeper you are. We offer several excellent mattresses that deliver cost effective comfort as well as any mattress store in Atlanta, GA. Visit any of our 14 stores or shop online

Minor and major sleep disorders are becoming an increasingly common occurrence in modern times, especially prevalent in individuals who have for whatever reason failed to embrace healthy and stress-free lifestyles. It’s important to note that the most common sleep disorders doesn’t necessarily mean lack of sleep, it can also mean too much of it, or alternatively could be neither, but instead something that occurs during slumber that isn’t classed as a normal sleeping habit such as excessive snoring. How to Choose Between a Twin and Full-Size Mattress

by Cullie Burris @ Ben's

Customers often ask us about whether or not they should purchase a king size mattress or a queen size mattress, but there is another debate in mattress sizes that exists for single sleepers. There are some key differences between a twin size mattress and a full-size mattress, and while both have their fair share of positive qualities, deciding on which one to purchase usually comes down to a matter of taste. Of course, one has to be familiar with the differences in order to to choose, which is where an exploration of these mattresses’ differences can come in handy. The following are some things to consider when deciding between a twin and a full-size mattress: Size The most obvious difference between the two mattresses is the size. At 54 inches in width, a full-size mattress actually is 15 inches wider than a twin, which is 39 inches across. While that’s plenty big for a single sleeper, a full-size bed also can be amenable for more than one person if the need requires it. Two children, for example, could share a full mattress rather comfortably. On the other hand, while 54 inches can accommodate two adults, it can be a bit of a tight fit depending on how those adults are accustomed to sleeping. Conversely, a full bed will feel more spacious for one person, especially if they have been used to sleeping in a twin. As the larger option, a full is a little more diverse for both single and double occupancy, but twin beds are perfectly appropriate for individual sleepers of all ages, as well. The Room So why would anybody choose the smaller twin mattress if the full-size one is larger and more accommodating? For starters, a smaller bedroom might not have the space to fit a full-size bedroom set comfortably. In order for a full-sized bed not to dominate the floor space in a room, it really needs to be ten feet by ten feet or larger. Anything smaller than that, and a twin-size mattress will be a better fit, allowing homeowners to fit other furniture items in the room, such as a dresser, bookshelf, or writing desk. Cost Not only that, but twin mattresses also are more affordable. To be fair, moving up to full-sized mattress is not that much of a difference, especially considering how often these beds are used and how long people own them, but for those on a tighter budget, the lower price of the twin beds may be a deciding factor. Even the accessories for twin beds, which include sheets, comforter sets, and mattress pads, are less expensive for twin mattresses, and that also can help customers decide on a size.

Soft Mattresses vs. Firm Mattresses: What to Know

by Shop Manager @ Ben's

Humans spend approximately a third of their lives in bed. That’s why it is so important to ensure that we are comfortable once we find ourselves underneath the covers, ready and eager for a good night’s sleep. Sleeping preferences and patterns differ from person to person. But what goes into our preferences for sort or firm mattresses? There are pros and cons to each, depending on a sleeper’s anatomy and personal comfort. Soft Mattresses Without really knowing the advantages and disadvantages of either, the terms “soft” and “firm” sure make it sound like a soft mattress would be a whole lot more comfortable, but this isn’t necessarily always the case. Soft, plush mattresses can be pretty comfortable, though, especially for older individuals who may deal with joint pain and back problems, as well as for side sleepers who curl up into the fetal position to sleep. For the most part, though, it generally is agreed that soft mattresses are less likely to provide many sleepers with the support they need. Soft mattresses actually can push a spine out of alignment in some cases, and without that initial firmness the mattress can grow even softer over time. Not only that, but softer mattresses are, on average, more expensive, so unless a sleeper has deep-seeded mattress preferences or specific back and joint problems, there may be ways to find a more comfortable mattress for a more affordable price. Firm Mattresses Here at Ben’s, the overwhelming majority of the mattresses that we sell fall in the range of medium to firm. These mattresses offer a number of benefits for our customers. For starters, firmer mattresses typically force sleepers into a neutral spine position, which keeps their bodies straighter and generally offers more spinal support. They also reduce pressure on the circulatory system, which allows blood to flow better throughout the body, as well as the respiratory system, which makes breathing easier and therefore delivers oxygen more easily throughout the body. Modern sleep science has done exhaustive research on these types of things and found that firmer mattresses are just flat-out better for nighttime and daytime comfort because they force your bones to support your weight while your sleep rather than your muscles. This keeps those muscles from getting sore and allows for better circulation, and while a firmer mattress might feel a bit odd at first to someone accustomed to a softer bed, the human body adapts quickly and, over time, there is sure to be a noticeable difference in the quality of sleep you get. At the end of the day, which mattress a customer chooses comes down to their personal tastes, but in a general sense we do not recommend buying mattresses

4 Reasons You Should Always Use a Boxspring

by Shop Manager @ Ben's

Because mattress sets are considered a major purchase for the majority of American consumers, we get a lot of questions here at Ben’s about whether the addition of box spring actually is necessary. Many people wonder whether or not they actually need the box spring for their new mattress to function properly, but the answer to this question never is a straight “yes” or a “no.” The reality lies in the gray area. The simplest answer we can give is that the need for a box spring depends entirely on the type of mattress and the type of bed. One universal truth is that a mattress does need to lay atop a hard, flat surface, making a boxspring an ideal option. Platform beds work, too, and though not aesthetically pleasing to most, some individuals place their mattress directly on the floor. Though box springs are not a mandatory addition to purchasing a mattress there are several reasons that make them worth the initial cost up front. Here are four reasons you should use a boxspring: Warranties Sometimes Require Box springs Most manufactures require that a mattress be supported by a box spring, at least if a customer is planning on filing a warranty claim at any point. It makes sense; these mattresses were designed to work at peak function in congress with these box springs, so if something goes wrong with a bed that was not being used in the manner the manufacturer intended, why would they be obligated to honor the claim? Some Two-Sided Mattresses Need the Support While many newer mattresses include all the built-in support a sleeper needs to be comfortable and get a good night’s rest, there are certain styles of two-sided mattresses that still require a box spring for ultimate support. If it is the type of mattress that can be flipped, it still needs a box spring, largely because support is why those box springs were invented in the first place. The Added Height Makes Getting in and out of Bed Easier Some people love their platform beds, but they also are quite a bit lower to the ground, which can make it harder to get in and out of bed. This may be no big deal for spring chickens, but older individuals who struggle with this daily act may prefer a box spring if only to lay down and rise up with relative ease every morning and every night. Your Bed May Need One for Aesthetic Reasons Finally, a raised bed flat-out looks better on most bedroom sets, filling the room a little more and making it feel more homey. A bed that is low to the floor can create a cavernous sensation

How to Buy a Mattress with Bad Credit

by Shop Manager @ Ben's

Even at a budget mattress store like Ben’s, a new bed can be outside of the financial means of a family that doesn’t necessarily have a large amount of money on-hand to spend on an improved night’s sleep. For this reason, Ben’s offers financing for customers to help spread out the cost of the mattress over time. Five Tips for Buying a Mattress with Bad Credit Of course, anybody that ever has bought anything on credit knows that the better the credit score, the more desirable the terms, and people with bad credit may even have had experiences where they were not offered financing at all because their scores were so low. Lenders see bad credit scores as a liability in terms of recouping a loan, so it can be hard to finance an item if you have an undesirable score. The good news is that Ben’s offers financing to all types of buyers.  If you are considering purchasing a mattress and you have bad credit, consider the following tips before delving into financing a new mattress or bedroom set: Clean Up Your Credit If you know the time is coming to purchase a new bed, perhaps consider delaying the purchase by a few months to clean up your score a bit. This might mean paying off past-due accounts, disputing credit report errors, and adding any positive information you can to your credit report. This could potentially boost your score enough to make financing a little easier and more cost effective. Don’t Make It Worse Even if you can’t do much to clean up your score, you can ensure that you don’t make it worse in the meantime. Pay everything on time and avoid starting any new credit cards or taking on any other new financing obligations. If you can steer clear of tax liens, debt collections, and late payments, you’ll have a better chance at getting desirable financing terms for your mattress. Expect Slightly Higher Interest Rates It is no secret that the best interest rates typically are reserved for those with better credit. While you may still be able to get a loan with a less-than-desirable credit score, you should expect to have a higher rate than the best advertised deals. Read the Fine Print Beyond that, sometimes financing can come with penalties if the financing isn’t paid off in the agreed-upon time frame. Knowing those types of items, as well as the exact terms of the loan itself, are important in ensuring you get the financing you need without further burdening yourself or worsening your credit somewhere down the line. Understand Your Budget The bottom line in all of this is that it’s important to understand just

Four Reasons You Should Finance New Furniture

by Shop Manager @ Ben's

By the standards of most American consumers, purchasing a new bedroom set or even just a new mattress is a major purchase. Knowing this, and knowing how many people in need of new furniture do not have the cash on hand to pay for things in full the day of purchase, it only makes sense that we would offer generous financing here at Ben’s. While many individuals are able to pay for their furniture over time using their personal credit card, that often comes with significant interest rates. Financing through us, though, offers convenience, simplicity, and more money left in our customers’ pockets. When shopping for new furniture at Ben’s, whether you are shopping online or in-store, consider the following things when possibly financing a purchase: You Can Pay for Furniture Over Time The biggest advantage to financing a bedroom set or a new mattress is that you do not have to pay for everything up front. These purchases can amount to thousands of dollars depending on how many items you are buying, and with generous loan terms we are able to give our customers more time to make several smaller payments instead of one big one. Not everybody can take a four-digit hit to their checking account at once, but we offer flexible payment plans to spread out the financial burden. You Won’t Have to Pay Interest Even better news is that these financing terms often come with zero interest, which means there is no cost to the customer for spreading these payments out over time. Unlike credit cards, which tack on interest from day one, the Synchrony accounts we use here at Ben’s allow for spaced-out payments that effectively work the same way as cash. You Don’t Have to Have Established Credit While having good credit is ideal when financing something, at Ben’s we do not require that customers have established credit to take advantage of financing. There are some stipulations for applications with no credit, including a required down payment in-store, proof of employment, and valid state identification. This actually can be a great way to build credit for those getting started, and you get a new bedroom set and mattress in the bargain, too! You Can Apply In-Store In some instances, consumers need to get pre-approval for loans at banks or credit unions before even setting foot into a showroom, but that’s not how things work here at Ben’s. You can apply for financing and get approved in-store the day you’re ready to buy, making it incredibly easy to space out your payments for a big bedroom set purchase. While getting a new bed is really exciting, figuring out how to pay for it isn’t always.

How Often Should You Flip Your Mattress?

by Shop Manager @ Ben's

For almost as long as there have been mattresses, there has been a need to flip and rotate those mattresses to ensure that they operate at peak performance and maintain their support. There is a reason that the common recommendation for buying a new mattress is every seven or eight years, and it has everything to do with how the human body leaves an impression in a mattress, regardless of how much it costs or what it is made of. Despite all of that, the newest mattresses are often are made in such a way that they should not be flipped at all. With customized layers arranged in a very specific way to provide optimal comfort and relieve stress on pressure points, flipping a mattress would mean sleeping on a rather uncomfortable, unintended surface. Yes, things are changing, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Rotating Mattresses Has Replaced Flipping Mattresses The only mattresses that really require flipping are innerspring mattresses that do not have a pillowtop on one side. Frankly, there are not a lot of manufacturers that sell those types of mattresses anymore, and here at Ben’s we certainly do not sell any that fall into that category. However, those that have not purchased a new mattress in the last few years may still have the old design and may still require a good old-fashioned mattress flip once every few months. Just because most mattresses no longer require rotation, however, does not mean that people can just plop their new mattresses onto their beds and then never touch them again. These days, certain types of mattresses perform better for a longer duration if they are rotated according to an appropriate schedule. What Mattresses Benefit From Rotation? Rotating a mattress is not particularly challenging, but it is worth knowing whether or not owners should be devoting their time and energy to doing it. All of the mattresses at Ben’s perform better from rotation, as they all are either memory foam, innerspring, or a hybrid of the two. Certain other brands that are designed to remain stationary forever do not need the occasional 180-degree spin, but the mattresses that we sell all will. How Often Should You Rotate Your Mattress? The real answer to this question will depend on which specific mattress you ultimately purchase, but the general consensus is that most mattresses will perform better over time if they are rotated once every three to 12 months. We suggest Googling your mattress once you get it home to get a better sense of a schedule for it, but once you know, get into your online calendar and set reminders to make sure you are not forgetting to do it.

Where to Buy an Affordable Bedroom Set in Atlanta

by Shop Manager @ Ben's

Ben’s Mattress & Furniture is a leading retailer in Atlanta’s mattress and furniture industry. In fact, here at Ben’s, we offer a number of truly excellent mattresses and bedroom sets capable of fitting any budget. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to get a better night’s sleep, and here in the Atlanta area, it’s hard to think of a better place to go shopping for new bedroom furniture. Three Tips for Buying an Affordable Bedroom Set in Atlanta Once you have decided to shop at Ben’s in search of a better night’s sleep or a more fashionable bedroom, the following tips can ensure that you make the most of your trip to one of our 14 Atlanta-area locations: #1 Find a Great Pairing Between Bedroom Set & Mattress There are several excellent bedroom sets available in our showroom, all of which start at prices well below $1,000 and include combinations of bedframes, headboards, footboards, dressers and mirrors. The Louis Philippe III Cherry Bedroom Set, for example, is a sleigh style bed in beautiful warm cherry wood, while the Fenbrook Bedroom Set and offers a darker wood and a more traditional look, and the Carlton Bedroom Set offers leather aesthetic flourishes on the headboard and footboard. Choosing the right style and adding a comfortable, affordable mattress is a great way to start your new bedroom right here at Ben’s. #2 Choose the Right Size Remember to have a good sense of the size of the bedroom before making any new purchase. If your room can’t accommodate a king-size bed, then consider a queen or full-size mattress instead. Couples typically prefer the larger sizes, but make sure you have a sense of just how much furniture you can fit in the room where you sleep. #3 Consider Current Bedroom Furniture Trends Mid-Century Modern style furniture is a big hit right now, which is why our Barzini and Serenity bedroom sets are a great option for those looking to take advantage of what’s trendy. We also have seen minimalistic trends in some bedroom furniture that strips away a lot of the more baroque flourishes in favor of something a little plainer and simpler. Several of our furniture sets are more understated for those that prefer something a little less ostentatious. If you have any questions about any of the terrific beds that we sell here at Ben’s, simply stop by or give us a call and we’ll happily walk you through the process of getting everything you need at a price you can appreciate. We even offer financing for those that would rather pay off for their mattresses and bedroom furniture over time. There are many possibilities here in terms of

Try Raising Your Glutathione Levels Naturally for Better Sleep

by hello@slumbr.com (Slumbr) @ Slumbr

A little nighttime reading

Try Raising Your Glutathione Levels Naturally for Better Sleep

A hot topic in wellness is the antioxidant glutathione and the myriad of benefits it has. See how glutathione can also be the key to better sleep.

A new study has revealed that more and more Americans are not getting enough sleep. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three adults don’t get enough sleep, and 34.8% of American adults are getting less than seven hours of sleep - the minimum length of time adults should rest to reduce the risk of obesity, stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.

To be able to get enough sleep, most people need to have a good bedtime routine, a comfortable mattress, supportive and high-quality pillows, and perhaps a natural sleep aid to promote a peaceful slumber. Many people have discovered that glutathione, a natural antioxidant, can help to get a good night’s rest, and the good news is that it’s quite simple to increase your glutathione levels to achieve better sleep.

What Happens When You Don’t Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough sleep is important for your overall health and wellness. When you’re sleep deprived, your body’s ability to fight off illness is compromised. Moreover, lack of sleep can lead to cognition issues, and brain functions such as memory, decision-making, reaction time, and problem-solving are all negatively affected. You’ll also find that you tend to forget things if you don’t take measures to get a good night’s sleep.

What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is an antioxidant that is naturally produced by the body to combat free radicals. Antioxidants help to strengthen and repair the cell walls, which can result in better and younger-looking skin. It also prevents cancerous tumors from forming in the body and stops DNA damage in its tracks.

While you can get glutathione supplements in health food stores, glutathione can also be found in certain fruits and vegetables such as asparagus, potatoes, peppers, avocados, broccoli, squash, tomatoes, grapefruit, apples, peaches, oranges, and melons.

How Glutathione Helps Promote Sleep
Experts have found that high levels of glutathione in the body can help you sleep better. In one study, it was found that those who had increased levels of glutathione were able to fall asleep easier at night and wake up refreshed in the morning. Moreover, it was found that the body is able to naturally produce more glutathione during sleep.

How to Boost Your Glutathione Levels
Your body’s stores of glutathione can be greatly diminished if you’re constantly stressed or if you’re exposed to tobacco smoke. Drinking alcohol can also deplete the glutathione in your body. If you want to get enough sleep, there are certain things that you can do to raise your glutathione levels.

Consume glutathione-rich foods
Apart from the fruits and vegetables which were mentioned earlier, you should also consume dairy products to boost your glutathione levels. Drinking non-pasteurized milk that contains no hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics is a great way to increase the glutathione in your body.

Get moving
Exercise is another natural way to increase your glutathione levels. Just 30 minutes of running, walking, or jogging can enhance your body’s defenses against free radicals. Add some strength training exercises at least three times a week to get the optimum benefits from your workouts.

Increase your melatonin intake
Melatonin increases the glutathione levels in the tissues of your liver, brain, and muscles. Melatonin can be naturally found in tart cherries, hummus, bananas, nuts, teas (chamomile or peppermint), and fish (cod, salmon, tuna, or halibut).

Getting enough sleep should be a priority as all the vitamins and supplements in the world cannot replace the benefits of a good night’s sleep. Try increasing your glutathione levels naturally, and make it a point to practice good sleep habits for your health and wellbeing.

Why Good Sleep Matters So Much

by Lindsay S @ Choose Mattress

We humans spend about one-third of our lives asleep. This one-third greatly impacts the quality of the other two-thirds of our lives. Many things contribute to a good night’s rest, and your mattress lies at the foundation. According to WebMD, when it comes to sleep quality, “to get it right, you’ve got to start with the basics and your mattress is the first building block to a restful slumber.” After all, if you’re tossing and turning all night, struggling to get your body into a pain-free position, your sleep quality will be poor, and your wellness will suffer. The Importance
