Conversion Progress: Week 5

Conversion Progress: Week 5

by Amelia Bartlett @ Blog - slow rolling home

While we love the rain and all that it brings, it's really slowing down our parade! Day after day this week, it's rained so hard that we couldn't work with any windows open, making for stuffy mornings and short afternoons.  Our experimentation with rivet-removal is going (frustratingly) well, as we're seeing that the best course of action will be to use power tools the whole way. Yes, we did attempt to do this by hand, one of us punching the center out and the other using a chisel to remove the head. This resulted in a few bruised thumbs and bad moods, to say the least.

Organic Mattress under $1000 - Organic Housewife

Organic Mattress under $1000 - Organic Housewife

Organic Housewife

THE single most common question I get is “What is the safest organic mattress?”.  That is an excellent question but it also carries a hefty price tag of at least $3,000.  If a mattress you are considering costs less, there is probably a reason.  Some or several components are either toxic, known to off-gas or are soaked in carcinogenic flame retardants.  To read why conventional mattresses are toxic and an incredibly budget friendly solution for an inexpensive, solid wood crib bed frame and an all organic crib mattress and/or toddler bed, click here! A cheap, budget friendly twin/queen/king size certified organic mattress for under $1,000?  It simply does not exist in the marketplace.  However, if you get creative, my process can be repeated for a twin size bed and even an adult size bed with slight modifications. $600 Twin size organic latex mattress OR $800 Queen or King size organic latex mattress The reality is, kids like to snuggle with mom, so the adult bed should probably also be organic and non-toxic!  This is the ‘interior’ of the $3,799 Savvy Rest Serenity king size mattress that I have in my home, it consists of a cotton/wool ‘case’ with a zipper closure and three layers …

Zero-VOC Sheathing & Subfloor

by noreply@blogger.com (Corinne) @ My Chemical-Free House

Here is an overview of low-VOC and zero-VOC sheathing and subflooring options.

Structural Plywood

Structural plywood (Softwood Plywood - SWPW) can be used for exterior sheathing, roof decking and subfloors. It is made with phenol-formaldehyde glue (PF) in the US and Canada.

The Rate of Formaldehyde Offgassing in PF Plywood

"Formaldehyde levels in this test chamber were well below 0.1 parts per million (ppm) in air from all tests of fresh panels, and emissions rapidly approached zero as the panels aged. In fact, the levels were so low and so close to the "background" levels in the test chamber that is was not possible to measure them accurately." Source APA

The rate in outdoor air is about 0.0002 - 0.006 parts per million (ppm) in rural and suburban outdoor air. Source

While 0.1 ppm is high for someone sensitive, the fact that the panels rapidly offgass should make them tolerable for someone with MCS. I would suggest testing plywood that is a few months old.

A Note on Purebond Formaldehyde-Free Plywood

Purebond plywood is not rated structurally or moisture-wise for sheathing, subfloor or decking. I have spoken to the company and they don't recommend it used for this purpose though I do see people building with this product. I am not sure the consequences of building your subfloor or decking with a non-structural plywood.

Non-Wood Options:

Exterior Sheathing

A non-wood option is Georgia-Pacific DensGlass, which is around 3 times the cost of OSB. It is very low VOC; they are going for GreenGuard certification. It is also a lot more mould resistant than OSB or plywood. Make sure with all materials it fits the codes where you live (in terms of high winds and earthquakes). Make sure it is also compatible with your exterior finish.

MgO board is now starting to be used as exterior sheathing. Another zero-VOC option. It is heavy, structural and more expensive than plywood.

Rigid foam can also be used as exterior sheathing without any ply or OSB. The rate of XPS offgassing is very low, but it does contain a flame retardant. The other option is Polyiso. The Johns Manville brand does not contain a flame retardant. Here is some info on how to brace when using rigid foam as sheathing. This is not structural and should be checked against local codes.

Another structural option is Rewall which is made of recycled beverage cartons and cups shredded and compressed. It claims zero-VOCs. It is paper-faced.

Subflooring

It is possible to use structural cementitious sheeting board (MgO) as a zero-VOC option however when I did this in my tiny house I needed additional framing support underneath. It worked out well for me. Here is an example of the support you need underneath. This is probably only suitable in a tiny house.

For those who can't tolerate wood it is possible to pour a concrete upper floor.

Roof Sheathing (Decking)

Purlins or skip sheathing can be used as an alternate form of roofing which eliminates the need for solid sheathing. This will only work with certain roof types (metal vented attic, in some cases cedar).

Pre-Plywood Options

In the days before plywood, solid wood was usually used:

For exterior sheathing, 1-by lumber laid diagonally was used. This is not an airtight option so humidity and energy issues should be considered. Make sure to use housewrap. Consider double sided housewrap tape so that you get more of an air barrier.

For subfloors, 1-by subfloor were laid diagonally to the floor joints. The subfloor could be planks or tongue and groove. Here is a little more info and a pic of planks. This is a zero-VOC option but it will cost you quite a bit more. If you use this method make sure you use a subfloor adhesive otherwise you will have a very creaky floor. Liquid Nails is the lowest VOC option I have seen at less than 20g/l, but I find Almighty Adhesive to be more tolerable.

For decking, 1x decking butted up to each other can be used. This is how roofs were built before plywood or OSB. This will allow for many types of roofing types over it.

How Green Cleaning Can Change Your Home

Let's talk about green cleaning. Every home has on average 62 different toxic chemicals present at any one time. This means we are constantly touching, breathing in and ingesting these […]

5 Healthy & Eco-Friendly Ways To Reduce Plastic In Your Everyday Life

by Courtney Jay Biebl @ The Good Trade

Plastic does not biodegrade and plastic gives off toxic chemicals that when ingested or worn, can have long lasting consequences. We're beginning the quest to open our minds to alternatives, in both what we use and what we throw away. If we ask more questions and look deeper, we can change our approach to plastic use and chase the negative impact we may have on our environment and ourselves.

Mould Testing Overview - Pros and Cons of Different Methods

by noreply@blogger.com (Corinne) @ My Chemical-Free House

First I want to talk about the most reliable test which is how you feel in the house compared to other places. Unfortunately this is not always as simple as it sounds to execute. There are different ways to undertake this experiment. The simplest way is to stay in your backyard in a tent or all metal trailer without bringing any possessions from the house. The most obvious complication here is that you will need to go inside to use the washroom unless you get a porta potty! You may also be so sensitive that the house has contaminated the air outside (I have experienced being outside of a house and being able to smell the mould).

The next option would be to stay somewhere where other people recovering from mould illness (and MCS) have felt better. This could be a campground, KOA cabin, Airbnb or other rental. I have a lot more details on this in my post on the Locations Effect and Mould Sabbatical.

Once you have gotten "clear" and done some recovering you might be wondering how do you test a house to find out if it's good? Some people can walk into a house and know if it's good for them. But even the most sensitive people usually need to request to spend 3 nights trialling the house. This is not always an option, but you should ask. Usually people sleep better in a house that is mould free, but me and other CIRS patients have found that there is some mould that puts you into a zombie sleep where you sleep more (and then get sicker). So even a three-night test can be tricky.

It is also good to verify the house is safe with mould testing. The most common test for CIRS (mould patients) is the ERMI. It is highly recommended by Shoemaker certified doctors as the test to use. The range of the ERMI scores goes from minus 10 to positive 20. You need a score or 2 or lower to be treated and recover from mould illness according to Dr. Shoemaker.

Other types of mould tests can also be useful. A tape lift will get you definitive results on visible mould. I look at the options below. This is a very simple overview just to give you the general idea of what is out there in a way that is not overwhelming - you may want to look more into each of these different methods. Please note that my sources were biased towards mould advocates Lisa Petrison from Paradigm Change, Greg Muske from Biotoxin Journey, Dr. Shoemaker and Cheryl Ciecko, an architect who specialises in mould. I have attempted to cross-check their information. However, going with information from the companies that do house inspections can be biased and contradictory. (All sources at end of post, which you can read for more detail).

ERMI

Cons

- Doesn’t work well in brand new houses.

- You need dust that has settled for a while (wait 4-6 weeks to re-test an area).

- Having very little dust or a high amount of dust can skew results.

- Having a high amount of outside dirt inside can skew results. Having high or low outdoor spores counts can skew results.

- May not be an even distribution of spores throughout the house if mould is only coming from one place and the house is large.

- It is known to miss major mould problems when people are very sick in their house. Similarly, after a remediation, a CIRS patient can still be sick from the mycotoxins left behind despite a low score.

Pros

-"Only the ERMI and HERTSMI have been associated with sequential activation of innate immune responses, not air testing.” Dr. Shoemaker. Meaning it is the only test that he found that is consistently in line with lab results for CIRS, despite its drawbacks.

- Vacuum method can pick of heavy spores like Stachy and the Swifer method can also be used to pick up places with accumulated dust that has been there for 4 months. John Banta always tries to use the vacuum method over swipe method.

- It's pretty affordable at $300. You do it yourself. The lab recommended is Mycometrics.

HERTSMI-2

-Similar to ERMI but tests for a handful of moulds most commonly associated with water damaged buildings. It is cheaper than ERMI. I would go for the full ERMI and you can still calculate your HERTSMI value from that. Shoemaker certified doctors will consider your HERTSMI score as well as ERMI score.

Tape Lifts

Cons

- You need to have visible mould.

- It assists you with what type of mould it is and not how widespread the problem is.

Pros

- Tells you what kind of mould you have when you have a visible sample.

- Allows you to know if this is a toxic mould.

- You can do it yourself.

- It's the cheaper way to test for visible mould.

I used this DIY Tape Lift to test a few areas in a house I go into often. The results came back showing me what type of mould it was. It confirmed that the mould was one that is toxic that comes from water damage. Though you need to get a decent amount of mould on the tape otherwise your results will just show scattered pieces.

Spore Traps (Air Test)

Cons

- Needs to be taken near the source, so you have to know where the source is.

- Shoemaker says: "The industry standard of sampling the air for spores is not an acceptable substitute for many reasons. One of the main limitations is that over 99% of the particles that carry the inflammagens from water damaged buildings are smaller than 3 microns. Spore traps can only detect particles that are larger than 3 microns and therefore, miss over 99% of the inflammagens.”

- Spore traps identify round, intact spores. So they will not catch evidence of past problem that have left mycotoxins.

- Can miss/underreport certain heavy species like stachy.

- Expensive.

Pros

- The test is more standardised than tape lifts, swabs, cultures, and mould-dogs, they claim.

- It is the most widely used mould test.

- You can compare inside and outside air.

Dishes

Cons

- Hard to know where to place the dish to get capture the mould if you don’t know where the mould is coming from.

- Doesn’t get you an accurate relative reading since some mould is harder to catch and some proliferate faster in the dish than others.

- Stachy is a slow grower compared to other moulds in the dish.

Pros

- Can be used in multiple places to compare and for general observation.

- Can give you more details on the exact type of mould than other tests.

- Inexpensive.

- John Banta does a culture of the dust used for ERMI to compare and get more details

Here is one you can do yourself.

Mould Dogs

Cons

- Can only detect a handful of moulds.

- Hard to know if they are well trained, look for good references of the company.

- They can’t tell you if it’s high amount of mould or a trace from after a remediation.

- The dog can only sniff in areas where they can reach.

Pros

- They are good at finding the source if it is within their reach.

- The dog can smell both live and dead mould.

- You can pinpoint the area where you need to do further testing.

VOC testing

Cons

- There is controversy around the accuracy of this testing.

- Not widely used.

Pros

- Test the levels of mycotoxins and other VOCs in the air.

Here is a company that does this kind of testing that is recommended. It goes to an AIHA accredited lab.

Children’s shoes NOT made in China. High quality and comfortable options.

by Anele @ Organic Housewife

I like my products as organic, as natural and as non-toxic as possible.  This is one area I am forced to compromise.  There are no perfectly non-toxic shoe options for children.  The compromise is comfortable children’s shoes not made in China. It is that time of season again… Time to get new shoes for the kids.  About two or three times a year we go through this process. Tedious and very tiring but it has to be done. Here’s what I do.  Get Amazon Prime membership.  Trust me, you need it.  One of the perks is free two-day shipping and free returns on eligible items.  While I do not like to overuse the ‘free-returns’ option; kids shoe-shopping-season is when I take full advantage.  I usually order 5-6 pairs for each child and keep what is up to my standard.   How to get quality fit for a shoe With this simple and very accurate shoe sizer you can determine current shoe size and I usually order 1 size up.  Chances are, one foot is longer (larger size) than the other so I add 1 size up to that foot…  The shoe will typically last all summer and early fall in the […]

Organic Mattress under $1000

by Anele @ Organic Housewife

THE single most common question I get is “What is the safest organic mattress?”.  That is an excellent question but it also carries a hefty price tag of at least $3,000.  If a mattress you are considering costs less, there is probably a reason.  Some or several components are either toxic, known to off-gas or are soaked in carcinogenic flame retardants.  To read why conventional mattresses are toxic and an incredibly budget friendly solution for an inexpensive, solid wood crib bed frame and an all organic crib mattress and/or toddler bed, click here! Our Birth Plan

Our Birth Plan

by Amanda Morgan @ Blog - Healthy Wifestyle

In photo: Breastfeeding Pillow, Boppy // Newborn Onesie, Nordstrom (one similar)

Hello, loves! Thank you for being patient with me over the past few weeks. Blogging has definitely taken a back seat as I prepare for baby, and my schedule is a little off whack.

I’ll also be taking maternity leave until the New Year, so my last blog will be November 7th (unless baby comes before then!).

There are so many pregnancy-related blogs that I had intended on writing, but many of them had been done before. Hospital bag contents, prepping for labor, etc. Instead, I decided to give you the real deal with our actual birth plan, which you can view below.

Labor and delivery are very personal choices. I want you to remember that as you read through what Ryan and I decided as a couple.

It was extremely important to me to understand exactly what I was getting into before labor, so I read plenty of books and did research. I couldn’t be one of those women who just showed up at the hospital with my bags and trusted everyone around me. I knew I needed more control, so I really put in the time and effort to make myself feel comfortable.

I shared a post on Instagram the other day about choices. Many women believe they don’t have a choice when it comes to things that are recommended to them by their doctors during pregnancy or by their nurses in the hospital during delivery. You absolutely have a choice, and should always feel empowered to ask questions and lean on your doctors or midwives for support. If you feel that you are being pushed into something you don’t want to do, then it might be time to look for a new practice.

There have been many instances where I did things differently, but I’ll share two examples. My doctor recommended the gestational diabetes test at 28 weeks and the flu vaccine at some point in my third trimester. I explained I wasn’t comfortable with the flu vaccine (both Ryan and I haven’t gotten it ourselves in over a decade) and I knew the gestational diabetes test would make me sick from all of the sugar at one time (I had passed out once in pregnancy and didn’t feel like going through it again!). She supported both decisions, and for the diabetes test I simply did a finger prick on an empty stomach.

Obviously, these choices won’t work for everyone, but they worked for me and for us. Do your research and follow your intuition!

Below is a summary of our birth plan and brief explanations of why I made certain decisions. I’m totally up for questions or discussions in the comments below the blog, but please be kind. I would never judge anyone’s choices, and I hope mine won’t be judged either! :)

Enjoy darlings, and looking forward to reading your thoughts.

Love,
Amanda

FYI, our doula recommended that we bullet point our birth plan and keep it within one page so it’s actually read. I added a “my notes” section after each stage to explain things further for you. Here ya go!

Baby Morgan Birth Plan

We are planning for a natural birth, but are also open to possibilities knowing that there are things we cannot control in the birthing process. We would appreciate your support in this endeavor and can’t thank you enough!

People in the room and environment

  • We’ll be using Hypnobabies techniques
  • To keep the environment calm during hypnosis, I request low lights, quiet voices, and minimum interruptions
  • My husband Ryan and doula Dawn will be the only people present for labor and delivery (family will be in waiting room)

My notes: I’ve been practicing Hypnobabies for months and am looking forward to seeing how it goes. It’s a home study course that requires time and commitment. I’ll let you know if I believe it’s worth it after all is said and done!

First-stage labor

  • Coconut water during labor for hydration. May have honey and mashed banana in case of low blood sugar
  • Intermittent fetal monitoring is ideal (20 minutes per hour)
  • No routine IV—a saline lock is fine
  • Would like to avoid an amniotomy unless water is not fully broken and labor progression is slow. If this does not work and things are still moving slowly, we may be open to Pitocin after a discussion

My notes: I get low blood sugar if I don’t eat every few hours, so I put this in here even though I realize I’m not “allowed” to eat. I’ve heard the nurses don’t mind what they can’t see (ha!), so if I sneak in a snack here or there, all is fine! I also don’t want to be hooked up to a machine or the bed, so intermittent monitoring is a must—especially since I’m planning to labor naturally and will be moving around a lot. I’d like my water to break on its own, but am letting them know that I’m open to discussion depending on how labor progresses.

Second-stage labor

  • I would rather risk a tear than have an episiotomy
  • If I do end up getting an epidural, we would like to use the peanut ball (may be bringing our own) to avoid any intervention
  • If I require a c-section (even though we would like to avoid this at all costs), I would like my husband to be present during the operation. I would also require my doula or doctor to swab my vagina (a process they now call “seeding”) and place the gauze in a sterile container for immediately after baby is born, and rub said gauze on baby’s skin, mouth, nose, etc. to transfer essential microbiota that would be missed due to a c-section. Lastly, I would like to hold my baby right after the operation before exams.

My notes: I’ve been doing perineal massages since week 37, and am going to have Ryan or my doula hold a warm compress on my perineum as a I begin to push to help with tearing. I would rather tear naturally than be cut surgically, so this is important for them to know. My hospital uses peanut balls to help assist women who have had epidurals—sometimes dilation can stall if you’re simply sitting in the same position, but the peanut ball helps open up the pelvis and change your position to keep the momentum going. You can also ask your partner or nurse to hold your leg up while lying on your side. I got the idea for the last bullet point in a book I read called “Let Them Eat Dirt,” which is all about creating and maintaining a healthy microbiota for baby from birth. This is super important to me if a c-section is deemed necessary and I OK’d it with my doc.

Post-birth

  • No matter what the end result of labor, I would like to hold my baby right after birth skin to skin
  • I would like to wait at least one minute to cut the cord (or until stops pulsating)
  • Please postpone routine newborn procedures until we’ve held the baby for some time, at least an hour (including Vitamin K shot and eye treatment). No vaccinations will be administered at birth (Hep B).
  • I plan on breastfeeding

My notes: Delayed cord clamping is performed by most hospitals these days, but I wanted to make sure they waited at least one minute. I also desire to hold my baby right after birth and don’t want any interventions until we’ve had some bonding time. We decided against the Hep B vaccine but are doing the other procedures (I wasn’t a huge fan of these but Ryan was, so this was compromise for us).

Lacey's Birth Story

Lacey's Birth Story

by Amanda Morgan @ Blog - Healthy Wifestyle

November 22, 2017

I can’t believe my little Lacey is two weeks old. Everyone was right—the first two weeks are difficult. Figuring out how to keep a tiny human alive is no simple task! But alas, we’ve done it, with a little help from my mom and our night nurse. Woohoo!

I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to Lacey’s birth. I would describe the experience as “the plan that went according to plan unexpectedly.” You’ll know exactly what I mean once you read through the post!

If you read my birth plan, you know that I wanted to attempt a natural birth. I was hoping for little intervention and a calm and peaceful birthing experience. Here’s what really went down…

THE WATER BREAKING

My water broke around 5:00am on Wednesday, November 22nd. This was so exciting initially, because I knew in that moment our baby girl would be making her debut without me having to be induced the following Sunday. Lacey was 11 days late, and the clock was running out for her to make her way into this world without intervention.

Being induced isn’t the worst thing in the world, of course, but it wasn’t what I wanted. So my water breaking was a great sign of things to come. I also had decided to do two membrane sweeps—one the Friday prior (my mucous plug fell out the next day) and one the following Monday (my water broke less than 48 hours after this one). Lacey was born Wednesday evening. After trying nearly everything to get things moving, this was the one thing that did work. My doctor did the sweeps in a more gentle manner than most so I wasn’t in too much pain the next day. I would do it again in a heartbeat after seeing the results!

I called my Mom and my doula around 5:30am, and was told to try to get some rest. Yeah, right! I was too excited. I decided not to wake Ryan up knowing it would be a long day, then laid in bed until 6am. My contractions started around that time, but they were super manageable, around 10 minutes apart. I got up, showered, and made cupcakes for the nurses at the hospital. I woke Ryan up and he was so excited. We decided to just hang out and wait for things to evolve on their own.

THE MORNING

My contractions stayed at 10 minutes apart for a few hours. Again, these were pretty manageable—I would have to pause and breathe through them, but I was ready for these types of contractions. As the hours passed, I wondered what was happening. I would have contractions 7 minutes apart, then 20 minutes apart, and so on. They were completely sporadic for most of the morning.

THE AFTERNOON

At one point, I hadn’t had a contraction for 30 minutes. I called my doula because I was getting tired and really wanted to get the train moving. Ryan was also growing anxious, since my doctor said not to wait longer than six hours after my water broke to go to the hospital.

My doula recommended walking up and down the stairs while simultaneously doing lunges, along with cat/cow poses to get things flowing. The first time I walked up the stairs I had a contraction again. Ryan and I walked the stairs several times and alternated between several different positions, but it seemed my contractions were still in a funky 7-30-10 pattern and not making any sense.

Around 4pm, I decided to call the doctor since it was almost 12 hours after my water broke. Naturally, she wanted me to come in but told me not to rush. I decided to lay down while Ryan made himself dinner.

My body said hellllllll no to laying down and as soon as I hit my pillow, I had the worst contraction of the day. Like, debilitating-want-to-poop-and-throw-up-at-the-same-time type of contraction. I walked outside our bedroom and yelled down to Ryan saying, “Well, that’s not happening.”

THE EVENING

My Mom and Dad arrived and pushed me to go to the hospital. We started getting our things together and the contractions were growing stronger and more nauseating. I would have to completely stop what I was doing and either get on all fours or lean on our kitchen counter during them.

Things went from six to midnight REAL quick.

It was time to drive to the hospital around 5:45pm and from what I can remember, this was one of the worst parts of my labor. Being in the car during contractions is no fun! But we made it. I walked out of the car, went into the hospital and leaned on a poll during a contraction.

The woman at the valet stand just looked at me and said, “I’m not even going to ask how you’re doing!” and proceeded to grab a wheelchair to bring me up to Labor & Delivery.

Things start to get blurry at this point. They checked me as soon as we got there and guess what…I was 8 centimeters dilated! So listen up, ladies—don’t listen to that math they give you to wait until your contractions are 5-1-1 before you go to the hospital (especially if you want the drugs). Every body is different, and in my case, my contractions went all day and weren’t close together until VERY late in the game.

The nurse asked if I had a birth plan, and my Jersey self said, “F*ck the birth plan, give me the drugs!” My husband laughed and said to everyone, “This is the real Amanda, in case anyone was wondering.” It was an entertaining moment for everyone involved.

They hooked me up to some fluids to prep for the epidural. If you’ve had one, you know it takes time to get this situated. So within the 80 minutes it took for them to do this, have me sign the paperwork (which was a pathetic scribble on my part), and get the anesthesiologist in the room, I was 9.5 centimeters dilated. My body was ready to go!

I was doing some crazy moves at this point during the contractions. I would squat and breathe through them as my doula massaged my low back. The pain was so intense.

I remember at least five people surrounding me asking me what I wanted to do, but also suggesting I forgo the drugs because issues could arise from doing the epidural this late in the game. After several minutes, I decided to go at it all natural.

During those squats, I was already making grunting sounds, so my doctor and doula asked if it felt like I needed to push. I didn’t know what that sensation was supposed to feel like, but they checked me one last time and I was 10 centimeters dilated.

The next two hours (maybe a little less) were a total blur. I went from pushing on the toilet, to using the squat bar on the bed, to leaning over the bed. Lacey’s head was coming out, and it was time to really, really push. They had me on my side on the bed, holding up my top leg and pushing through every contraction. She was almost ready to come out, but my doula suggested I switch positions one more time to adjust her. I laid on my back with my legs spread apart, knees towards my armpits. During contractions, Ryan would lift my head up and the nurses would hold my knees.

At this point, I was sweating, exhausted, and could feel EVERYTHING. I was ready to get this baby out. In one contraction, my doctor counted down from 10 several times, and with those breaths, I pushed Lacey out completely with the loudest screams you could ever imagine. It’s funny, because after practicing Hypnobabies for months before her birth, I didn’t use the recordings at all. By the time we got to the hospital, I was in my own zone and the “peace” I longed for was out the window. It didn’t matter, because the experience went exactly as it should’ve.

It was like instant relief after she was born, but mentally, I was slightly traumatized. They put Lacey on my chest, but all I could concentrate on was what was going on “down there.” I pushed the placenta out, and it was time to stitch me up. The local anesthesia barely did anything because all of the nerves were so stimulated, so this part was almost as rough as her birth itself! Within a half hour, it was over, and I could finally concentrate on my baby girl.

I held Lacey and breastfed her for a bit before they took her away to do a few standard procedures like weigh her, Vitamin K shot, etc. We did everything by the book except the Hep B vaccine and her bath. We waited a few days to give her a bath and will be determining what to do about Hep B down the road.

Ryan and I ordered food and my parents came to meet Lacey. It was so amazing seeing my parents with their first grandchild. Those first few moments made that entire day well worth it.

THE AFTERMATH

I had a lot of trouble sleeping initially, both from the pain and the anxiety I was experiencing. Lacey’s birth was amazing but also slightly traumatizing. I had flashbacks at night for the first week! It took me several days to mentally feel normal again—outside of the regular exhaustion every woman experiences post-labor.

There is no right or wrong way to give birth, and it’s so important to listen to your body and do what works best for both you and baby! You can plan as much as you want, but always know that things will never go as planned and deviating is more the norm when it comes to labor and delivery.

As far as breastfeeding is concerned, I feel fortunate because feeding came relatively easily to Lacey and I. This was only after I started using a nipple shield that was provided by the hospital—before this, we struggled for a few days because I have flat nipples (maybe TMI but it’s true!). The shield doesn’t seem to bother her, and the only issue I have with it is the convenience factor. I’m working with a lactation consultant and we’ll be figuring out how to move forward soon.

Lacey is an amazing little girl who is already so alert and has a sweet personality. I can’t wait to share more of her with you!

Thank you so much for reading through this and for being a part of Healthy Wifestyle. I’m thrilled to be able to incorporate more motherhood pieces into my writing for the blog and look forward to your requests!

I’d love to hear your birth story below, or anything you’d like to share as it relates to your own experience or future experience of labor and delivery. Heart you all!

Xoxo,
Amanda

Best Natural and Organic Volumizing Mascara Reviews

by Anele @ Organic Housewife

The search for good non-toxic mascara began for me in 2011.  I was pregnant and instinctively knew I should be using better, organic or at least plant based non-toxic and natural products.  …This was way before the many bloggers and review sites available today.  And way before natural products were popular.  The choices were limited and information scarce. Pre-pregnancy and certainly pre-awareness, I used to frequent Sephora and one of my absolute favorite products was the Dior Show Black Out Mascara.  It did not clump, did not give me raccoon eyes, did not crumble and gave me Va-Va-Voom eye lashes. What more can a girl ask for?  An organic or a natural version of-course! Ten non-toxic mascaras later, I have finally found a comparable truly natural replacement to Dior Show!  Have no doubt, there are no green washers on my list; all are a variance of as natural as it gets. $229 All Organic Crib OR $209 All Organic Toddler Bed

by Anele @ Organic Housewife

I am talking about a cheap, truly non-toxic, solid wood bed frame and all certified organic mattress.  Yes it can be done on the tightest of budgets! $229 untreated, solid wood Crib AND a organic latex mattress OR $209 untreated, solid wood Toddler Bed AND a organic latex mattress One of the first and most common questions is “What is the best organic baby mattress?” An organic crib and mattress usually has a steep price tag.  I would know, I paid $800 for my solid-wood crib with a custom, zero VOC, non-toxic stain and $550 for a certified organic mattress.  I cringe even as I type it.  That is A LOT of money.  I wish I knew then what I know now. I just came back from an extended trip.  We stayed with relatives and had to get something for my young daughter to sleep in.  Without compromising on safety and toxicity, I put together a $229 all organic crib.  Yes, you read right, a solid wood crib with a GOLS certified latex mattress. The cheaper organic versions are usually made with coils that interfere with earths magnetic fields and in-home electric EMFs and really mess with our bodies.  Knowing EMF concerns I would […]
