What Might You Be Sleeping On?

by admin @ Thomasville Latex Mattress Natural Flex Blog

If you’re considering buying a new mattress but have been holding off because you don’t feel like spending the money and it doesn’t seem that important to you, here are some things for you to consider. Getting a good night’s sleep is an integral component to your health. Not only does top quality and quantity sleep improve your ability to restore and repair muscles and refresh your ability to think clearly and learn and remember efficiently, but when you fail to get the sleep you need you are actually doing considerable harm, raising your risk of a bevy of chronic conditions that can have a negative impact on your life. Diabetes two, obesity, depression, cardiovascular disease, increased blood pressure – all of these health risks have been associated with sleep deprivation, and having an uncomfortable, unsupportive mattress can contribute to your inability to get a good night’s sleep.

Thomasville Latex has just what you need

The fact is that you should replace your mattress every several years, with the exact amount of time depending upon the original quality of the mattress and your level of discomfort. If you are waking up feeling achy and sore in the morning, that’s your cue that you need to get on the stick and get yourself over to a mattress showroom. If you need any more urging, you might want to consider the following things that might be in your older mattress and impacting the quality of your sleep. These just may be the items that end up pushing you over the purchasing edge!

  • Bed bugs – Bed bugs have become a national issue. They’ve always been with us, but according to a report issued by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) in collaboration with the University of Kentucky, the number of reported infestations has grown dramatically over the last dozen years or so, with the majority of the problem being reported in individual homes, followed by apartment buildings and condominiums. So what are bed bugs and what do they do? According to the NPMA, “Although bed bugs are not known to transmit disease to humans, their bites do leave itchy welts on human skin and can cause an allergic reaction in some people.” Not only that, even when you’ve had your home treated, there’s a good chance they’re going to come back, especially if they make the leap from your bed to your other upholstered furniture. If you suspect that there are bed bugs in your mattress, you are strongly advised to dispose of it appropriately, get your home treated, and purchase a new one.
  • Sweat, body oil, body fluids – You don’t have to think too hard about this one, especially if you’ve had your bed for more than ten years. Every night that you woke up in a sweat, your body fluids did more than soak your sheets – they went straight down into your mattress, where they’ve stayed. The same is true of any other bodily fluids, as well as all the millions of dead skin cells that you have shed every night throughout the years. They are embedded deep within the surface of your mattress, which might be causing you to have rashes, break outs, or even to give your mattress a bit of a smell. This is one of the reasons why it is always recommended that you purchase a new mattress rather than a used one.
  • Dust mites – Everybody has dust mites, there’s no escaping them, but your bed is a breeding ground for them, especially with all of the dead skin cells that you’ve shed (see above). When you combine all of that stuff that they love to eat with the fact that when you lay down and pull up the covers every night, you’re making things nice and warm and cozy for them, there’s no wonder why an older bed is their favorite place to be. If that isn’t enough to gross you out, then think about this – experts say that “dust mites feed on the skin cells your body sheds at night and their droppings are a major source of discomfort for allergy sufferers.” And according to a report on CNN, “As if the presence of microscopic eight-legged vermin weren’t gross enough, consider that it’s not the mites that cause some people to cough and sneeze. It’s their excrement.”
  • Mattress materials – Few people give thought to the materials that their mattress is made of, but perhaps you should, especially if you have allergies or sensitivities to chemicals. According to the website MotherJones.com, “Since the mid-to-late ‘60s, more mattresses have been made of polyurethane foam, a petroleum-based material that emits volatile organic compounds that cause respiratory problems and skin irritation.” Though not every memory foam mattress is a problem, some are made with more care than others. As mattress manufacturers have become increasingly aware of the sensitivities and irritation they have limited the foam’s use to the interior of the mattress, keeping it away from the primary sleep surface to decrease the potential for irritation. If you have an older mattress, there is less likelihood that this care has been taken.
  • Chemicals and pesticides – Because mattresses are required to be flame retardant, many mattress manufacturers are utilizing a variety of materials that make them compliant, and some of these chemicals may be toxic or may create sensitivity in certain individuals. According to a report on Mercola.com, “This means that the manufacturers are dousing them with highly toxic flame-retardant chemicals, which do not have to be disclosed in any way. This is probably the most important piece of furniture you want to get right, as you are spending about one-third of your life on it.” The majority of mattresses that are being made with dangerous chemicals are coming from China, where American manufacturers are taking more care with the safety of their processes and materials

The Power of Napping

by AustinNatural @ Austin Natural Mattress

As most of us know, it’s very difficult to fit in the recommended 8 hours of sleep per night. However, there is a great substitute for this that a lot of us tend to overlook: napping! This little nugget of luxury is something that gets thrown by the wayside upon adulthood. It’s unfortunate since adequate sleep provides so many benefits and even contributes to longevity. Research by NASA shows that naps escalate performance. Their pilots who took 25 minute naps were twice as focused and more attentive than those who didn’t. NASA also found that taking naps enhanced reaction times...

How Colleges Are Encouraging Students To Get More Sleep

by admin @ Thomasville Latex Mattress Natural Flex Blog

If America is a sleep-deprived nation, then the canary in the coal mine is our college students, who notoriously party into the wee hours and then stagger into early morning classes, or else pull all-nighters to complete projects and essays or study for exams. Though some may consider this a time-honored tradition, others see it as a health hazard that puts students at risk for a bevy of conditions that have been associated with sleep deprivation, including obesity, depression, diabetes, sleep apnea, and cardiovascular problems. In an effort to curb the tendency and educate students about the benefits and importance of getting a good night’s sleep, many colleges are taking extraordinary measures to raise awareness.

At the University of California-Los Angeles, the administration recently sponsored “Sleep Week”, a series of sleep education events that included setting up a temporary nap room in the campus library, free yoga and mindful awareness sessions to teach relaxation tips, free drop-in meditation sessions, and fifteen minute Sleep Well Assessments” designed to show students that turning off electronic devices at night can help improve their sleep quality. Professors were also asked to participate in educational sessions that informed them of the various negative effects that lack of sleep might be having on their students so that they could address the issue more knowledgeably. According to Kendra Knudsen, a coordinator with the UCLA Mind Well initiative, “There’s a weird pride in certain students when they pull all-nighters. They need to re-prioritize, if they don’t have time for sleep, looking at their schedule and seeing what is really important.”

UCLA is not alone in their efforts. Their neighbor to the northwest, the University of Alaska-Anchorage, hosted a similar event to educate students as to how incremental changes to their sleep habits could yield sizeable results, and on the East Coast Georgetown University has dedicated its efforts to the topic for the past several years, hanging posters encouraging students to put themselves first when it comes to their physical and mental well-being. Included in those efforts are signs that specifically address the issue of sleep and sleep deprivation. According to Laura Marcucci, Social Norms Program Coordinator at Georgetown’s Student Health Services, “It’s about, ‘How can I thrive and do well in this environment and also take care of myself.’” Though the administration understands students’ desires to have a rewarding and full schedule, “If it’s at the expense of your physical and emotional health, that’s when it starts to be a problem.”

A study conducted last year by University of Alabama health science professor Adam Knowlden revealed that the student population is twice as likely to be sleep deprived as the general population. “One of the main differences,” he explains, “is that college students’ ability to get sufficient sleep is more within their control, whereas the general adult population is more likely to be dealing with medical sleep disorders.” His thoughts are echoed by University of Michigan neurology professor Shelley D. Hershner, who says, “A lot of students realize they are sleepy, but I don’t think they understand all of the ramifications. When we are sleep deprived, we don’t judge our own ability well.” But with poor sleep habits providing a strong predictor of academic problems according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, perhaps students should be paying closer attention.

Ikea Latex Mattress Reviews - Buyers Guide

The Sleep Judge

I have a friend who frequently suffered from sciatica and complained about it quite vocally – upon my asking, it turned out she was a side sleeper who used a regular open coil spring mattress for her bed. I advised her to switch to latex and it did take her a while (latex is expensive of course), but the back ache complaints went down to almost zero within a few weeks. This anecdote should make two things clear: one, latex foam provides excellent comfort and support, and two, it isn't affordable for mainstream consumers. However, there are manufacturers who attempt to break this trend, and IKEA, with its considerably affordable (if brief) latex lineup, is one of them. Here's a guide, substantiated with honest IKEA latex mattress reviews by yours truly, to help you decide if their offerings are worth your investment. The Myth of the Weight-Doubling Mattress

by admin @ Thomasville Latex Mattress Natural Flex Blog

Every once in a while you’ll come upon a statistic that makes you stop and shake your head in utter amazement, and that is exactly what happened to me the other day when I read (on a mattress store website) that mattresses double in weight every ten years. The site offered no more information than that, so I took it upon myself to do some research and found the reason behind the stat, as well as the truth behind it – which is that it is entirely untrue.

The story goes that the average mattress doubles in weight every ten years as a result of an accumulation of dust mites and their droppings, as well as oils, bodily fluids and skin shedding from the humans that spend one third of their lives sleeping on it. The myth is so commonly held that it even appeared as a Facebook post on the page published by actor and celebrity icon George Takei, who has a huge following on the social media site, as well as in an article that the Wall Street Journal published in February of 2000, which may actually have been where they story started. That article was titled “Weapons Against Dust Mites May Not Be Worth the Cost,” and part of its text read as follows:

Dust mites thrive in plush carpets, overstuffed upholstery and cushy bed comforters. One frightening statistic: The average mattress will double its weight in ten years as a result of being filled with dead dust mites and their detritus. Facts like these can send even the most skeptical consumer running for the dust mop. “You see a picture of these bugs, and it’s not pretty,” says Stephen Wasserman, past president of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. “But if you’re not allergic to them, I don’t think your environment will be dramatically different if you kill them.”

According to research done by Snopes.com, a website dedicated to investigating and either confirming or disproving urban myths such as this one, the facts just don’t hold up on this one, and in fact, upon investigating they tracked down the expert that had been quoted in the Wall Street Journal piece to see what he had to say about it. Turns out that Ohio State University researcher Emmett Glass’ comment was misconstrued and taken out of context. “I never quoted that statistic. I told [the reporter] that Internet websites have statistics that try to strike fear in the consumer, thus promoting their products. I gave her a few off the top of my head (two million mites in an average mattress, mattress doubling in weight, etc.) that I read over the years. She asked me if any of these statistics have any scientific merit and I told her that none of them are in the literature. To the layman, that is a NO! In fact I asked the Wall Street Journal writer to call an expert on mattresses at the International Sleep Products Association. She did and was told that the statistic on mattresses doubling in weight was far from the truth. The journalist chose to include it in the story anyway. She liked the statistic because it made her story more interesting.”

So, the bottom line is that the original source of the myth was exactly the type of thing that I found myself while looking at a mattress sales website – a statement printed to appear as though it is fact and designed to strike fear into the hearts of consumers and make them purchase a mattress after owning it for several years. The idea that a mattress would double from its normal weight over that period of time and be filled with dust mites and their excrement, as well as other human debris, has plenty of the ick factor that marketers were looking for, though it would seem as if an educated consumer would stop and realize that even if that were once true, the common use of mattress covers, sheets, and even pajamas would all have created plenty of barrier between the mattress and the human to make those numbers come down a great deal. What is even more surprising is that the marketers chose to take that approach rather than the one that is true – that after ten years, a mattress has been through more than enough wear and tear to warrant it being replaced.

Though consumers tend not to think about mattresses in terms of longevity, the truth is that there are very few that continue to provide adequate support and comfort beyond an eight-year period. The research has shown that based on actual user experiences and complaints, a futon mattress that gets daily use only lasts about four years, a traditional innerspring mattress generally lasts about six or seven years, and memory foam and latex mattresses for between seven and nine. The latex and memory foam styles generally last the longest because they have a higher density, though much of its longevity will have to do with its original quality, but after several years it will eventually lose some of its resiliency and can sag or develop body impressions. Rotating (not flipping) the mattress can help with this issue so that you can get the longest use out of your mattress. Innersprings will sag more quickly.

If you’re not sure whether your mattress has passed its prime, there are a few signs to look for. In addition to obvious signs of wear and tear, here are some cues:

  • If you sleep away from home and find that you had a better night’s sleep than you do in your own be
  • If you wake up feeling pain or stiffness in your back and joints
  • If your wake up feeling tired even though you slept well

The bottom line is that if your mattress is seven years or older then the time for a new investment is probably approaching quickly. But it’s not because of dust mites!

Back Pain Keeping You Up at Night? Here’s Help

by admin @ Thomasville Latex Mattress Natural Flex Blog

One of the number one issues that keep people from getting a good night’s sleep is the problem of chronic back pain, and this often debilitating condition is doing more than affecting our ability to sleep – according to a recent survey, it is also the cause of a good deal of absenteeism from work, and one of the top reasons that people go to see their doctor. By some estimates, roughly eighty percent of the American public will experience back pain at some point in their life, and that means that it is important to know the steps to take to protect yourself from the risk of injury, as well as what to do once you do start to feel pain.

According to Dr. David E. Fish of the UCLA Spine Center, “Back pain can interrupt every facet of your life, especially sleep which your body needs to maintain both spine and overall health and to adequately recover from back pain. Most people will experience some sort of back pain in their lifetime. Prevention is key, and by following a few basic tips you can avoid future back pain symptoms and ensure that you are giving your body the rejuvenating rest it needs.”

Here are some suggestions that will keep your back healthy and give you the ability to be pain free and sleeping soundly:

  • If you are going to be lifting something heavy, remember the old adage about lifting with your legs. The muscles in your legs are very strong, and if you use the right posture and form when lifting you’ll allow them to engage and take the brunt of what you are lifting. Keep your back perpendicular to the ground and your head up, bending your legs under you and getting your lift from your knees. Concentrating on keeping your body close to the object instead of having your arms extended will help too, and when in doubt, hire somebody who is trained in the proper way to lift – saving the money on movers is not worth the pain that could follow.
  • If you’re not currently exercising then start a routine, and try to choose something that will not only keep you at a healthy weight (or start you in that direction), but also something that will include some healthy stretching that will keep your back muscles limber.
  • Start doing some situps and other core body exercises. The stronger your abdominal muscles are, the stronger your back will be. You don’t need to do a million crunches to strengthen your abs. Think about signing up for a class that includes some yoga or Pilates moves.
  • Make sure that your back is well supported by your mattress. One way to check on this is to lay flat on your back on your mattress and try sticking your hand between the small of your back and your bed. If there is more than enough room, then it may be time to invest in a new mattress that provides you with better support.
  • Consider your sleeping position: as long as your mattress is supportive, sleeping on your back is the healthiest for your back. If you sleep on your side then you can alleviate back and hip pain by putting a pillow between your knees, and a small pillow under the small of your back can do wonders for those who sleep on their back. Stomach sleepers are doing their backs no favors, but if it is the only way that you can sleep then try to keep your pillow as flat as possible so that you aren’t giving yourself neck pain, and consider sliding a pillow under you hips to minimize the arch of your back.
  • Take your time when your alarm goes off in the morning and make sure that you are getting out of bed the right way. This entails rolling onto your side with your knees bent and then pushing yourself up into a sitting position with your legs swinging over the side of the bed and your feet hitting the floor, then pushing up to lift yourself out of bed. Reverse the procedure for getting into bed – sit down, support yourself with your hands and lie on your side.
  • Take a good look at your body and your weight and be honest with yourself. If you’ve carrying a few extra pounds then you are putting unnecessary stress on your spine and your joints, as well as causing yourself additional potential health problems. Start to eat more healthily and do some more exercise in order to lose the weight.
  • Moving around during the day is a great way to keep the blood flowing and avoid stiffness and pain. Doing so will make a big difference in the degree and extent of pain that you are likely to feel at night. It may be tempting to just sit still, but the more you move, the better you will feel.
  • Take calcium supplements to strengthen your bones, drink plenty of water to make sure that you are well hydrated, and make sure that you aren’t doing anything that makes your overall health suffer. If you are smoking then work hard to quit, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that cigarette smokers have a much greater chance of experiencing lower back pain than do nonsmokers.
  • Don’t carry a heavy purse, backpack, laptop or briefcase. You may not realize that it is contributing to your pain, or can be the cause of it.
  • Try to remember when you purchased your mattress, and if it has been more than five to eight years, then consider investing in a new one. The American public tends to put off their mattress shopping because it is a big investment and can be an uncomfortable experience, but a mattress that is older than eight years is unlikely to be giving you the support that you need.

Environmental Toxins May Contribute to Aging

by AustinNatural @ Austin Natural Mattress

Chronological age is determined by birth date. Biological age is established by physiological and molecular cells within the individual. The latter is influenced by the exposure of damaging substances in the environment, such as chemicals, cigarette smoke, or even stress (gerontogens). Aging occurs when the body goes through a biological mechanism called senescence. During this process, healthy cells become impaired and they lose their ability to divide. Over a period of time, these impaired cells begin to compile, using resources and releasing hormones with inflammatory characteristics. This majorly contributes to aging and age related diseases. Someday, scientists hope that blood...

Top Fifteen Tips To Help You Get to Sleep Fast

by admin @ Thomasville Latex Mattress Natural Flex Blog

There are so many things that can keep us from getting the seven to nine hours of sleep that we are each supposed to get every night. Work obligations, social and family obligations, the lure of reading just one more chapter or watching just one more episode of our favorite episodic television show. With all of these temptations and distractions, it’s no wonder that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said that sleep deprivation is a national public health epidemic, and that doesn’t even begin to touch on the problems that may be caused by stress, financial worry, or medical problems and sleep disorders.

If you believe that you have a physical or emotional problem that is interfering with your ability to get the sleep that you need, then you are urged to see your physician for medical help. But if not going to sleep at night is more a matter of your habits and the choices that you’re making, perhaps all you need is a bit of self control, commitment, and a few helpful hints on ways to make falling asleep quickly easier. Here are fifteen of the top tips for getting yourself off to dreamland faster.

  1. If you smoke, stop. In addition to everything else that you already know is unhealthy about smoking, cigarettes contain nicotine, a known stimulate that elevates your heart rate and sets your brain to alert.
  2. If you’re got your tablet, smart phone, or television up and operational in your bedroom, that’s causing you more trouble then you realize. Not only does the blue light that the devices emit switch your brain to thinking that it’s time to wake up, but the content you’re looking at is stimulating you too. Turn it off and you’ll find yourself falling asleep much more easily.
  3. Face the alarm clock towards the wall. This not only stops you from watching the clock and obsessing over how long it’s taking you to fall asleep, it also helps to minimize the brightness of the LED light that your clock emits.
  4. Create a set of nightly steps that lead up to your bedtime and repeat them every single night. It doesn’t need to be anything elaborate – it can be as simple as washing your face and brushing your teeth and doing a few deep breathing exercises. The idea is that your brain will quickly learn to associate the nightly activity with sleep, and that means that once it recognizes those cues it will begin making you feel drowsy as soon as the routine begins.
  5. Check the bedroom thermostat and make sure that you have the temperature set to between 60 and 68 degrees. Though the idea of being warm and toasty may be appealing, studies have shown that when our bodies go to sleep our core temperature drops, and by creating that environment we actually speed the process along. Not only that, it’s been shown that being too warm can actually work against you when it comes time to go to sleep.
  6. Establish a specific bedtime and wakeup time for each and every day, including the weekends, and stick to it. The more routine your schedule is, the more your body will respond and become engaged with the process you set, and that means that if you go to bed each and every night at ten o’clock, that will soon be the time that your body starts to feel sleepy.
  7. Make sure that your room is nice and dark. That may mean buying light blocking shades, tucking a towel underneath a door that adjoins a bright hallway, or maybe even wearing an eye mask to bed. The reason for this is that our bodies respond to darkness by producing the sleep hormone melatonin, but any sliver of daylight means that melatonin production is diminished, and your chances of falling asleep easily are too.
  8. Take a good look at your mattress to make sure that it is still in good shape and providing you with the support that you need. If it has been more than eight or ten years since you purchased it, then there’s a good chance that it’s time for a replacement. You will be amazed at how much better you sleep when your back and body are well supported.
  9. Keep a journal by your bed and right down whatever is bothering you before you go to sleep. This also works for to-do lists. If you jot down something that pops into your head when you’re trying to fall asleep, then you’ve basically told your brain that there is no need to worry about it any more because you’re going to take care of it tomorrow.
  10. Use the bed for sleep, sex, and nothing else. Don’t make the mistake of watching television, doing work, or even watching television in bed, because you want your brain to reach the conclusion that if you’re in bed, it’s time to go to sleep.
  11. Take off those pajamas. Some studies have shown that when you sleep wearing any kind of clothing, you not only get too warm but also can get distracted by the feeling of restriction that they provide.
  12. Having a banana before bedtime is a great way to increase your body’s levels of both melatonin and tryptophan, both of which help you fall asleep more easily.
  13. The old story that your grandmother told about having a glass of warm milk before bed is actually true. Milk contains tryptophan, and having it heated up makes it even more soothing.
  14. Because you know that your body likes to be cool to go to sleep, the idea that taking a warm bath or shower helps may sound counterintuitive, but when you heat up in the tub and then step out into the cooler air, your body temperature drops quickly, and it is actually that drop that makes you fall asleep more quickly.
  15. Cut out the caffeine after mid afternoon. No matter how much you think you need the pick-me up, it’s going to hurt you in the long run. Instead of drinking another cup of coffee, take a walk around the block and get some exercise and fresh air.

Can Video Games and Twitter Solve Insomnia Issues?

by admin @ Thomasville Latex Mattress Natural Flex Blog

That’s the question on the mind of sleep researchers at Lincoln University, who have noted the ways that people interact on various social networks and wonder whether a therapeutic technique could be created that would have the same impact. The scientists are hoping that by carefully investigating the ways that sites like Twitter and games like Candy Crush keep people engaged, they can provide improved access to cognitive behavioral therapy, the most effective form of therapy available for the treatment of insomnia.

Cognitive behavior therapy is already delivered via computer, as are many other types of therapies used to treat insomnia, depression and anxiety, but sleep experts believe that the fact that therapies delivered via the computer are generally delivered to patients that are isolated, they may not be as beneficial as those that have a more social aspect or are supported by family, friends, and a more regular interaction with a therapist. By finding a way to make the therapies delivery more similar to the same kind of repetitive and driven response generated by social media, they hope to make cognitive behavioral therapy more impactful.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a highly effective form of therapy in the treatment of insomnia, and is generally acknowledged as far more successful and long lasting than any other remedy available for those suffering from the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. The approach provides poor sleepers with lessons on how to avoid patterns of activity that strengthen their sleep problems and offer instead approaches that will encourage them to engage in more positive behaviors that will make sleep come more easily. Many of these lessons are currently available via computerized lessons that patients can access on personal computers, but the researchers realized that those types of lessons do not take advantage of the ways that people are utilizing computers today.

Where people once turned to computers as an innovative way for lessons that could be delivered conveniently and individually, the approach did not take advantage of the nearly addictive impact that characterizes the use of social media. According to Dr. Shaun Lawson, a reader computer science, there was a realization that more was needed. “The way that people interact with computers these days is not by sitting down in a room on their own looking at a screen. Today people use computers to connect with each other.”

Dr. Lawson is on a mission to figure out exactly what it is about the social networks that drive the level of engagement that they do, and then borrow the same strategy to strengthen the impact of computer-based cognitive behavioral therapy systems. “he way that people engage with social networks, how many times they do it in a day, it is very similar to the kind of ways that we would really want people to interact with CBT treatment.” The potential for replicating that level of engagement would shift the therapy from a single session once per week to multiple interactions over the course of a week, and also holds the potential of having people use the therapy for a more extended period of time and therefore get a greater level of benefit with longer lasting results.

Dr. Lawson has set out to accomplish his task by first delving into studying the pattern of activity that is common in social networks, and what drives it. “What’s interesting on social networks,” he says, “is that people are more likely to self-disclose on them.” Referring to the tendency to talk about things that are either upsetting them or making them happy, small victories and big disappointments, he says that these musings come up more online than they do in one-on-one conversations.   He also is planning to focus on exactly how that could relate to therapy being applied specifically to insomnia patients rather than those suffering from anxiety or depression because the causes tend to be more straightforward and respond better to CBT. “Insomnia is isolated as a condition.” He says that makes it easier to tell whether a patient is improving or not, and also makes it easier to gauge one therapeutic approach over another. As for the social media networks themselves, Lawson is particularly interested in the draw of social network games such as Farmville, and the enthusiasm that they generate. “The big question is why do so many people play it? That’s not well understood.”

Once the researchers are able to determine the reasons behind the unprecedented attraction of social media games, they plan to use what they find and incorporate it into already existing online cognitive behavioral therapy tools. Speaking of games like Farmville, Dr. Lawson says, “It uses mechanisms to hook into emotions to keep people coming back to it. It gives you little tasks to complete but you can only see the benefit of those tasks if you wait a couple of days. It’s that kind of thinking we’re interested in. Can we create a Farmville type of game that embeds some of the CBT principles in there?”

The research is being highly praised for its potential by others in the mental health community. According to Dr. Andrew McCulloch, head of the Mental Health Foundation, computer-based cognitive behavioral therapy could go a long way towards helping those who either have no access to a cognitive behavioral therapist or those who seem to need more positive feedback than the single weekly sessions are able to provide. “Although CBT is one of the most effective treatments for mental health problems such as depression and anxiety, some patients are still finding it difficult to access therapy,” he says. “The use of online and computerized courses in CBT are therefore becoming increasingly widely used, in order to provide therapy to people with mild to moderate needs.”
